Brief History with current advancements
Indian Railways was dependent upon Telecom Dept. for
their Control Administrative Communication circuits.
In 1983, Railway Reforms Committee decided to
introduce OFC based communications in IR.
In 2000, formation of a telecom corporation to build a
Nation-wide Broadband Multimedia Telecom Network
was announced. RailTel was born.
Advancements
32500 km of OFC laid,over 29500 km commissioned.
Obtained IP-2 license: started commercial bandwidth leasing.
Established India’s first STM-16 based network.
Entered into the exclusive club of Mini-Ratna (Category-I)
Enterprises. Working towards Next Generation Telecom Tech.

Backbone(OFC): Robust, reliable, high speed,
connecting 3,200 cities. Upon STM-16 and DWDM
Technologies and speed upto 400 Gbit/s.
MPLS: Built over Juniper high-speed routers. Supports
VPN services, multicast addresses, etc. over SDH
networks. Spread:40 cities. Using STM-1 capacity.
NGN: State of the art networks. Build on NLD Services.
Being used to transit Inter circle Voice call of various
mobile operators. Spread: 18 cities. Offering VAS.
WiFi and WiMax: RailTel has started making various
Railway stations Wi-Fi/WiMAX enabled. Extending to
rural areas with VoIP,broadcasting and other features.
Cyber cafes: RailTel plans to open Cyber Cafes on

RailWire rural broadband service: a high capacity
broadband service launched in rural areas at affordable
rates. A joint venture with MSOs to provide Voice, Video
and Multimedia access on a single wire at home/office.
Tie up with Eros Now: Eros Now and RailTel have
announced a tie-up through which former’s video
streaming services will be launched on latter’s broadband.
Tie up with Google to equip 400 railway stations in the
country with high speed Wi-Fi networks, making it one of
the largest public Wi-Fi projects in the world.
Awarded in 2015: RailTel bagged the 12th National
Awards for Excellence in Cost Management 2014.
