3. TheCauses of
Ischemic
Strokes
The majority of strokes that occur in the United States are classified
as ischemic strokes. In fact, ischemic strokes account for nearly 90
percent of all strokes. An obstruction in one of the blood vessels that
serve the brain causes an ischemic stroke. Such an obstruction could
take the form of a cerebral thrombosis or a cerebral embolism.
4. TheCauses of
Ischemic
Strokes
A cerebral thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the
brain’s blood vessels, in a section that has been clogged by
atherosclerosis. By contrast, a cerebral embolism is a clot that forms
elsewhere within the circulatory system before ultimately causing
an obstruction in one of the brain’s blood vessels. The heart and the
arteries in the chest and neck are common locations for the
formation of embolisms.
