2. Scotland’s issues
• Positional structure
• Starting attacks wide a wide pass into the FB to build from there
• Height of FBs
• Poor positions of DM and CMs relative to the opponent
• Too many players disconnected in advanced areas
• No positioning based on the opponent shape – all pattern play
• Decision Making in possession
• Defensive shape and lack of pressure on the ball
• Poor attacking movement from throw ins in the final 3rd

3. Tactical Theory –
attacking v a 5-3-2
4v2
3v2
3v2
3v2
As they have 2 in the 1st line, we can easily
create a 4v2 and split the 1st line either using
the DM behind the 2 or the CBs around the 2
We need the FBs to push high and stretch
the midfield line of 3 to create superiority for
the central midfielders between the lines
With a back 5, we can isolate the far side FB
during switches and use the pendular
movements to press to pull out the FB, make
runs behind the FB to pull over a CB and
reduce the numbers they have defending the
box. This requires a good structure around
and behind the ball with well timed runs to
go behind the defensive unit.

5. Tactical Theory –
attacking v a 5-3-2
Here we can see Croatia patiently move the
ball with structure. Behind and around the
ball. Both wingers pin the back 5 in place,
stopping the FBs moving out to press.
This releases the far side FB who is unmarked
into a dangerous area.
From here, we can have the winger run
behind, the CM run between CB and FB, or
simply have the RB advance and cross when
ready to have runners attack on the
blindside.
It is important to understand the weakness
of the system and identify how to get the ball
into good positions.
Against a 5-3-2, direct switches of play are a
valuable weapon to create territorial
advantages to find scoring chances.

6. Systems of play: Scotland433 v 532Kazakh
Opening 14 mins 2-0 Kazakhstan
FBs too flat and deep, disconnected from
midfield and not affecting the game
Scotland poor positioning inside the
defensive block, forces play wide into
areas which Kazakhstan want to defend

15. Scotland lack a central presence to build
attacks or offer any threat centrally
Palmer connects Bates to Forrest. Midfield
positions between the lines don’t support
a direct pass with back to goal receiver
Attacking throw ins. Few players and no central
presence inside the box. Burke / McBurnie /
Armstrong / McGinn should attack the red zones
Attacking throw in v
a back 5. No central
presence. No way of
scoring. No threat

16. Scotland poor movement in midfield
By playing ‘between &

superiority and drag markers

17. • Any team playing 5-3-2 at home with minimal pressure beyond the
half way line will look to block the middle, force play wide and
counter with direct passes into space or switch to the far side
• Using 2 forwards allows more mobility into wide spaces
• Deeper wing backs will allow security when making back passes to go
long and release the near side CM to support the counter
• It was obvious early on that Kazakhstan would move the counter
down Scotland’s right, often through several short passes before a
long switch to the left back who has a good delivery (3rd goal)

20. Scotland’s Defensive Issues
No pressure on the
ball, CM able to
pass over the
defence easily
The back 4 are too close to the midfield
with no presence between the lines to
defend. They must drop off based on
the only threat being a ball over the
top. Shinnie cant step up for offside3/22/2019

24. Summary
• I didn’t want to watch past the 3rd goal
• Scotland showed no respect to the opponent
• Scotland had no tactical awareness
• Scotland played off weak patterns which left them exposed
• Bates needed more support to utilise his footballing abilities
• McGinn and McGregor should’ve played closer together
• Armstrong needed more support behind to play higher
• Shinnie should play as a left sided CB and leave the wing alone
• Palmer took too long to do anything and lacked urgency
• McBurnie played outside dangerous areas too often
• Positional principles work better than patterns of play in modern football
