2. FAMILY
Definition:
Basically, a family is a group of people that are
related by blood, marriage or legal ties having
economic cooperation .
It is a group of biologically related persons living
together and sharing the common kitchen and
purse.
3. TYPES OF FAMILY
BASED ON SIZE:
Elementary or Nuclear family
Family that consists mostly of a man, his wife and
unmarried children.
It include members of two generations only.
It is most conspicuous in modern European and
Nepalese societies as well.
There is no control of the elders because newly
weds create a separate residence for themselves
which is independent of elders.
4. EXTENDED FAMILY
It consist of a number of nuclear family.
It includes members of three to four generations.
This family is based on close blood ties and in the form of
relatives of both sides i.e. husband’s and wife’s sides.
It is like the joint family of Hindu Society. The eldest male
member is the head of the family.
This type of family found to exist in rural community.
5. BASIS OF BIRTH
The Family of orientation : The family in which an
individual is born and reared is his family of
orientation. It consists of father, mother, brother
and sister.
The Family of procreation: The family where an
individual sets up after his/her marriage is his/her
family of procreation. It consist of husband, wife
and their sons and daughter.
The family of orientation and procreation may live
together under the same roof, but can still can be

Monogamous Family:
This family consists of one husband and
wife, including children and is based on
monogamous marriages.
Polygynous Family:
A family consisting of one husband, and
more than one wife, and all the children
born to all the wives or adopted by each of
them.
Polyandrous Family: A family made up of
one wife and more than one husband,
and the children, either born or adopted
7. CHARACTERISTICS OF FAMILY
Every family provides an individual with a name,
and hence, it is a source of nomenclature.
Family is the group through which descent or
ancestry can be traced.
The family is a unit of emotional and economic
cooperation, where family fulfill the economic
requirements.
Each family is made up of different social roles,
like those of husband, wife, mother, father,

Division of labour, where all members have their
duties and obligations towards each other.
Family helps in propagation of human species
and perpetuation of human race.
Provide residence(it may be paternal ,maternal, or
independent).
Rearing and upbringing of children.
As a social and cultural Bridge ,family members
teach all the basic rules and norms of social life to
a child.
