2. EARLY LIFE
Marquis de Lafayette, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier, was born into a family of noble
military lineage on September 6, 1757, in Chavaniac, France. His father was killed in battle during the
Seven Year War, and later, his mother and grandfather died in 1770, which left him very wealthy.
3. THE YOUNG MAN
At the age of 14, he enlisted in the French military. 2 years later, he married Adrienne de Noailles, the
daughter in one of France’s richest families.
4. INTRODUCED TO AMERICA
Marquis de Lafayette was introduced to the revolution going on in America, and he became intrigued by
the excitement very quickly. Lafayette wanted to go and see it, but he knew that the King would
disapprove.
5. JOINING THE JOURNEY
Lafayette knew that the King would disapprove, but he wanted to see it anyway, so he talked to his friend
Comte de Broglie. Broglie introduced him to Baron Johan de Kalb, who was also seeking to travel to
America. After a few tries, the men finally managed to voyage across the Atlantic as commissioned
generals
6. THE DEATH OF LAFAYETTE
Marquis de Lafayette died on May 20, 1834. The great general’s name will never be forgotten in our
history.
