Editor's Notes
Welcome to “Surfing the Wave of Technology.” My name is Susan Shepherd, and I am a 2nd Grade Teacher at Ginter Park Elementary School in Richmond City. I have taught at my school for 18 years, and a total of 20 years. I am a Graduate student in the School Librarian program at ODU. Today we will be talking about technological tools that will help make your life easier, and make learning more fun for the students.
Today I will be talking about Smore, an online newsletter and flyer maker. Picktochart, which is an infographic maker tool.
Emaze, an online presentation tool, and Big Huge Labs. Big Huge Labs has the capability to make magazine covers, movie posters, trading cards, and so much more. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the presentation. I will e-mail the presentation to you, so you do not have to worry about taking too many notes.
We all know that we are overwhelmed with work, so we must learn how to work smarter, not harder. Hopefully, these tools we are talking about today, will help you work smarter.
The first tool we are discussing is Smore.com. As you can see, Smore offers a variety of capabilities from news bulletins, to event flyers. (Click picture to go to website.) All of these tools are easy to use. You just drop, and drag your content in. You can manipulate the blocks of content to fit your needs. The more you work with Smore, the easier it becomes to use.
Idea #1 – Create an event flyer. This is a sample Back To School Night flyer I created for my school. (Click the picture). You can see that Smore is very easy to use, and is very colorful.
Idea #2 – Create a New Bulletin to let parents know what is going on at school or in your particular classroom. My school celebrated its 100th Anniversary of educating children this past school year. I took some of the photos, and plugged them into the template to create this flyer. (Click the flyer). As you can see it is very easy to manipulate, to add, or delete the content.
Idea #3 – Have students write a book report using Smore, or Have them complete a reading log. (Click the picture). This flyer was a requirement for my Children’s Literature class. The assignment was to create a Mother Goose flyer. There is a place for four details about one book, or you could have students write a short summary for four different books.
So, let’s stop for a moment, and let all that information sink in. Now, I would like for you to find a partner and have a quick talk. How would you use Smore in your classroom? (Allow participants two minutes to talk. Bring everyone back together and have them tell suggestions for how they would use Smore in the classroom.) There are a few drawbacks to Smore. One is, it is hard to find color printing within some schools. So, this may be a drawback. Also, I am using a free version of Smore. However, there is a special price for educators at $59 a year. Bulk pricing is available for more than one access license. You access more content, privacy for flyers created by kids, and you can e-mail the flyers to parents, and you will know if they open that e-mail.
Infographics was a new term to me when I began Graduate School. (Click the picture). An infographic is a visual way to convey information. An infographic is a tool used to educate and inform, contains graphs, charts, and data, to tell a story. The idea is to use as few words as possible. 90% of information is conveyed to the brain visually. So, infographics are the wave of the future. 40% of people respond to graphics, rather than text. Think about it. If someone says the word cat to you, in your mind you see a fluffy, pointy eared, creature with whiskers. You don’t see a paragraph written on a piece of paper describing a cat. So, it only makes sense that we should use tools that work with the facts we know.
Here is another infographic (click on the graphic) that is fun. The Life Advice from 50 beloved characters in Kid’s entertainment. We have Dory from Finding Dory “Just keep swimming.” Stitch from Lilo and Stitch “Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” And, my all time favorite….Cookie Monster. “Friend something better than chocolate ice cream…..maybe friend somebody you give up last cookie for.” Ok, onward to the SOL content part…..
This is an infographic that I created to go with the new Social Studies SOLs. This SOL is new to 2nd Grade. I had to create an infographic for my graduate class, so I chose to do patriotic symbols. (click the picture). This is a template that I just plugged my SOL content into. The Washington Monument, Bald Eagle, American Flag, and Statue of Liberty are all symbols that students must recognize. So, I created an anchor chart to hang in my classroom. I love the way it turned out. The bold, patriotic color theme, and the vibrant pictures that I chose to represent my content. It’s very eye catching, and I am very proud of my work. There is also a presentation setting in piktochart, that allows you to present the information like a power point presentation.
This is the template I started with when I began my Patriotic symbols infographic. (click picture). As you can see the blocks are easy to manipulate and change. Any part you do not need, and/or like, can be removed. I don’t know about you, have been led to believe that the answer to everything is found in an anchor chart.
You can also use Piktochart to create time lines, or sequence of events. This is an example of a flow chart that can easily be manipulated to show events on a timeline. (click the picture).
The new Social Studies SOLs all have a .1 aspect that is similar to Science 2.1, or 3.1. These .1 skills require that we use primary artifacts and secondary sources, create graphs, diagrams, and pictures to support understanding. These skills must be embedded into the rest of the Social Studies curriculum, similar to Science. This would be a great way to execute these new standards. A few drawback for using this application are, it is very time consuming, especially if you are a perfectionist. Just like your classroom, it will consume as much time as you will give it. You can use Picktochart for free, however there is a monthly fee to access more content, and more capability.
Take a moment to think about how you will utilize this tool in your classroom. Talk with people around you and generate ideas for using Picktochart.
The next tool we will talk about is Emaze.com. It is an presentation tool that is like Power Point with much more visual appeal. This is a video to introduce you to Emaze. Let’s watch it. (click image to start video)
You can use Emaze to create a slide show to introduce content vocabulary. You can use this to “unpack your standard” at the beginning of the unit. (Click picture to watch slide show.)
Idea #2 – Create a Class Rules Presentation. I discovered that Emaze has animated clipart. They wiggle, move, and loop movies clips. This should keep the kids attention. (Click picture to go to presenation). Instead of repeating the rules over, and over, you can just pull up your Emaze, and review it with the kids.
This is the template page. (Click the picture to open to this page). You can search for the type of template you want. Particularly I wanted to show you the Education templates. They are very colorful, and attention grabbing. There are many different templates within each stack. As you can see, these are very user friendly, and it is easy to customize them for your personal use.
Emaze has a very fun, and exciting choice. You can upload your boring Powerpoint presentation, and it will Emazify it for you. (Click image to go to full page).
I love this image of a gear tree. The gears are turning. We are full of ideas of how to work smarter, not harder. Take time for this information to soak in. Talk with your colleagues around you about how you will use this in your classroom.
Big Huge Labs is a multipurpose tool that does many fun things. (Click the image to go to this webpage). As you can see there are ideas for many different uses for Big Huge Labs. Magazine covers, movie posters, trading cards, jigsaw puzzles are just a few.
Idea #1 – Create a Magazine cover. There are so many ways you can go with this. This is another assignment that I created for my Children’t Literature class. I had to create a magazine cover that would tell about me. I love Skippyjon’s spirit, and took this picture on my way to vacation. I bought Skippyjon for my niece, nephew, and of course one for me. So, I put Skippyjon in the passenger seat, and took this picture. These are some of the children’s books that I enjoy reading. You can insert any photograph, and create a cover. You could have students pick a famous person, and write details about that famous person. You could put a book cover on the front, and have students write details about the book. You could put an author’s picture on the front, and list other books by that author. The possibilities are endless.
In much the same way you can make a magazine cover, you can also create a movie poster. Have students choose their favorite book, and make a movie poster out of it. At the top, you are also choosing actors to play the parts. One of the drawbacks is you cannot change the font style, or size as it appears on the front of the book.
Lastly, you can create trading cards, which can be used as study tools. For Social Studies, the children must recognize the pictures of famous people. So, creating a card with the picture of the person, and the relevant information that the students need is a powerful tool. You could also put in pictures of vocabulary words from reading, math, science, or other social studies ideas.
Take a moment to think about ideas for Big Huge Labs. Talk with the people around you about ideas.
So, finally we have reached the end of the presentation. Take a deep breath, and relax. This is a lot of information to soak in. A tip or trick that I try to use when attending Professional Development is to walk away with one idea that I will use in my classroom. If you try to think too big, you will be overwhelmed. Let this information marinate in your brain, and see what pops up and has you thinking after you walk away.
You have learned so trick to help you surf the wave of technology. Tips and tricks that will help you work smarter, not harder. If you e-mail me at my ODU address, I will forward this Powerpoint presentation to you. Do you have any questions? Thank you so much for taking time to come to my presentation. Enjoy the rest of the conference.
