About Me
I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Language
and Communications which completed at the University of
the Western Cape. I am still in the process of gaining work
experience in my subject of study; I worked as a digital
content developer at Livity Life Digital Magazine and
currently work as a Junior Copy Editor at Fetola.
I have a particular interest in the critical analysis of text
and literacy practices and chose this particular field
because I have a great passion for literature. I enjoy
learning about the way in which people communicate and
establish meaning, particularly how this is done in
different languages, and this sparked a curiosity to
become more acquainted with various accents and
dialects, and how they are socially constructed into their
various linguistic identities.
I have spent a great deal of time volunteering my time to
enrich my community. During holidays I volunteer at my
local Library, and I have also been part of the Read to
Rise NGO which focuses on empowering primary school
learners through literature, book ownership and literacy
campaigns.

MOTIVATIONAL LETTER TO STUDY HONOURS: CRITICAL MEDIA STUDIES 210741
To whom it may concern,
My name is Tatum-Lee and I am a part of the Alumni of the University of the Western Cape, where I
have completed my BA degree in 2015. I have made the necessary preparations to continue my
postgraduate degree in Critical Media studies and I have always envisioned completing a
postgraduate degree at the University of the Western Cape. It is with great determination that I am
writing this letter of motivation, for your consideration to be a part of this Honors programme on a
Part –time Basis.
In my final year at the University, I had 13 modules which I successfully completed and went on to
graduate on the 14th of April in 2016. I have had my poetry published in the first edition of the UWC
graduate journal of research and creative writing and have participated in various programmes in
and around the campus community, specifically the S.H.O.U.T UWC programme.
This year, I have had more than enough time to plan considerably for the next phase of my career,
including gaining the necessary experience in media. I believe these experiences will enhance my
pursuit of a postgraduate degree. I have just recently completed my digital content producer
traineeship at Live Magazine South Africa, where I have had the opportunity to combine my BA
degree with practical experience, through pitching and producing articles, from humorous listicles
to political stories, which have all been published. I have mentored and trained by prominent South
African Editors and columnists such as Joonji Mdyogolo, former editor of the Oprah Magazine South
Africa, as well as Sisanda Ntshinga, the current editor, and mentor of Live Magazine South Africa.
I have volunteered extensively at literary organisations, including ReadtoRise; an organization
founded by the social philosopher, author, and poet Athol Williams. I have been a Library assistant
at Rockland’s library for eight years, where I have been taught all about the Libraries information
systems and how to manage it effectively.
I hope my body of work demonstrates my passion for continuous learning. I have used the time
after completing my undergraduate degree, to better myself for when this opportunity presented
itself again. It is with this zeal and enthusiasm to continue to pursue my studies that I appeal to you
to consider my application to this course specifically.
Sincerely,
Tatum Lee Louw

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
I am writing this reference on behalf of Tatum who is applying for a library degree at your
university. I have known Tatum-Lee Louw from the time when she became a library member
as a child at Rocklands library.
She is an avid reader and she loved the library and books. She proved to be responsible,
conscientious and dedicated. She has experience and knowledge of library systems,
shelving, library administration, reference interviews and library materials.
As her manager I had the privilege to observe her excellent work ethic as well as her
dedication to her studies while she volunteered at the library. She showed immense working
efficiency, knowledge and skills in conducting research. She performed her duties to the best
of her ability and will always ask if she is not sure of something. She is passionate about
libraries, writing in particular and people.
I evaluate Tatum as intelligent, dependable, dedicated person, who is ready to achieve her
goals. I am positive, that she would be a tremendous asset to your program and I highly
recommend her to you without reservation. If you have any further questions with regard to
her background or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me.

SUBJECT: TESTIMONIAL LETTER FOR TATUM-LEE LOUW
To Whom it may concern,
I am happy to recommend Tatum-lee Louw for the Honours Course in Media Research and
Practice at UWC. I have had the pleasure of volunteering with Tatum-Lee at Tellthem Ministries
International, in the Admin team, where she was part of the Media and Publications section.
She is always eager to get tasks completed and is usually the first one to volunteer to do something.
I know her to be someone who always goes the extra mile and who can follow instructions. She has
always displayed her dedication to lifelong learning and is known in the organisation as the “book
worm.”
She is a reliable team player and her desire to learn makes her a great asset to the organisation.
Tatum-lee would be a great addition to the postgraduate programme and will definitely contribute
to the body of work in her chosen field of study. I believe she has a great future ahead of her
because she carries determination and an unquenchable hunger to learn.
