Sonamhas workedonthe Enterprise Claims OperationSystem (ECOS) projectformore than 2
years(2013-2015). This projectisa rewrite of the Hartford’sClaimsystemalongwiththe reportingData
Warehouse. Sonamhasworkedas BusinessAnalystfor the Data Warehouse part of the project.
Whenshe firststartedas a vendorBA she had goodskills,butitwasher growthintothe leadBA role on
the projectthat was impressive. Forthe last 6 monthsto a yearshe became the leadBA on the project
solvingcomplexdataproblemsandbeingthe focuspointforthe businesscustomersof the project.
Sonambecame an expertincreatingandmaintainingthe requirementdocumentationneeded
for the project. Her requirementwritingskillsare excellent. She writesclearandprecise requirements
that were understoodbythe businessandthe technical developmentteam. She became especially
goodwithcontrollingavery complexmapping documentthat documentedall phasesof the movement
of data fromthe frontendscreenthroughthe loadprocessandto the deliverylayerforreporting. She
alsobecame verygoodwiththe BUS Matrix document. Thisdocumentisusedat The Hartford to
documentreportingrequirementsforadimensional datamodel. The ECOSprojectcreateda complex
dimensional model forbusinessintelligencereporting,andthe BUS Matrix document, usedthe
gatheredbusinessreportingrequirements,tohelpdesignthe model. Thisdocumentiscomplexandnot
all BA’sare able to pickthisup,but Sonamsoon masteredthe documentandwasthe chief authorfor
the project. Thisshowed thatshe understoodthe reportingandthe designof the model togetthe best
reportingresults.
The ECOS data projectpullsdatafrom a newclaims administration front endproduct. Sonam quickly
became an expertonhowthe data wascollectedinthe frontend productand the screen processflow
to betterunderstandhowthe dataisusedin reporting. Manyof the reportingrequirementswere
basedon whatthe businesssawonthe Front endscreens. She thenusedthe knowledge of the dataon
the screensto howitis storedinthe data base. Thisallowedhertounderstandhow togetthe data that
the businesswasaskingfor. Herfront endexpertiseisagoodexample of herlearninganew skill that
became a tool to provide excellentcustomersupportforthe project.
2. Anotherskill thatshe addedtoherskill setis data analysis. She became verygoodat lookingat
the data in the warehouse stagingtablesalongwiththe frontenddatabases. Thisdata analysisallowed
herto create comprehensiverequirementsthatdeliveredqualitydatatothe business. She alsoused
thisanalysistofindandcorrect defects veryefficiently. Thisskill isnotprevalentinmanyBA’sbutreally
helpedSonamtobecome more valuable tothe projectandthe business.
A skill thatSonamworkedveryhardat and became verygoodat is communication. This
includedcommunicationwith Informationmanagementteammembers,includingprojectmanager,
developers,modelersandtester. Thisallowedhertobe veryeffectivewithherrequirementssothat
theycouldbe developedandtestedefficiently. Thisalsoincludes communicationto the business,both
the reportwritersand the reportusers. She workedhardon herrequirementelicitationskills,andwas
able to leadrequirementsessionswithalarge numberof businessusersinattendance. Her response to
businessquestionsandissueswasalwaysontime andcomplete. The bestwayto measure thisisin the
response of the businesswhenSonamleftus. The businesshasmade itclear how much theyliked her
work and howmuch theymissher.
I have enjoyedworkingwith SonamandI’mverysorryto lose heras a BA onour team. I will
missherknowledge and herskill,andherabilitytogetthe jobdone right! She isa firstrate BA and I
