2. FURNITURE CLEANABILITY
LABELS
Before conducting any deep cleaning, pay attention
to your furniture cleanability labels. The furniture
industry has adopted a uniform cleanability code
that is easy to understand. Look for this care label
when shopping for furniture and file it for reference
when cleaning is needed. Depending on the code on
the tag, you may use water-based cleaners (code W),
Solvent cleaners (code S), or none at all (code X –
Vacuum Only).
3. Previous Chemical
Residues
Check for previous chemical residues. Traces of detergent
or cleaning solvents can adhere to fabrics and solidify
after a deep cleaning. Once the sticky or waxy residue
gets on the fibers, it usually remains until it is flushed
out. If you suspect that a residue is already present on
the upholstery fabric, place a tablespoon of warm water
on a spot and work it in with the fingers. A foam or a
slippery feeling will indicate a detergent residue. The
best way to remove this type of residue is by the hot
water extraction method with clear water.
4. Before using a steam cleaner on your furniture, read
carefully the instructions that come with the equipment
and the cleaning product of your choice. Test all cleaning
solutions, in the concentration they will be used, on the
most inconspicuous area of the furniture. Next, Vacuum
the furniture thoroughly to remove dust and gritty dirt
with a canister vacuum.

5. Fill the steam cleaner with water
and the cleaning solution, and
allow it to heat up for a few
minutes. The next step is to extract
and flush out all the dirt, soils, oils,
and chemical residue from the
upholstery by gently scrubbing the
fabric with the nozzle. Make sure to
scrub in a single direction when
pulling all excess water out and
watch out for over-wetting or
heating, since this can cause
damage, shrinkage, and loss of
bunk in some types of yarns.

6. Other Tips
Avoid removing zippered cushion covers. Zippers are
installed by the manufacturer for a better fit, and the covers
are not made to be removed for cleaning. If cleaned
separately, covers can shrink, become distorted, and the
mechanical action can cause seams to fray.
Do not get the furniture too wet. Open your windows, use a
fan or hairdryer to hasten drying. Vacuum again after three
days to remove any excess residue and then two to four times
a month.
