a. Adjectival Phrase.
An adjective is a word which gives an additional detail about the meaning of a noun. In
an adjectival phrase, the adjective word is the head.
Examples,
Mr. Clinton is wealthy.
Mr. Clinton is a man of great wealth.
The Politician is kind.
The Politician is a man of kind attitude.
They are really enthusiastic.
The adjective enthusiastic is modified by the adverb really to form the
adjectival phrase. It is the complement of the verb are.
Exercises
Identify the adjectival phrase:
1. The Police arrested a man of criminal nature.
2. He led a life devoid of blame.

4. It is useless.

Prepositional Phrase:
Prepositional phrases have a preposition as their head.
Examples,
1. at lunchtime
2. behind the fridge

c. Adverbial Phrase:
Like single adverbs, they modify verbs, adjectives or adverbs. The head is an
adverb. For example:
He opened it extremely
easily.
extremely easily modifies Opened
I'll do it quite soon. quite soon modifies Do
I ran so fast. so fast modifies Ran
He was quite unexpectedly
kind.
quite
unexpectedly
modifies Kind
He came very surprisingly
quickly.
very surprisingly modifies Quickly
Manner with a hammer The carpenter hit the nail with a
hammer.
Place next door The woman who lives next door is a
doctor.
Time before the holidays We must finish our project before the
holidays.
Frequency every month Jodie buys two CDs every month.
Purpose for his mother Jack bought the flowers for his mother.
