English Idioms
An elephant in the room means….
An elephant in the room
If you say there is an elephant in the room, you mean that there is
an obvious problem or difficult situation that people do
not want to talk about.
Increasing poverty in the world is the western politicians’ elephant in the
room.
The fact that his 35-year-old brother was still living with his parents was a big
elephant in the room at every family gathering.
What is the meaning of the idiom ‘see eye
to eye’?
see eye to eye
If two people see eye to eye, they agree with each other
I'm not going to argue the point with you. We just don't see
eye to eye.
His mother and I don't see eye to eye about his decision to d
rop out of college.
This allusion to seeing things in the same way first occurred in the Bible
, when the prophet Isaiah predicts that, when the Lord is recognized as
the one true God, “Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice
together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye” (Isaiah 52:8).
“I don’t think Tom will ever order pasta instead of a
pizza. A leopard can’t change its spots you know.”
a leopard can‘t change its spots
One will stay true to one's nature, even if one pretends or claims
otherwise.
“Brendan: ‘Do you think he’ll ever stop lying to us?’ William: ‘I
doubt it; after all, a leopard never changes its spots.’ ”
This idiom dates as far back as the Old Testament. It was used in
Jeremiah 13:23, where the Hebrew prophet Jeremiah had originally
said: “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard its spots?”. "A
leopard never changes its spots" derives directly from that phrase and
is still used today.
I was already fed up with my husband's lazy, selfish ways,
but it was his refusal to get off the couch and come with
me to my mother's funeral that was the straw that broke
the camel's back!
the straw that broke the camel's back
A seemingly small or inconsequential issue, problem, or burden
that proved to be the final catalyst in causing an overworked or
overburdened person, system, organization, etc., to fail, give
up, or collapse.
With governmental resources already strained to the breaking point,
any sort of environmental disaster would likely be the straw that
broke the camel's back.
This comes from an Arab proverb about loading up a camel beyond its
capacity to move, to the scenario of a single straw
of grass or hay overwhelming the desert-roaming beast of burden.
