HELP PREVENT SHORE POWER FAILURE AND FIRES WITH SAFETY TIPS
Many marina fires can be prevented if shore power systems are of high quality and regularly
inspected. Despite being a critical and yet potentially dangerous system on boats, shore power is typically
subjected to the full extent of the surrounding marine environment, on a daily basis.
If the early warning signs go undetected, a neglected connector or inlet can eventually lead to shore
power system failure or fire. Often, these early warning signs can be easily identified and corrected before a
larger problem occurs.
All inlets and connectors should be looked over for:
-Pitting or corrosion of the pins
-Slight browning of the plastic
-Obvious scorched or melted plastic
-Charred or smoky odor
Regular inspection of a boat's shore power connectors
using the safety criteria listed above can go a long way toward
protecting a boat from the all-too-common occurrences of shore
power failure or fire.
With a SmartPlug system, you can assure your customer that this is a problem of the past.
SmartPlug's patented thermostat is designed to cut the power before an overheating event can occur. This
thermostat is the
only device available which trips as a result of too much resistance, typically caused by a corroded or loose
connection. Breakers and GFCIs are useless in this regard as they trip as a result of too much electrical
current or electrical leakage.
SmartPlug's patented multi-point locking system also ensures that the connection remains rock solid
and weatherproof, minimizing the risk of corrosion or loose connections from occurring in the first place. Its
unique sleeve configuration nests the plug and inlet together, making aligning the pins a snap. Any pressure
or force is absorbed by the assembly's body and not the electrical pins. Due to an innovative shape, it can
only be plugged in one way.
Its straight electrical pins provide a 20 times greater contact area than thin, curved pins found on
round-style plugs. Once the sleeve is aligned, the three blades slide straight into the connector, no twisting
is required. SmartPlug is also constructed with tinned wire.
