Coaxial Cable - Basics
Coaxial cable moves (transmits RF energy
(power) from point “A” to point “B” with
maximum efficiency (minimum loss)
Minimum loss = maximum power to the
antenna for optimum coverage (footprint)
Tradeoffs - size, handling and cost versus
minimum loss
Loss Calculator
12. 12 / TMS Title or job number / 1/12/2015
Coax Cable Design - Electrical
Attenuation (Loss):
• Measure of efficiency
– The larger the cable, the lower the loss
– The lower the loss, the higher the efficiency
• Loss (dB) = 10 x log (Power In/Power Out)
– 3dB loss = 50% efficiency (PI/PO = 2/1)
– 0 dB (no loss) = 100% efficiency
• Cable loss is proportional to length & square root of
frequency
13. 13 / TMS Title or job number / 1/12/2015
Coax Cable Design - Electrical
VSWR (Return Loss):
• Voltage Standing Wave Ratio
• Electrical uniformity (ZO) versus frequency
• The lower the VSWR, the better 1.10:1 up to 1.30:1 is typical for
LMR - 98% to 99.8% efficient
• Field measure of system “goodness”
• VSWR Calculator

Applications overview
LP-BTR-N
DC blocked single transmitter design for 20 -
1000MHz applications with surge side capacitor
coupled. These designs are intended for non-
combining applications. The RF power rating varies
over the specified frequency range.
LP-STR/STRL-N/D
DC blocked for isolation of antenna and equipment
ports from 680 – 2.5GHz. A dc shorted surge side &
capacitor coupled protected side minimize
throughput energy. Will not pass dc voltage on the
center pin.
LP-GTR-N/D
DC pass designs for applications requiring voltage
to be supplied to Tower Top mounted equipment.
Selection of RF Power and DC Voltage is critical to
ensure proper operation.

A typical Lightning Protector conducts
lightning surge current to ground while
maintaining a low voltage from center
pin to shield/ground. Resulting voltage
between center conductor and shield is
the surge suppressor’s performance
measurement displayed by the LP-SPT
Displayed voltage should be compared
with the manufacturer’s specifications to
determine status of the protector. A list
of Times Protector breakdown voltages
will be on the website
The LP-SPT Surge Protector Tester
How do I know if my Protector is good?
57. 58 / TMS Title or job number / 1/12/2015
How it works
The LP-SPT consists of a high voltage DC power supply
providing a minimum output of 1kV at approximately 1mA.
This output level provides enough Voltage to cause
breakdown of the transient device to occur without over
driving the device with excessive current.
LP-GPX-05 Protector Breakdown (typical) 6 Vdc
The LP-SPT has a 3.5 digit LCD that displays
device under test (DUT) peak breakdown
Voltage to a resolution of one Volt.
The test voltage is applied at a rise time rate equivalent
to10kV/S, which is slow enough to facilitate valid testing
of the device's rated “dc” breakdown voltage within the
tolerances specified by the device manufacturer.
58. 59 / TMS Title or job number / 1/12/2015
The LP-SPT
- is a robust, simple to use, handheld test instrument.
Although the LCD is capable up
displaying peak breakdown voltage of
up to 2000V, the LP-SPT is limited to
a 1000V output level.
Two type-N connectors (male and
female) at the top of the LP-SPT
provide direct connection of an RF LP
device to the tester. A LED backlit
“TEST” button facilitates operation and
testing of the LP device.
59. 60 / TMS Title or job number / 1/12/2015
• N-type Male and Female connectors
provided for direct protector testing.
• Can test SP Components, e.g. MOV,
Diodes, GT, from any SPD manufacturer
with included test adaptor
• A list of Times Protector breakdown
voltages will be posted on the website
