Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease. It
mainly affects the peripheral nervous
system. It also affects the skin, muscles,
eyes, bones, testes and internal organs. It
is also known as "Hansen's disease".
Causative agent
Mycobacterium leprae- an acid fast bacilli

4. Source of infection
Multibacillary cases (lepromatous and
borderline lepromatous cases) are the
most important source in community.
Mode of transmission
• Droplet infection
• Direct contact

5. Incubation period
3-5 years.
Clinical features
Following are the cardinal features of
the leprosy
😊 Hypopigmented patches
😊Partial or total loss of cutaneous
sensation in in the affected area.
😊 Presence of thickened nerve.
😊 Presence of acid-fast bacilli in the
skin or nasal smears.
