4. Introduction
• According to United Nation’s report women perform 2/3rd
of the world’s work and receive only 10% of income and
own 1% of the total assets
• In the world’s two major fish producing countries, China
and India, women represent respectively 21% and 24%
of all fishers and fish farmers
• It has been estimated that more than 50 million women
are engaged in fisheries through out the world

5. Reasons for participation in Fisheries sector
• Poverty
• Support their men
• Widow / migration of men
• Less opportunities of employment
• Descendant of fishing family

6. Status of women in fisheries in
Indian scenario
• Women in India constitute around 50% of the total
population and constitute 1/3rd of the labour force
• Active Fisher population = 5.4 million
Fishermen = 3.8 million
Fisherwomen = 1.6 million
• The over all Sex ratio is 928 females per 1000 males.
The sex ratio is maximum in Puducherry (982), minimum
in West bengal (865)
• Nearly 44.2% fisherwomen and 40.4% fishermen are
unschooled

7. Women contribution in marine sector
• The major activities, in which the women’s contribution is
noticed through out the country are fish processing and
marketing

More than 90% in prawn peeling
70% in the processing of other fishery products

gender imbalances
• This would mobilize the remaining 50% of the country’s
human resources and would result in smooth movement
of economic wheel
• National policies should be resolute in tackling this issue
and local bodies should ensure the implementation of
these policies at the community level
