2. The percentage of
homeless people on
Oahu is steadily
decreasing, but is the
problem being handled
the right way?
3. Instead of addressing
the cause, police issue
citations to get them
out of the way, and
send the rest of the
homeless population
off on planes to the
mainland; creating
criminals and only
shoving the problem
elsewhere.
4. The city of
honolulu has begun
creating affordable
housing projects
that will decrease
those who are
effected by the
high housing and
rental options
5. In 2014 they created 26
studios, 72 one
bedrooms, 83 two-
bedroom units and 23
three-bedroom units
and continue to look or
more affordable
housing development
sites.
6. In 2011 they developed
a program called
“Reserved housing”
which was designed to
provide affordable
housing in the
Kaka’ako area for
buyers earning less
than 140 percent of
Honolulu area median
income
7. I think that creating governemnt camping sites and
providing tents could be a good way to keep from
criminalizing the homeless
8. A guard or police officer would be posted at these sites at all times,
those who received tents would be able to lock them and know their
things are safe, each person would be given a buss pass to travel
back and forth from the site, and the law would be enforced
9. I feel this will reduce drug abuse
among the homeless, and it would
provide a middle ground and better
segway for those who plan to move
off the island
