India is the world’s third‐ biggest energy
consumer country, driven by rising incomes
and improving standards of living.
Energy consumption has grown 3 folds since
1990 & , with over 80% of demand still being
met by coal, oil and solid biomass.
On a per capita basis, India’s energy use is
~ 1/3rd world average.
India is set to drive global energy demand
propelled by Indian households moving to
cities and urban centres.
What do these facts indicate?
6. 6
Indian Institute Of Management Lucknow April 2023
It indicates that India is one of the world's
fastest-growing energy consumers, and
therefore it is inevitable for India to increase
its energy producing capability for a
sustainable growth.
Indian energy industry has undergone
significant transformations over the years.
7. Overview of Energy Industries in India
Oil and Gas Exploration and Production
The exploration activities are primarily carried out by both public and private sector
companies, including Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Oil India Limited (OIL), and
private players like Reliance Industries Limited and Vedanta Limited. These companies
explore and extract oil and gas reserves from onshore and offshore fields.
Refining and Marketing
The refining sector comprises entities like Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bharat
Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited
(HPCL), Reliance Industries Limited. These refineries produce a wide range of products,
including gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel (ATF), and
petrochemicals. The marketing of petroleum products is done through an extensive
network of retail outlets across the country.
8. Energy Industries in India
Natural gas and LNG
The natural gas sector involves exploration, production, liquefaction, regasification,
transportation, and distribution of natural gas. Companies like GAIL (India) Limited, Oil
and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), and Oil India Limited (OIL) are actively involved in
natural gas production and transmission. Additionally, India has been increasing its
imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to meet the rising demand
Coal, lignite and other fossil Fuels
Coal is the most important and abundant fossil fuel in India. It accounts for 55% of the
country's energy need. Coal will continue to occupy centre-stage of India 's energy
scenario. Coal India a Maharatna PSU, contributes around 82% of the total Coal
production in India.
9. Energy Industries in India
Renewable energy
India has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix.
Solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectric power are the key sources of renewable energy
in India. Numerous companies like Adani Green Energy, NTPC, Tata Power, JSW Energy,
ReNew, BHEL, Reliance, Indian oil, Suzlon, L&T, Inox Wind, orient Power etc. are
engaged in meeting the Renewable Energy targets of India.
Nuclear energy
As per the latest assessment by Dept. of Atomic Energy (DAE), 8700 MW capacity is
under construction and 7000 MW capacity addition has been accorded in principle
approval. Presently Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and other PSU
like NTPC and IOCL only are engaged in Nuclear Energy projects.

Renewable Energy
Companies are
present in India?
11. Trends and Challenges
Renewable Energy Expansion: India continues to focus on the expansion of renewable
energy sources, particularly solar and wind power. The government has set a target to
achieve 450 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Energy Storage Solutions: The need for energy storage solutions has become crucial.
India is witnessing a rise in the deployment of energy storage technologies such as
lithium-ion batteries, pumped hydro storage, and thermal energy storage.
Electric Mobility: The Indian government is actively promoting electric mobility to
reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based transportation and mitigate air pollution.
Initiatives like the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
(FAME) scheme provide incentives for the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
12. Trends and Challenges
Energy Efficiency Measures: Energy efficiency has become a key focus area to
optimize energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste to Energy Projects: It aims to convert municipal solid waste (MSW) and other
forms of waste into usable forms of energy, such as electricity or heat. These projects
contribute to waste management, renewable energy generation, and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
Green Hydrogen: Green hydrogen has gained significant attention and momentum in
India as part of the country's efforts to transition to a sustainable and low-carbon
energy system.
13. First-mile delivery, or first-mile lisics, is the transfer of goods from a manufacturer to a warehouse or distribution centre. The origin of these products
can be from anywhere in the world and from any provider. Simply, once a good is manufactured, wherever it goes next is known as the first mile.
This step of the logistics process is crucial as the goods are coming directly from the manufacturer. Whether it’s a brick factory down the street,
designer clothes from Europe or candles from your own home, these products are all in the manufacturing phase.
Once the goods are created, they journey to a warehouse or distribution centre. This journey is defined as the first mile and can be a short or long
distance, depending on the final destination of the product. The warehouse or distribution centre coordinates the rollout of the products. Generally,
this results in selling the items to end consumers.
