SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
Mechatronic Systems Engineering integrates mechanical,
electronics, control, software, and computer engineering for the
development of electromechanical products and systems used
in a range of industries including automotive, manufacturing,
robotics, biomedical, service, aerospace, consumer electronics,
and countless others. It includes the study of mechatronic and
mechanical design, CAD, fluid mechanic, thermal dynamics
and heat transfer, machine design, electronic circuits, power
electronics and electric machines, electromechanical sensors
and actuators, industrial controls, real time and embedded
systems.
SKILLS
Machine design, machine operations, testing, programming,
electronics, design, CAD, PLC, embedded systems, control
systems, robotics and electromechanical systems, electric
machinery, mechanical systems and design,FEA, engineering
materials, advanced manufacturing, alternative power systems.

Electromechanical Engineer, Renewable and Alternative Energy
Engineer, Power Systems Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
3. CAPSTONE, THESIS AND
RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS
In their final year all students participate in an eight month capstone project which can be industry sponsored. These projects allow
industry to tap into the resources at SFU Mechatronics and have student groups of 4-5 members work under the supervision of a
professionally designated engineering faculty member and they are responsible for proposing, conceptualizing, designing, building
an demonstrating a new engineering solution to meet a specific company need or problem. Students also learn about engineering
standards, how to design for safety and human factors.
Honour students complete a thesis in which they work independently on a problem of reasonably large scope and identify, analyse and
propose a good solution.
Our Mechatronic Systems Engineering faculty actively embark on SFU’s vision of being Canada’s leading engaged university through
their extensive industry research collaborations. Industry is supported to develop new emerging technologies, create alternative energy
and or resolve unique company specific engineering issues through a variety of research and development partnerships and faculty
accessed grants.
