1. The CE:BE program is now in its 2nd
year of operation and has been
instrumental in opening up the eyes
of students to a wide range of career
opportunities within the Construction
sector.
The program has continued to deliver
young people, who already possess
the essential skills sets, which will
enable them to enter into a career
within the industry.
In the first year, the students had the
opportunity to put their on-going
studies into both a practical and work
related context, which generates the
necessary energy and enthusiasm for
today’s world of work.
Students have participated in a
number of work based placements;
site visits and masterclasses, while
gaining a valuable insight into the
daily workings of the Construction
industry. Importantly, each of the
associate CE:BE partner businesses,
have played an integral role in acting
as mentors, in order to help instill the
skills needed for a successful career.
What We Have Been Up To?
2015 was a busy year for the CE:BE
students, as the various cohorts
actively participated in a scheduled
enrichment program across the region.
This particular aspect of the program
helps to link actual working practice, to
what is contained in the Built
Environment curriculum.
The enrichment activities included the
following agenda:
The Selection Process at the STEM
Centre
Various Field Trips and Site Visits
Incommunities Interbuild Competition
Construction Trades Competition
Classroom in Construction
Masterclasses in Health & Safety and
Employability Skills
End of Year Celebration Event
Lego Selection Days
The students and pupils were invited to
participate in a full day of planned
activities that helped demonstrate
personal attributes such as teamwork;
organization; communication; problem
solving and leadership skills, to name
but a few.
The activities were carefully designed
to stretch and challenge the students’
individual abilities. The exercises
included the construction of two
technical Lego models, with
articulated moving parts. While the
other challenges incorporated a floor
plan, which had to be marked out to
scale and the calculation of a simple
Bill of Quantities.
Masterclasses
The students also had the opportunity
to gain real knowledge from the
industry professionals, by
participating in a number of
Masterclasses.

2. CE:BE Competition Day
Bradford College hosted a CE:BE trade
skills competition in December 2015,
with participants coming from both
Carlton Bolling College and Tong
Upper School. The pupils were split
into a number of mixed teams, which
were comprised from both schools,
before the event started.
Those who undertook the Brickwork
aspect of the event, were required to
build a number of decorative brick
walls, whereas the Joinery based
teams were expected to manufacture a
series of garden gates.
Although the tasks were all practical
based, the activities also focused on
gauging the individual participant’s
ability to work cohesively as a team.
Therefore, the pupils had to utilise
attributes such as leadership,
delegation, communication,
organisation and problem solving skills.
Site Visits
All the CEBE students had the
opportunity to apply their learning in the
classroom to the real world of work.
They visited a number of new build
projects such as the Barratt David
Wilson Homes site at St Andrews in
Morley. They also had the chance to
tour the Wates Construction site, where
the new Forsters Academy School was
under construction.
Students travelled beyond Bradford to
Hanson Aggregate and Saint Gobain
Glass, in order to better understand
how products are manufactured, thus
reinforcing the national and global
opportunities within the built
environment.
As a result of the CEBE program 5 of
the existing students have been offered
apprenticeship opportunities with all
CEBE students experiencing real work.
Moving Forward in 2016
Groundwork and Streetworks
Centre
2016 is anticipated to be another busy
year for the CE:BE program, as the
scheme has added 23 new associate
business partners to the existing pool.
This has resulted in CE:BE liaising
closely with local employers, which has
identified a skills gap for Street and
Groundwork operatives. This has
furthered our discussions with
Yorkshire Water to build a
Groundworks Centre at their Esholt
based site.
Our intention is to increase the
opportunities for students to undertake
qualifications in this particular field,
which will help to develop CE:BE
students and then feed them directly
to the employers, as job opportunities
emerge.
Virtual Classroom
A House refurbishment programme is
also being developed, in partnership
with Incommunities and Bradford
Council. CEBE students will undertake
experiential learning within a “virtual
classroom”, utilising the skills they have
learned during their studies. They will
help to renovate a number of derelict
houses, prior to the properties being
sold on the open market.
Never Been a Better Time
The new Apprenticeship Levy will be
introduced in April 2017, at a rate of
0.5 per cent of an employer’s payroll.
All prospective employers will receive
an allowance of £15,000 to offset
against payment of the levy. This
effectively means that the levy will
only be payable on payroll in excess
of £3 million per year.
With only 12 months to go before the
levy, now is the right time for firms to
create and test their Apprenticeship
scheme. By taking advantage of the
current government funded
apprenticeship programme, firms can
minimise the risks associated with the
levy and maximise their opportunity.
There has never been a better time
for employers to actively take on new
apprentices. Consequently, CE:BE
are able to offer companies existing
candidates, who have been carefully
selected to participate in the
programme.
