2. 1. Introduction
The company undertaken for the study is Bombay Transportation Electrical Components
Private Limited (BTECPL). It is an old manufacturing company which manufactures various
components. Since manufacturing plays important sector in Indian business, it also plays
role in contribution of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is vital for economic progress.
Engineering goods and transport equipment are fastest growing areas. There is constant
change in customer’s attitude towards purchasing of goods. Customer’s demands have
made the manufacturing industries to work with excellence. The competitiveness has
increased many folds. This has also increased the scope for trying new techniques for
improving process in the manufacturing industries. This has made MNC’s to invest in Indian
manufacturing industries since they consider our country as low cost manufacturing base
with abundance labour availability. The Indian government also favours FDI which can
contribute towards generation of employment, raise productivity, share skills and
techniques. This will boost sales and help in economic performance of our country. Thus
Government of India has realised the significance of the manufacturing industry to the
country’s industrial development and is taking necessary steps to increase investment in
this sector.
India has an advantage to attract investments with proper use of Manufacturing tools
and growing technology. Therefore keeping in mind demand and supply of goods,
productivity improvement is the need of the hour with suitable manufacturing tools and
techniques.
3. 2. Importance and Significance of the Study
The increasing demands of manufacturing units will lead to possible development of
volume in manufacturing. So, Lean manufacturing tools are necessary to improve process of
manufacturing components. This will lead to improved efficiency in reaching of goods from
one place to another.
The study and implementation of lean manufacturing in BTECPL will help us to
understand the value of time and eliminates waste in processes. This will help to improve
quality. Improvement in quality means fewer defects. The usage of multiple machines is
reduced, so there will be fewer breakdowns in processes. This will lead to higher efficiency,
where morale and output of man per hour improves due to their enhanced involvement in
the processes. Application of lean manufacturing will also help to reduce inventory levels
which will help to save space. The turnover of stock will increase which will improve the
delivery performance of the company. Thus, with better customer satisfaction, relations
with customers will improve which will benefit in higher profits and increased business. This
increase in business relations will also help in attracting new customers in business.
3. Objectives of the Study
The topic of study is selected keeping in mind the scenario of increasing competitiveness
in manufacturing companies. Achieving faster outputs with enhanced inputs is the key to
attain goal of sustaining the place in industry. This indeed will help in quality improvement
with lower costs.
4. The main objectives of the study are as follows:
A). To reduce material& employee movement by 20%.
B). To increase productivity of component by 10%.
C). To lower inventory level/work in process of component.
4. Hypotheses
A). Availability of gauges, tools and fixtures for manufacturing of component will help in
growth of productivity.
B). The application of Kaizen, JIT will help to lower inventory level and material
movement/work in process by 10% respectively.
5. Research Methodology
A). Sample- The quantity of samples required for this study is 4000 nos. of components.
B). Sources of data collection:-
a). Primary source of data- Motion Study, Time Study, Taqt time calculation, Cycle
time calculation.
b). Secondary source of data- Quality tools
C). Method of processing the data collected- The data collected will be processed and
used to compare with the previous available data.
5. 6. Expected Contribution
This study project will be beneficial in understanding flow of components. It will help
BTECPL management to recognise the non-value added activities. Non-value added
activities are just burden to any organisation and attacking the same will help in lean way of
thinking within organisation. The quality of human resource will increase by fuelling their
morale with the benefits. The capacity and capability of the organisation will increase which
will have direct effect on sales. Customer satisfaction and their involvement will increase
when they come to know the measures the organisation is taking to improve progress. This
study will help in optimum use of resources with reduced costs. It will also help to improve
development activities which will help in expanding customer base to develop more
businesses. This will trigger the accountability and profitability of the organisation.
