Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer. Some of his key accomplishments included discovering the four largest moons of Jupiter in 1609-1610 using an improved telescope he developed. He also showed the importance of the telescope as a tool for astronomers by proving there were objects in space. Galileo published works supporting Copernicus' theory that the Earth and planets revolve around the sun, which brought him into conflict with the Catholic Church. He invented several devices including an early thermometer and a military compass that was later adapted for civilian use.

In 1612 Galileo published a Discourse
