1. Sub
CleanOxide 75 - Applications
CleanOxide 75 from Activ8H2O is the simple modern
method of generating high purity chlorine dioxide as and
when required by mixing two precursor solutions (see
Activ8H2O brochure CleanOxide 75 for more information).
CleanOxide 75 is a 0.75% solution of chlorine dioxide in
water containing only a small amount of sodium sulphate
and sodium chloride as by-products of mixing.
• CleanOxide 75 is effective over a broad pH
range (4-10).
• CleanOxide 75 controls bacteria, fungi, viruses,
biofilm and algae.
• CleanOxide 75 does not react with ammonia and
does not produce toxic compounds in contact
with organic materials present in water.
• CleanOxide 75 is effective at lower dose rates
than chlorine or bromine.
• Microorganisms do not develop resistance to
CleanOxide 75
• CleanOxide 75 rapidly degrades to harmless
inorganic chemicals when exposed to sunlight
2. Applications
The applications listed below are intended
as a guide to the versatility of CleanOxide
75 across a number of industries. All
recommendations are subject to local
conditions and regulations which should be
consulted before using this product.
CleanOxide 75 is a very powerful and effective surface
disinfectant at the recommended dose rates. Materials to be
disinfected must be thoroughly cleaned before treating with
CleanOxide 75 to achieve optimum results.
CleanOxide 75 should not be mixed with any other chemicals
prior to use as this may substantially reduce its effectiveness as
a disinfectant.
Disinfecting potable water
The recommended dose rate for disinfecting potable water is
50mL CleanOxide 75 per 1000L water.
At this dose rate, CleanOxide 75 will render the water safe for
drinking without imparting any undesirable taste or odour to
the water.
Disinfecting non-potable water
The recommended dose rate for disinfecting non-potable
water is 250mL CleanOxide 75 per 1000L water.
Disinfecting hard surfaces and equipment
The recommended rate for water used for disinfecting hard
surfaces including walls, floors and equipment is 0.5 - 1L
CleanOxide 75 per 1000L of water.
Food Processing
CleanOxide 75 can safely be used for washing fruit and
vegetables, seafood, mushrooms and many other foodstuffs.
CleanOxide 75 destroys bacteria including potentially harmful
pathogens such as E.coli, as well as controlling fungi and
fungal spores ensuring reduced risk for the consumer and
increased shelf life for the produce. Residual chlorine dioxide
left on the produce degrades rapidly leaving no harmful
residues.
Residual chlorine dioxide in the waste water from the cleaning
process is also rapidly biodegraded to harmless inorganic
materials. Consequently disposal of waste water poses no
environmental hazard.
Chlorine dioxide is permitted as a processing aid for all foods
(FSANZ Standard 1.3.3) provided the final food contains no
more than 1mg/kg chlorine dioxide. At the recommended
dose rates below, CleanOxide 75 conforms to this standard.
Application CleanOxide 75
per 1000L water Comments
Fish 1L
Solution is suitable for gutted and de-scaled fish. Soak for at
least one minute to increase shelf life and reduce odour.
Fish fillets 0.5L
Soak in this solution for at least one minute to increase shelf
life and reduce odour.
Shellfish 2L
Soak in this solution for at least one minute. Use at half
this rate in cooling water to maintain sanitary conditions. Increases
shelf life and preserves freshness.
Prawns and shrimps 0.25L
Dose brine tanks holding freshly caught prawns and shrimps.
Maintain adequate chlorine dioxide level by dosing every one
to two days.
Fruit and Vegetables 0.5L
Wash unpeeled fruit and vegetables post harvest in this
solution to increase shelf life and maintain freshness.
Salads 0.5L
Soak salad greens in this solution for at least one minute prior
to packaging to increase shelf life and maintain colour.
Mushrooms 1L
Solution reduces bacterial blotch on the surface of
mushrooms. Allow at least one minute contact time.
3. Application CleanOxide 75
per 1000L water Comments
Process water 0.5L
Process water should be dosed via an automated
system to ensure adequate levels of disinfection are
maintained. Complete site coverage is provided by
dosing incoming water.
Storage areas 0.5L
Sanitises storage areas and controls odours.
Alternatively, use process water if dosed as above with
CleanOxide 75.
Fishing vessels 5L
Wash all hard surfaces with this solution to disinfect
and control odour. Spray or fog holds. Do not rinse after
soaking.
Equipment 2.5L
Disinfect all equipment used in processing seafood by
soaking in this solution for at least one minute. Do not
rinse after soaking.
Ice is used in many food related applications especially for
storage of seafood. Dosing the feed water for ice making
machines with CleanOxide not only disinfects the water but
also, as the ice melts, destroys surface bacteria helping to
maintain freshness of the catch and reducing odour.
The recommended treatment rate for the feed water to the
ice making machine is 0.5L CleanOxide per 1000L water.
In addition to washing seafood and fish and treating ice as
detailed above, CleanOxide 75 can be used for disinfecting
hard surfaces in processing facilities, cleaning equipment,
treating process water, cleaning storage areas and fishing
boats. Regular use of CleanOxide will maintain sanitary
conditions, control build up of biofilm and contribute
significantly to reducing odour.
CleanOxide 75 can be used in any situation where control of
bacteria, fungi or algae is required.
CleanOxide 75 is not registered by the APVMA for control
of diseases of growing plants. The recommendations below
should not be construed as advocating the use of CleanOxide
75 for controlling pathogens on growing plants. However,
CleanOxide 75 does have a role in controlling the spread of
plant diseases by disinfecting equipment, tools, hard surfaces,
pots, seed trays, irrigation lines, floors, walls, etc that may
harbour pathogenic organisms.
Chlorine dioxide is generally reported to have low
phytotoxicity; however, it is recommended that where there is
the potential for solutions containing chlorine dioxide to come
into contact with growing plants, the solution should
not contain more than a nominal 4mg/L chlorine dioxide (0.5L
CleanOxide 75 per 1000L water).
4. CleanOxide 75 - Applications
The following tables give the approximate concentration of
chlorine dioxide obtained when freshly prepared CleanOxide
75 is diluted with potable water. Actual concentrations
obtained will depend on the age of the CleanOxide 75 solution
and the quality of the water. Once diluted for use, solutions
should be used immediately.
