● The major purpose of the G-7 is to discuss and sometimes act in concert
to help resolve global issues, major world crisis.
● Technically the G-7, cannot pass any laws as each nation have their own
democratic processes, but still some of its decisions have had global
effects.
● The G-7 has also launched initiatives to fund issues and relieve crises
where it sees an opportunity for joint action. A point in case, they
coordinated with the WHO to progress the world from the COVID-19 virus
outbreak.
● There are some astounding statistics about G-7 countries:
>> They account for 40% of world GDP
>> They constitute about 1/10 of world population

11. HISTORY OF G-7
● The origin of the G-7 group dated back to the early 70’s, where
leaders of US, UK, France, Germany and Japan had an informal
and casual meeting in Paris
● It was to discuss the major concerns of those times, which were
recession and oil crisis.
● Then the leaders made it a convention to meet together to
discuss any major problems.
● Further, countries kept on joining each year. And a certain
country began to host it each time.

14. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The United States participated in the first World Economic
Summit in 1975, which later developed into the G7.
The honorable president of US, Mr. Joe Biden is the current
leader who represents US in the G-7 summit.
America earned its place in G-7, due to influence in many forms
of such as economic, political, military and cultural influence
across the planet
In such a way, US owns a dominant position over most other
countries.
14
16. THE UNITED KINGDOM
The UK has belonged to the group of leading economic nations since
1975.
The country has hosted numerous summits, most recently in 2021.
The Prime Minister, Mr. Rishi Sunak represents the nation at the G-7
committee.
Although, not being a supergiant in economy in the recent times, UK has
managed to hold its spot in the G-7, This is due to the heavy cultural
aspects that they bring to the table.
Britain's global power originated from the Industrial revolution during
the colonial times.

18. THE EUROPEAN UNION
The EU has been a member of the G7 since 1981 and has participated at a high
level in G7 meetings ever since.
The President of the European Council is Charles Michel represents the entire
European union.
This includes 28 countries like Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of
Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands,
Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden
Though, it is not a superpower in the any particular sector, It is the largest
political union in the world and covers almost every part of Europe.
A fact to note is that, they have not been given presidency rights still.

JAPAN and CANADA
Japan has belonged to the group of leading economic nations ever
since the first summit in 1975. The Prime Minister is Fumio Kishida.
Canada was admitted to the group at the 1976 summit in Puerto Rico –
the G7 was born. The Prime Minister of Canada is Justin Trudeau.
Though these aren’t countries that dominate a sector, they have their
own perks like Japan is probably one of the most advanced part of the
world.
22. 22
FRANCE and GERMANY
France was one of the earliest members of G-7, this time around it is
represented by The French President, Emmanuel Macron.
Germany held the G-7 Presidency on 2022. Germany was represented by
their Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz
In the earlier times, only the western part of Germany was included in
this committee, but as time went by they integrated entire Germany in
this.
23. ISSUES AMONG G-7
We could notice that some huge names like Russia, China, India are missing.
SUSPENSION OF RUSSIA : In 2014, Russia was suspended from the group after the
annexation of Crimea and tensions in Ukraine. As of 2021, Russia has not been
invited back to the G-7.
STRANGE CASE OF CHINA : Due to the enormous population of china, their financial
statistics per person doesn’t qualify them as a financially advanced country.
There is a new notion about the G-7 that, they are not relevant in these times as
there are many nations with smaller population, but still aces in each sector like
defence, administration, manufacturing, production and many more.
There is another similar union in the rise called G-20 which has almost all the
superpower and potential power nations including Russia, China, India

24. RECENT SUMMITS

the Corona Virus Outbreak during that time and the Climate crisis.
England hosted this summit.
The next summit is going to be taken precedence by Japan this year.
24
25. SHOULD INDIA BE CONSIDERED ?
We leave this to the audience to ponder on.
Given the influence and impact of the Indian
Subcontinent, is it worthy to get a place in the G-7
Nations ???
If not why ?
