welcome
Dear delegates,
On behalf of the committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as you
join us for the 5th edition of NUGSC, held here at UCL. NUGSC has consistently
gone from strength to strength over the years, hosting pioneers, leaders, surgeons
and students from all parts of the UK and beyond. I am proud to continue in the
tradition of my predecessors of this conference – the first for undergraduates in
the country – blending high-quality inspirational keynote talks by high-profile
speakers with excellent and enjoyable workshops.
This year, we have decided to focus on three main themes for our keynote talks:
Surgical Advances, Academic Surgery and Surgical Careers. We believe these
three themes form a crux of what it is like to be a surgeon today, and what we can
expect from surgery in the future. We are delighted to host several internationally-
renowned faculty and RCS Council Members as keynote speakers this year.
Moreover, we are offering an unprecedented array of surgical skills and careers
workshops for you to choose from, all delivered by experts with substantial
experience. We hope you find the workshops rewarding and will welcome any
feedback you may give.
Moreover, with the climate of uncertainty facing the medical profession at present,
it is paramount for medical students to be best-informed about what their options
are once they are qualified, and what impact the proposed changes will have on
their careers. All of us on the NUGSC committee are united by an interest in
surgery, but our aim is not necessarily to persuade you to become a surgeon, but
we will have accomplished something if you leave today with a well-informed and
realistic experience of what surgery is.
Finally, I would like to thank our keynote speakers and workshop facilitators for
taking the time to participate in the conference, our sponsors for supporting us
throughout the year, and the talented and hard-working committee of NUGSC
for putting this day together. We hope you find it useful.
Best Wishes,
Sheikh M B Momin

Cousteau in the 1950s, who used it as a filming base for several films.
Following WWII, Kirk attended Undergraduate Medical School at Charing Cross
Hospital. He became an Anatomy Lecturer at Kings College London and went on
to attend Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital with Prof. Ian
Aird. After holding registrarships at both Charing Cross Hospital and the Royal
Free Hospital, he became a Consultant General Surgery Surgeon at the Royal Free.
He was also a member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England,
and devised the original basic surgical skills (BSS) course, as well as the first
minimal access course, alongside Prof. Sir. Alfred Cuschieri. He also established
the Overseas Doctors Training Scheme, and edited the Royal College Annals of
Surgery.
After retiring from the NHS in 1989, Kirk was appointed an Honorary Consulting
Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital and Honorary Professor of Surgery at University
College London. As well as being former president of the Surgical Section of the
Royal Society of Medicine, the Medical Society of London and the Hunterian

Ms Su-Anna Boddy MS FRCS
Ms Boddy is Senior Consultant Paediatric Urologist at St George’s Hospital
London. She qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1976, was awarded
Fellowship of the College in 1983, an MS (London) in 1992, and trained
in paediatric surgery/urology in London, Birmingham and Leeds. She has
a special interest in caring for children with continence problems through
multidisciplinary team care and also invented an operation to correct
hypospadias.
She loves surgery because of the hands-on approach and the unique atmosphere
in the operating theatre. She finds paediatric surgery particularly appealing
as it’s hugely rewarding talking to parents, and discussing their child’s
condition with them.
Ms Boddy was elected to College Council in 2007 – the seventh woman and
the first mother. She was re-elected for a further 4 years in 2013. She enjoys
the variety because College work is so different from her clinical practice but
still very important to surgery.
She has found that in order to juggle a busy surgical career and family life,
you need to COPE – have Childcare, Communication, Organisation, Planning
and the Energy to Enjoy both lives. Despite this. Ms Boddy has a life outside
surgery. She loves cooking, skiing and restoring her cottage in Greece.

We are proud to be running our own Widening Participation Initiative (WPI), where
sixth-form students who have successfully taken part in our Outreach schemes this
year, including Basic Suturing and Basic Life Support, have been given the opportunity
to attend NUGSC as fully-fledged delegates in order to allow them the opportunity to
fully immerse themselves in the surgical community, and partake in unique workshops
to further their interest in surgery.
They will spend the mornings in lectures and the afternoons in workshops and
interactive lectures to support them in their future application to medical school. It
is a privilege for this conference to have this unique opportunity to support bright
students from all over London, and to give back to the community in this way.

Facilitators: Dr Abi Rajamanoharan, Dr Akil Gani, Dr Nick Chilvers,
				Mr Syed Naqvi
Suturing is a core skill that every doctor should be familiar with. This practical workshop will teach
delegates the basic suturing skills, including simple interurpted and continuous sutures. Delegates
will be able to practise and perfect their suturing skills on high-quality suturing trainers, featuring
specially designed synthetic skin, and under close supervision of skilled surgeons.
Advanced Suturing
Workshop Directors: Mr Ammar Al-Midani
Facilitators: Dr Ali Bahsoun, Mr Moustafa Elsawy, Mr Fungai Dengu
Learn how to carry out more advanced suturing techniques, such as subcuticular suturing and running
locked sutures, which will be on swine tissue. You will also learn how to remove cysts in this workshop.
Because of the nature of the skills in this workshop, we recommend this workshop to those who have
had previous suturing experience. This can be gained by taking part in an earlier ‘Basic Suturing’
workshop.
Tendon Repair
Workshop Directors: Ms Shirley Lyle, Ms Anthea Davy, Ms Chichi
How do you fix a torn tendon? Learn how to carry out the infamous Kessler stitch in order to repair
porcine tendons under close supervision. This is usually taught at core surgical trainee level, so don’t
miss out on this unique undergraduate opportunity! Similar to the advanced suturing workshop, we
recommend this workshop to those with previous suturing experience.
Vascular Anastomoses
Workshop Directors: Mr Obi Agu, Ms Fiona Myint, Mr Muhammad Khalil
Vascular surgery comprises some of the most delicate and high-risk operations. In this workshop,
you will learn how to carry out end-to-end vascular anastomosis under close supervision. After a
brief lecture and demonstration, you will practice on model aortas to provide the optimum suturing
experience. Similar to the advanced suturing workshop, we recommend this workshop to those with
previous suturing experience.
Laparoscopic Skills
Workshop Director: Mr Aaron Southgate
Operating through a small port has revolutionised numerous procedures, across various specialties
including general surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology. In this workshop, you will get hands-on
experience with laparoscopic instruments and perform various tasks including manoeuvring a ball
into a cup, and slicing a fruit open. Some of you may find the fulcrum effect challenging, but, fret not,
Mr Southgate will provide you with some tips and tricks to help!

  • 5. 1 welcome Dear delegates, On behalf of the committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you as you join us for the 5th edition of NUGSC, held here at UCL. NUGSC has consistently gone from strength to strength over the years, hosting pioneers, leaders, surgeons and students from all parts of the UK and beyond. I am proud to continue in the tradition of my predecessors of this conference – the first for undergraduates in the country – blending high-quality inspirational keynote talks by high-profile speakers with excellent and enjoyable workshops. This year, we have decided to focus on three main themes for our keynote talks: Surgical Advances, Academic Surgery and Surgical Careers. We believe these three themes form a crux of what it is like to be a surgeon today, and what we can expect from surgery in the future. We are delighted to host several internationally- renowned faculty and RCS Council Members as keynote speakers this year. Moreover, we are offering an unprecedented array of surgical skills and careers workshops for you to choose from, all delivered by experts with substantial experience. We hope you find the workshops rewarding and will welcome any feedback you may give. Moreover, with the climate of uncertainty facing the medical profession at present, it is paramount for medical students to be best-informed about what their options are once they are qualified, and what impact the proposed changes will have on their careers. All of us on the NUGSC committee are united by an interest in surgery, but our aim is not necessarily to persuade you to become a surgeon, but we will have accomplished something if you leave today with a well-informed and realistic experience of what surgery is. Finally, I would like to thank our keynote speakers and workshop facilitators for taking the time to participate in the conference, our sponsors for supporting us throughout the year, and the talented and hard-working committee of NUGSC for putting this day together. We hope you find it useful. Best Wishes, Sheikh M B Momin President, National Undergraduate & Foundation Surgery Conference 2016 We lcom e

  • 19. 15 We are proud to be running our own Widening Participation Initiative (WPI), where sixth-form students who have successfully taken part in our Outreach schemes this year, including Basic Suturing and Basic Life Support, have been given the opportunity to attend NUGSC as fully-fledged delegates in order to allow them the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the surgical community, and partake in unique workshops to further their interest in surgery. They will spend the mornings in lectures and the afternoons in workshops and interactive lectures to support them in their future application to medical school.
