The Great Poet Nissim Ezekiel
About Poet
 Nissim Ezekiel is a populer figure in the field of indian
writing in English.
 He is one of the greatest poet in English.
 He was born in 1924, Ezekiel earned a master’s degree
in English literature from Mumbai University
 He was awareded the Sahitya Academi Award in 1983
for his poetry collection , ”Letter –Day Psalms”,by the
Sahitya Academi , India’s National Academy of
Letters.
 He started his career as a school teacher but passing
the time, he became a professor at university.
 English professor K.V. Dominic states that, Ezekiel’s
works are valuable because they depict aspacts of the
society’s “Indianness,” or collective identity.
 In his lifetime, he has written so many poems like “The
Night of the Scorpion.” and “Enterprise”, which are
entertaining and enlightening.
 Nissim Ezekiel’s call: Time to Change.
Theme of poem
 The main theme in the “Goodbye Party for Miss
Pushpa T.S.” isn’t the loss of a friend—it’s human
foibles, or character faulets.
 According to Dominic, this is a popular theme among
Ezekiel’s works.
 The poem offers a satirical look at how some people in
India speak English, a device that the poet presumably
used to get an Indian reader to laugh at himself.
 The poem also hints at dramatic irony if the reader
infers that the speaker’s audience at the farewell party
doesn’t know that his English is grammatically
incorrect.
 Bad & ungrammatical english spoken by people of
India.
 This poem is mockery on indian english, not to
indians or India.
Explaination of poem
 Nissim Ezekiel’s poem “Goodbye Party for Miss Pushpa
T.S.” is a satirical and humorous work about how some
semi-educated people in India speak Engish.
 In poem, the speaker says that their dear sister, Miss
Pushpa is living for a foreign country and they all wish
her bon voyage.
 He says that they “are all knowing the sweet nature of
Miss Pushpa who is smiling and smiling for no reason
but simply because she is feeling.”
 The speaker goes on to say that her father was a
renowned advocate in Bulsar or Surat , and that he is
“not remembering ’’ the correct place .
 Then he suddenly remembers that the place is
Surat.
 He seems to be a poor speaker when he points out
the irrelevant fact that he stayed there once with
his uncle’s very old friend whose “wife was cooking
nicely.”
 Again, the speaker starts praising Miss Pushpa, and
says that she is very popular with men and ladies
also.
 Clearly the speaker means Miss Pushpa’s readiness to
do any work, and the unnecessary use of “just” and
“only” exhibits the Indian speaker’s ignorance of the
usage of English words, creating laughter and fun.
 The speaker concludes his amusing speech, saying that
they are wishing Miss Pushpa bon voyage .
 He informs that Miss Pushpa “will do the summing
up”, when the other speakers finish their talk.
 Thus the poet makes fun of the faulty Indian way
talking English.
