I refer to “High-risk arrivals” (The Star, Dec 29) and feel highly appreciate and thankful
to our KLIA’s Custom Department’s serious action to curb the drug smugglers intention to
make our country to become drug transition centre. The continues in strictness and tighter
inspection we hope can prevent the drug culprits activity in this country. The changing of
usual routes and too many new techniques using by the drug syndicates is a great challenge to
our KLIA Custom Department. Bravo and continue your work!
Lately, our country has chosen by the various drug syndicates as their middle station before
distribute the drugs to other countries. If we failed to eliminate their dirty work, is not only make
the youngsters in this country can become the victim but the image of the country were well known
among the foreign tourists will badly effected. In addition, the security system at our country’s main
entrance can become questionable by other countries. In long run this phenomena can be hurdles for
our FDI.
More importantly, our enforcement unit have need to up to upgrade their knowledge and
technique about the drug dealing in an international level to culminate the international drug
dealer’s activity in this region. To debilitate the syndicate’s activity, our enforcement officers need
tight their close tie with their counterpart in other countries, especially the Interpol. Both parties
need to exchange the very recent information about the international drug dealers details, the very
often route using by this culprits, and the various technique use by theses smugglers. Collection of
this information can be use by the local anti-drug unit to detect and verify the possibilities of
different ways possibly practice by these culprits. More over we have to think in their way to ease
the way to identify their weakness.
The total safety of the country mainly focuses on the main entrance of this country such
airports, ports and international borders. So, if our authorities have enough evidence like the
syndicate used to fly from the Gulf and India and some other suspicious country there were no harm
our officers filtering them thoroughly. I we found that the two filtering processes is not safe enough
add one or two more stages to ensure our main entrance is accurately safe to bass by.
Case like the drugs kept by the syndicates in a hidden compartment at the bottom of the bag
covered neatly by a piece of carbon is proven that the drug dealers move with more advanced
technique. It also urge our authorities need to equipped with most sophisticated. Our officers have
to move one or more step further as advance to detect the drugs were possibly hidden in various
parts in the flights, ships or in any other vehicles.
It is good move that the luggage’sgoing be scanned twice for suspicious items. I added here,
the accuracy of the scanners also need check all the time and if the custom feels the scanners not up
to the standard needed in the current situation, have to replace with most sophisticated scanners. I
suggested that if the two stages of filtering not create any confidence among the officers it have add
one or two more stages of filtering to just ensure that everything in safe mode.
Adding the number of officers at the airport too good to speed up the filtering process. But
the most important is Custom Department need to make sure all the personals fulfil the higher level
of proficiency, capability and efficiency when doing the job. Any incompetency among these
officers can tarnish the image of the department.
Lastly, we should not allowed our country to be misuse by the unscrupulous drug dealers.
Moving towards 2020 and to ensure our country can become well developed in this region can torn
by this kind of social disasters. Our country need long term high level security system at our main
entrance.
