World Bank's Data for Better Lives Final Project. This presentation is about how data can be used to mitigate the incessant collapse of building in Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa.
1. THE USE OF DATA TO PREVENT INCESSANT
BUILDING COLLAPSE IN LAGOS, NIGERIA.
2. INTRODUCTION
The built environment which is expected to be one of the
most functional aspect of every developing economy; this
is as a result of the importance of shelter to human
livelihood.
Businesses and other important services are conducted in
buildings.
The employment opportunities there are also unlimited;
both skilled and unskilled.
3. INTRODUCTION CONT’D

state; the economic hub of Nigeria in the recent years.
The last sad occurrence happened at a 21 – storey building site
at an highbrow environment of Ikoyi, Lagos in November
2021; this was said to have claimed lives going to nearly 50
and about a dozen badly injured.
This project work seeks to address this menace from the point
of a Civil Engineer using adequate public and private data.

9. DATA RELATED TO BUILDING
COLLAPSE
Professional Bodies and Member’s Details
Government Approved Professional Fees of Engagements
Details of Approved Projects
Details of Professionals Engaged on Projects
Insurance Details of Projects
Survey Data of Building Projects
GPS Coordinates of Salient Vertical and Horizontal Members
10. PROFESSIONAL BODIES AND MEMBERS’
DETAILS
In Nigerian, Associations like Nigerian Society of Engineers, Nigerian
Institute of Architect, Nigerian Institute of Builders among others are the
bodies that regulates professionals in their fields in the building industry.
Availability of Members’ directory and positive usage of such will eliminate
the proliferation of Quacks in the industry.
Government should also mandate the bodies on regulatory policies while
working together to totally eliminate the society of the continuous sad
occurrences.
11. DETAILS OF APPROVED PROJECTS
Government agencies, town planning authorities that serve as regulators of
project can work with citizen by making available details of approved
project in terms of intended use, number of floors among others.
It has been reported severally that some building collapses were as a result
of increment in the number of floors from what was designed and approved.
Whistle blower policies can be introduced where neighbouring community
dwellers can report to the Government as swift as possible when there are
infractions against the data of the approval.
12. SURVEY DATA GPS COORDINATES OF SALIENT
VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL MEMBERS
Tilting of the 21- Storey Building at Ikoyi, Lagos Prior to Collapse
The picture depicts the
orientation the 21
storey collapsed
building in Lagos lately
was prior to collapse.
Survey and GPS data
would have given the
continuous deflection
of the building as it
aged and the sad
incident would have
been averted, at least
by saving the lives of 50
individuals.
13. INSURANCE DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION
PROJECTS
It is a known fact that Insurance culture is not well accepted in developing
Nations, however, there are magnitude of projects where this should be a
requirement.
A case of Ikoyi building collapse was reported to have investors having
funds ranging between $500,000 and $1.5M on the project. But
unfortunately, a speculation is flying around that the project wasn’t insured.
Availability of Data accessible by private individuals in the public domain
would have been helpful as no one will commit such humongous amount of
money to a non-insured business deal.
14. CONCLUSION
Data has proven to be a tool if used judiciously to address
building collapse, thereby saving lives.
World Development Report 2021 was really an eye opener
and truly has proven Data is required for better lives as
theme of the course connotes.
