Respondent: 0:24
Year Seven.
Moderator: 0:25
Great. And What lesson are you coming out of now to be here?
Respondent: 0:27
RE
Moderator: 0:28
Is that a good thing to quiet like RE?
Respondent: 0:40
Yeah, quite like it
Moderator: 0: 42
Yeah. And generally, at school, what would you say? are your favourite lessons?
Respondent: 0:52
Probably IT and food nutrition
Moderator: 0:56
And what is it about those subjects that you really like?
Respondent: 1:00
Using computers and making food
Moderator: 1:03
Yeah. Is there anything else or Is The teachers Nice? Or is it really just the subject
that you love?
Respondent: 1:12
Teachers are nice
Moderator: 1:13
Great. And what about subjects You don't like so much? Are there any kind of
subjects at school that you think it's not my favourite?
Respondent: 1:21
English and maths
Moderator: 1:24
Yeah. And what is about those ones that you don't like so much?
Respondent: 1:45
I don’t really like because they are pretty boring
Moderator: 1:46
yeah. And what about teachers in those classes? Are they okay? They're reallyjust
the subject that you don't like.
Respondent: 1:57
Just the subjects
Moderator: 1: 58
Do you find English and maths trickier than some of your other subjects? And is there
anything that school does to kind of help you out with that? Is there any kind of
support school puts in place that you find really useful?
Respondent: 2:17
Yes, with my hub pass.
Moderator: 2:20
That's really cool. Tell me more about the hub pass? What's that?
Respondent: 2:27
Feeling angry or anxious, during lessons She said you can have hub pass and yeah, I can
do my walk in here.
Moderator: 2:38
And you find that really useful? And did you just get given the hub pass? Did you ask
for the hub pass?
Respondent: 2:46
I have been given it
Moderator: 2:47
And then they explained what it was for? And do you think it's quite easy to use that if
you ever had any problems using the hub pass? So, works pretty well?
Respondent: 3:00
Yeah.
Moderator: 3:04
Fantastic. And so, the hub Is this space?
Respondent: 3:10
Yeah.
Moderator: 3:13
So quiet, calm space. Fantastic. Is there anything else that helps you with learning
that the school does anything else? Like the using a laptop, BM, take any movement
breaks? And only those things?
Respondent: 3:27
I’ll pass the time
Moderator: 3:28
Fantastic. Tell me about time I'll pass
Respondent: 3:31
I’ll just pass it, take a few minutes outside.
Moderator: 3:41
And you can use that. Again, whenever you like, whenever you feel you need it. That's
fantastic. And do you work with anyone on sort of strategies you can use in that
timeout? So, things you can do so you recognize need a timeout? And then when
you're having timeout? You work with anyone and things you can do that time to kind
of help you.
Respondent: 4:13
Not really.
Moderator: 4:14
Do you have some of your own strategies things you do?
Respondent: 4:15
Just a break.
Moderator: 4:16
Fantastic. In general, how do you find asking for help when you need it?
Respondent: 4:42
A bit tricky.
Moderator: 4:43
A bit tricky. Yeah, and why do you think that it's because people won't listen to you?
Or do you think it's because maybe people won't know how to help?
Respondent: 5:03
Yeah, they help
Moderator: 5:40
Okay, they might not be able to know how to help. Do you think generally your
teachers understand us understand your strengths, but also things that you find
tricky?
Respondent: Yeah.
Moderator: 5:44
What do you think the school could do to help move that from a little bit to a lot?
Moderator: 6:02
Do you ever get a chance to tell teachers about? These are the ways I learn really
well? And these are things that don't help me when I'm learning. You do, That's good.
When does that tend to happen? When you get those chances?
Respondent: 6:22
I can’t really remember
Moderator: 6:24
Okay, so what do you tend to do at lunchtime break times here?
Respondent: 6:34
12:40
Moderator: 6:35
That's great. Do you have any clubs at lunchtime break times at the school? Do you
have any clubs Anytime at school?
Respondent: 6:44
After school
Moderator: 6:45
Okay, and what sort of clubs have you got? or the school have
Respondent: 6:50
Well, it has cooking floor, English, Reading, homework’s. You get to catch up on if you need
to or play Football, basketball.
Moderator: 7:04
So quite a few. Do you do any of them?
Respondent: 7:08
Yeah, I'll do football. I used to do that. And I do the homework sometimes.
Moderator: 7:15
Do you find that helpful? The homework clubs.
Respondent: 7:16
Yeah.
Moderator: 7:20
And in that homework club is someone to help you help you out? Like, is there a
teacher there? To give support. You're finding something tricky.
Respondent: 7:23
Yeah,
Moderator: 7:30
Okay, great. Is there anything else then to the homework club? Sounds like it helps
with homework. Is there anything else that helps you with lessons or helps you with
learning?
Respondent: 7:47
Yeah, I would sit next to someone who wouldn’t distract me
Moderator: 7:50
Yeah. Do you think then they might help if you got to choose where to sit?
Respondent: 8:01
Maybe
Moderator: 8: 15
And what about any support? Like if you were in charge, that you were put in? you
mentioned maybe going to sit next to someone who wouldn't distract you? What else
would you say? If you're kind of making a lesson? Or you would say right, I would
give the students this? I would let the students have that.
Respondent: 8:31
Right. So good luck or lesson. Let them do like a book. [8:33 INAUDIBLE ACCENT]
Moderator: 8:38
Yeah. So, give them a kind of choice of almost like a reward that they can have at the
end of the lesson.
Moderator: 8:50
Do you ever have meetings with school and parents you talk about how things are
going at school?
Respondent: 8:58
No.
Moderator: 8:59
Do you feel generallyyou get a chance to give your opinion on what you're learning
how you're learning?
Respondent: 9:12
Yeah.
Moderator: 9:13
Is that in individual lessons? Or is that in a special time with someone?
Respondent: 9:24
I have a meeting with a lady in one of the rooms up there. I don't know what her name is, but
I speak to her few weeks often
Moderator: 9:31
Okay. Fantastic. And what kind of things do you get to talk about if you have to tell me
Respondent: 9:38
like which lessons are like which ones? And how I'll cope with the lessons. Yeah, pretty
much that
Moderator: 9:46
And do you find that helpful? And do you think you'll listen to that's great, but You
can't remember her name and when you were having these conversations, was that
something you asked for or something school put in place for you?
Respondent: 10:10
It was something school put in place for me
Moderator: 10:11
And what did they tell you, what It was for? Don't worry if you can't remember.
Respondent: 10:28
I think you're still not getting any more like how I do in school.
Moderator: 10:33
Okay. You were happy to go along to these Fantastic. Do you think that helps your
teachers then to better understand you?
Respondent: 10:44
Yeah
Moderator: 10:45
So, you think this is a good thing for a school to do?
Respondent: 10:50
Yeah.
Moderator: 10: 51
Excellent. Do teachers generallyask how you doing? Check in with you?
Respondent: 11:00
Yes, they do check up on me
Moderator: 11:01
Do you think they could do it more? Do you think they do it just enough?
Respondent: 11:11
Just enough, yeah
Moderator: 11:12
Do you have a student council at the school?
Respondent: 11:14
No.
Moderator: 11:15
So, we've mentioned break times and lunch times. Is it easy to spend time with your
friends a break time and lunch time?
Respondent: 11:29
Yeah.
Moderator: 11: 30
And what generally are the other pupils Like? What are the other students like?
Respondent: 11:41
Quite nice
Moderator: 11:42
Yeah. And do you think the school does anything to help? Have everyone being kind
of quite nice to each other? Do you think there's anything the school does to help
that?
Respondent: 12:12
Don’t know
Moderator: 12: 13
Its Okay, what about if students weren't being nice to each other? Is it easy for
students to talk to teachers about that?
Respondent: 12: 25
Not really
Moderator: 12: 30
Why do you think that's tricky?
Respondent: 12:38
No, they don't have to teach and do anything about it.
Moderator: 12:44
How do you think schools can make them better? What do you think a school could
do To make that less tricky?
Respondent: 12:56
Maybe ask the students
Moderator: 13:02
To ask the students more rather than wait for the students to come to them.
Moderator: 13:10
Yeah. Excellent. And what about in the school? What happens when students break
the rules?
Respondent: 13:23
You get C's.
Moderator: 13:25
Okay, tell me more about C's.
Respondent: 13:28
There's like a warning C rule, which has not been exceeded like your last warning. C three is
not going to tempt you at school or like, loss of social time. C four like, same as C three a
year move to a different classroom and C five is like, refocus and stuff like that. And like
exclusion.
Moderator: 13:54
And have you ever experienced any of those C's?
Respondent: 13:58
Yeah
Moderator: 13: 58
And how did that make you feel?
Respondent: 14:05
don’t know
Moderator: 14:15
Do you think it had a negative impact on you?
14:22 Respondent: No, not really.
Moderator: 14:23
Do you think it helped you to kind of understand kind of managing behaviour?
Respondent: 14:32
Yeah,
Moderator: 14:33
Is there anything you would have preferred for the school to do rather than use the
C’s?
Respondent: 14:42
No
Moderator: 14:43
Do you think there's a better way of managing behaviour?
Respondent: 14:58
Some teachers in school Don't [14:59 INAUDIBLE VOICE].
Moderator: 15:06
Now, some people find this difficult question. So, you know, you don't have to answer
if you don't want to. But have you ever felt uncomfortable at school?
Respondent: 15:23
No, not really.
Moderator: 15:25
Do you think generallymost students feel comfortable at school?
15:34 Respondent: Yeah.
Moderator: 15:35
Do you get the feeling that most students feel like they belong? Is there anything you
can think the school could do to make that even better for students to make them feel
even more like they belong?
Respondent: 16:03
I don’t know
Moderator: 16:06
We've mentioned the breaktimes, lunchtimes. What about outside of school? What
kind of things you like outside the school?
Respondent: 16:22
Chat with mates and play PlayStation
Moderator: 16:26
And I guess in terms of doing these things at school, I guess you get the chance to
chat to your mates at school. But maybe not so much have a chance to play
PlayStation att school I know it's a long way away. But have you thought about what
you want to do when you leave school?
Respondent: 16:52
Not much.
Moderator: 16:53
No. You haven't had any ideas about that would be a cool job or a cool thing to do.
Respondent: 17:03
Yeah, a little bit.
Moderator: 17:04
Yeah. What kind of things
Respondent: 17:09
Computer scientist
Moderator: 17:10
Wow, that is cool. And do you think there's stuff you can do at school that can help
you to become a computer scientist?
Respondent: 17:28
Probably computing teachers.
Moderator: 17:32
Yeah. Do you ever get a chance to chat to careers advisors or talk to people about
careers? Do you know if that happens??
Respondent: 17:42
In year 10 Getting good work experience where like you choose where you want to go and
you do that in a week the way you chose
Moderator: 17:56
That sounds pretty cool. You're looking forward to that. What about the best thing
about school? what do you think is your favourite the coolest thing about school can
be anything at all?
Respondent: 18:29
Probably break times and lunch times
Moderator: 18:30
Right tell us what are the school dinners like?
Respondent: 18:32
very nice.
Moderator: 18:33
Yeah. And so, then what about the kind of worse thing you don't really look forward to
that much at all?
Respondent: 18:42
Probably getting to school.
Moderator: 18:54
Yeah. And how come
Respondent: 19:07
Because some days you should have like really bad lessons and somedays you have good
ones.
Moderator: 19:14
Some days really not as good as others from your timetable. Which of the bad days is
today a good day or a bad day?
Respondent: 19:28
Probably bad.
Moderator: 19:31
And on a Monday as well, that's not a great way to start, is it? And is that because of
the lessons that you've got? So, would there be some English and maths going on?
Respondent: 19:44
No English, I have maths and history then I go for science and geography.
Moderator: 19:55
It's quite a busy day. And have you got clubbed This evening.
Respondent: 20:00
Yeah
Moderator: 20:04
that's a good ending though. So how do you get to school each day?
Respondent: 20:15
Sometimes my mom drives me and sometimes I get the bus.
Moderator: 20:18
How long does it take?
Respondent: 20:21
Takes about 5 to 10 minutes when mom drives mt to school and maybe like 20 to 30
minutes when I get to school by bus.
Moderator: 20:28
Okay. Great. Now thinking back to primary school, too, last year what was your
primary school like?
20:42 Respondent: Oh, that's pretty good.
Moderator: 20:43
Did you enjoy it? Were there some things you didn't like?
Respondent: 20:52
Not much.
Moderator: 20:54
Do you think your primary school teachers understood you? understood how you
learn best? Respondent: 21:07
Yeah
Moderator: 21:09
Yeah. And did you Did they do anything in lessons to make learning easier for you
to? to kind of help you out if you found things tricky?
Respondent: 21:26
Yeah, with some of the things
Moderator: 21:27
yeah, and what were some of the things you found useful that you think is a good
thing for schools to do?
Moderator: 21:56
Did you did you have some things that you had? Did you have a break card? That
you could use in primary?
Respondent: 22:06
No, but I'm allowed to go down to do some
Moderator: 22:11
Fantastic. And then transitioning, so moving from primary to secondary? How was
that for you? Respondent: 22:23
That's fine.
Moderator: 22:24
Yeah. Did you feel anxious about it? And was there anything your primary school or
secondary school did to help with that the thought Yeah, that was a good idea
Respondent: 22:42
so, school basically during the summer, people are saying there's a cool week came to
school did some lessons on some days we did some fun stuff on some days. So, on day
seven we split up into groups and we did things to do like the bouncy castle to Animal
person and then
Moderator: 23:12
I'm going to have to ask more about the animal person.
Respondent: 23:18
So, they brought in some insects, lizards, snakes
Moderator: 23:27
That's pretty cool. And you found you thought that was really helpful?
Respondent: 29:31
Yeah.
Moderator: 29:32
And that's something you think is a good thing for schools to do and what did it make
easier for you when you then got to school?
Respondent: 23:46
Go to school day to day
Moderator: 23:51
Did it give you a chance to meet some of the other year sevens?
Respondent: 23:59
Yes
Moderator: 24:00
And was at school that this happened?
Respondent: 24:01
Yes
Moderator: 24: 09
fantastic. And then about transition, what was the first few weeks at secondary school
like
Respondent: 24:17
pretty good.
Moderator: 24:20
Yeah. Was there anything particularly tricky?
Respondent: 24: 30
Not really
Moderator: 24:31
And was there anything that school did to kind of help that time?
Respondent: 24:33
Yes, Hub
Moderator: 24:36
Fantastic. And you got to kind of come and see the hub and know where it was. And
so that was that was this first couple of weeks they put in place. That's great.
Fantastic. What about if we're thinking about now and again, the said before when we
first started you know you can use kind of paper if you want to do any drawings or
anything about this but, I want you to kind of think about what the ideal school would
be like the perfect school. so, let's think about the classroom for example if you could
design the ideal classroom or would it be like? You can think about things like the
way you would sit, how you would sit, what else might be in the classroom for
students
Respondent: 25:51
You can sit wherever you want like not just normal chairs like that spinney chairs and might
be TV
Moderator: 26:24
What about doing your work? Would you have kind of rows of desks or groups?
Would it just be sort of anywhere amongst all these cool seats? It's your design. It's
your choice.
Respondent: 26:50
Probably just do anywhere.
Moderator: 26:53
Wherever people felt comfortable.
26: 54 Respondent: Yeah.
Moderator: 26:55
Fantastic. What about the ideal teacher then? What do you think makes the perfect
teacher? Great Teacher? You have mentioned alreadynot shouting
Respondent: 27:10
Kind and nice
Moderator: 27:29
Kind of their great qualities to highlight there. What about ideal break times?
Respondent: 27:46
Football and stuff and arrange in play tools
Moderator: 28:03
Excellent range, Xbox PlayStation. Fantastic. And what about during lock downs? Did
you go to school during lock downs?
Respondent: 28:19
Some of the students, not most of them
Moderator: 28:23
And how did you find it? Were you able to do any work during that time?
Respondent: 28:28
Yeah.
Moderator: 28:29
Was it easy or trickier to get done?
Respondent: 28:34
Pretty easy to do in the morning, so I just do it the way I wanted
Moderator: 28:42
and did you do any online lessons?
Respondent: 28:46
We did zoom meetings
Moderator: 28:48
And how are they?
Respondent: 28:50
Very good
Moderator: 28:52
Yeah, was it good because you got to see people and excellent. Now, as we
mentioned before, we're going to write this up into a report. And now we're not going
to use your name. But we would love to use a kind of fake name or secret name, too
just so that you know if we talk about you, you'll know it's you know, it can be any
name you like, So What name would you potentially like? You can choose a thing it
can be crazy. It can be silly. Only you will know is your name. You can think of any
favourite fictional character, favourite character of many of your PlayStation games?
Respondent: 29:50
Red North is
Moderator: 30:01
Yeah, yeah. So, we'll go with red North is excellent. And make sure get to know that
red North is. Is there anything else you'd like to tell me about school? Anything else
you think right, [NAME] Yes. As your youth expert, you need to make sure you put
this in about what's good or what's bad. Excellent. And from everything we've spoken
about today, what do you think is the most important thing for me to remember about
young people's experience of school?
Moderator: 32:04
Nothing jumps out. Everything was useful, I think, so thank you so, so much for
taking the time to chat. You've been a fantastic expert.

What about if we're thinking about now and again, the said before when we first started you know you can use kind of paper if you want to do any drawings or anything about this but, I want you to kind of think about what the ideal school would be like the perfect school. so, let's think about the classroom for example if you could design the ideal classroom or would it be like? You can think about things like the way you would sit, how you would sit, what else might be in the classroom for students Respondent: 25:51 You can sit wherever you want like not just normal chairs like that spinney chairs and might be TV Moderator: 26:24 What about doing your work? Moderator: 26:53
  • 22. Wherever people felt comfortable. 26: 54 Respondent: Yeah. Moderator: 26:55 Fantastic. What about the ideal teacher then? What do you think makes the perfect teacher? Great Teacher? • 23. Moderator: 28:29 Was it easy or trickier to get done? Respondent: 28:34 Pretty easy to do in the morning, so I just do it the way I wanted Moderator: 28:42 and did you do any online lessons? Respondent: 28:46 We did zoom meetings Moderator: 28:48 And how are they? Respondent: 28:50 Very good Moderator: 28:52 Yeah, was it good because you got to see people and excellent. Now, as we mentioned before, we're going to write this up into a report. And now we're not going to use your name. But we would love to use a kind of fake name or secret name, too just so that you know if we talk about you, you'll know it's you know, it can be any name you like, So What name would you potentially like? You can choose a thing it can be crazy. It can be silly. Only you will know is your name. You can think of any favourite fictional character, favourite character of many of your PlayStation games? Respondent: 29:50 Red North is Moderator: 30:01
  • 24. Yeah, yeah. So, we'll go with red North is excellent. And make sure get to know that red North is. Is there anything else you'd like to tell me about school? Anything else you think right, [NAME] Yes. As your youth expert, you need to make sure you put this in about what's good or what's bad. Excellent.
