The 2014 National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees:
By: Simon Wilby
May 8, 2014
Simon Wilby–
• Simon Wilby born 1970, is a UK native
inventor. He was the inventor of a
solar-powered lithium battery
specially designed for cell phones
arguably the most widely used
telecommunications tool today. This
first to market invention is a
retrofitting battery unit and it is aptly
called “The Smart One.” Learn more
about Simon Wilby's inventions at
www.simonwilby.ws
Frances H. Arnold –
• Directed evolution of enzymes that
enables a wide range of solutions in
fields including chemical
engineering, bioengineering, medici
ne, pharmaceuticals and energy;
Richard DiMarchi –
• Invented / synthesized Insulin
Lispro (Humalog®), a drug that
significantly reduced the risk of life-
threatening complications for
diabetes patients;
Mildred Dresselhaus –
• Development of super lattice
structures and related carbon
technologies that served as the
foundation for the lithium-ion
batteries used today in
computers, cell phones and
automobiles;
Ashok Gadgil–
• Innovative solutions for providing
clean water in the world's developing
nations; He is best known for his work
with two developing-world
technologies: "UV Waterworks" (a
simple and effective and inexpensive
water disinfection system), and the
Berkeley-Darfur Stove (a low-cost
stove to that saves fuelwood in
internally displaced person's camps in
Darfur).
Charles Hull –
• Chuck Hull (Charles W. Hull; born May
12, 1939) is the co-founder, executive vice
president and chief technology officer of 3D
Systems. He is the inventor of the solid
imaging process known as stereolithography
(3D Printing), the first commercial rapid
prototyping technology, and the STL file
format. He made on more than 60 U.S.
patents as well as other patents around the
world in the fields of ion optics and rapid
prototyping. He was inducted into the
National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Howard Aiken –
• Automatic Sequence Controlled
Calculator (ASCC or Mark I), which
was the first large scale digital
automatic calculator in the U.S. and
a precursor to modern computer
technology;
George Antheil & Hedy Lamarr
• Co-Developed and pioneered
Frequency hopping techniques that
are often referenced as an important
development in wireless
communications.
William Bowerman –
• William Jay "Bill" Bowerman (February
19, 1911 – December 24, 1999) was an American
track and field coach and co-founder of
Nike, Inc. Over his career, he trained 31 Olympic
athletes, 51 All-Americans, 12 American record-
holders, 24 NCAA champions and 16 sub-4
minute milers. During his 24 years as coach at
the University of Oregon, the Ducks track and
field team had a winning season every season
but one, attained 4 NCAA titles, and finished in
the top 10 in the nation 16 times. He is the
recipient of the Oxford Cup, Beta Theta Pi's
greatest honor.
Otis Boykin –
• Created Advancements in electrical
resistors that made possible the
steady workings of guided
missiles, pacemakers, televisions, ra
dios, computers, and other electrical
devices.
David Crosthwait –
• Advancements in indoor climate
control technology that made
heating systems in larger buildings
more effective.
• Some of his greatest
accomplishments were for creating
the heating systems for the
Rockefeller Center and New York’s
Radio City Music Hall.
Willis Whitfield –
• Willis Whitfield (December
6, 1919 – November 12, 2012 was an
American physicist and inventor of
the modern cleanroom, a room with
a low level of pollutants used in
manufacturing or scientific
research. His invention earned him
the nickname, "Mr. Clean,"
