Dear Reader,
It’s the season of pitter-patter and wisps.
We are all relieved by the monsoon’s soothing
flourish that is a respite from the summer’s
blistering heat. The ‘duckbacks’ and rainguards
are out, so are the scrunchies and extra hold
hairsprays. We present our ‘Rain Diaries’ that
invoke the spirit of change that monsoon brings.
As the landscapes turn lush green across the
nations and you dance in the rain, there is
someone who isn’t very pleased with this turn
of events. I am speaking of your mane!
From hair breakage, oily scalps to frizzed out locks and monsoon ‘Afros’, the
season affects us all differently. Bogged down by the need to change your wardrobe
and lifestyle for the season, your hair and skin often end up at the bottom and bear
the brunt. It is for this reason that our focus this issue is to ensure your rainy days
turn out to be happy days. Our cover story, ‘Off Guard No More’ is a compilation
of hairstyles for every occasion and mood that will have you beating the season. Our
‘Frizz Free forever’ feature is a goldmine of expert tips on this dreaded monsoon
hairmare; from care to style, our experts share trade secrets and knowledge that is
practical and effective. Beauty moghul Shahnaz Husain shares her treasure of
home-made remedies and Ayurvedic tips for any and every monsoon hairmare that
you can whip up with ease. But the trump of the pack is our Beauty cover story- your
guide to best spas in India!
This issue also features candid conversations with Wella luminary Martina Brand
and Sebastian International Design Artist Diva Poulos on their path-breaking
journeys. Blossom Kochhar speaks to us about her effort to nurture the Indian
hairdressing industry by re-launching the Indian chapter of Intercoiffure Mondial,
while a young and rising star Vandana Bharadwaj humbly shares the secret to her
meteoric success. We played the fairy godmother to a reader who desperately craved
a makeover and you can read all about it in ‘Restyle Me’. If you are looking for a
new look yourself, we present three iconic hairstyles created for the Indian woman by
London star stylists Scott and Stewart as well.
For our loyal fans we have taken HAIR to digital platforms so make sure you

Reading the travel issue took me on a journey
with itself. It’s not just the essence of the
content but how elegantly it was presented,
which is commendable. I ended up watching all
the movies suggested in ‘The Cinematic Mane’

personalities of the characters. Keep up the

hair affair
Who doesn’t love a good chick flick, especially the ones set against breathtaking
landscapes? What do our favourite actresses’ hairdos tell us about the women
they portray? ADITI PADIYAR decodes looks from five travel movies.
THE SISTERHOOD OF THE
TRAVELLING PANTS
An iconic coming-of-age movie about four
best friends and their travelling pants.
The Sisterhood…brings out
four unique personalities of the
protagonists through four completely
different hairstyles. Blake Lively’s
straight blonde hair, Alexis Bledel’s
soft black curls, Amber Tamblyn’s
poker straight black hair with
shocking blue highlights and America
Ferrera’s simple cascading black
hair all define and complement their
characters perfectly. As the girls grow
older, in a sequel of the movie, their
hairstyles change too, evolving with
their characters.
THE HOLIDAY
Two women from different
countries swap homes to escape
from their crumbling love lives,
only to rediscover love.
The poster is a perfect
example of the starkly
different characters
Cameron Diaz and Kate
Winslet play and how well
their hair defines them.
Diaz’s chic blonde and
perfectly maintained hair
reflect her always well-
put-together personality,
whereas Winslet’s soft
brown hair with golden
highlights tied in a basic
half pony is exactly who
her character is, simple
and unconcerned with
appearances.
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN
A divorced writer moves to Tuscany on a whim,
hoping to find love and love does, indeed, find
her.
Diane Lane’s character buys a villa in
Tuscany, hoping her Tuscan life can
rekindle her love life. The character’s
optimism and positive outlook can be
gauged from her smile as well as her
radiant brown waves, swept sideways. The
hairstyle itself is quite simple and no frills
but the bouncy and healthy hair liven up
her face, exuding a certain thrill you see in
someone who’s excited at the prospect
of starting life anew. As the movie
progresses, we see Lane’s hair undergo
many a different looks, switching between
a shade of burnt orange and soft blonde.
EAT PRAY LOVE
The story of one woman’s mid-life crisis and a long and fulfilling journey of self-discovery.
Incidentally, the way we wear our hair is an expression of our moods, not only
in that moment but also of where we are in our lives. In the upper half of the
poster, Julia Roberts’ character has embarked on a journey of self-discovery,
a jumble of nervousness and apprehension, punctuated by joy and laughter.
Roberts looks happy here but has a long way to go in her journey, her soft
brown hair, relaxed yet tied up in an inconspicuous ponytail, keeping with
her casual look. Her hair in the bottom half, towards the climax of the movie
however says a different story. Roberts’ character has finally found love; her
light blonde hair left open and naturally wavy now, indicative of the long
journey she has been on and at last found peace.
W
e all have those moments where we want to look like our beloved stars from the movies; a
gorgeous body, fabulous clothes and most importantly, the perfect hair. Much has been said
about the role costumes play in building an on-screen character, but how much do their
hairstyles speak for the characters they portray?
WILD
Reese Witherspoon’s award-
winning performance of a woman
who embarks on a solo trek across
the Pacific Crest Trail.
As the protagonist takes on an
adventure, the most important
thing to note here is she has
a very practical hairstyle.
Witherspoon’s naturally
blonde hair fall straight and is
made to appear deliberately
un-styled. A simple centre-
parting and shoulder length
hair speaks for the character’s
lack of interest in vanity. Her
hair stays the same through
the movie, untouched and
overlooked, bringing out the
character’s single-minded
focus towards her goal.

Presenting to you all that this

Tell us something about your
journey with Wella
Professionals.
I started my career in 1992. I come
from a family of hairdressers.
My mom was a hairdresser but
I never wanted to get into the
same profession. However, I was
inspired by a Wella Professionals
seminar that I attended. I started
as a trainer in 1992 at the Wella
Studio in Darmstadt, Germany.
From there, I went on to being the
studio manager and then to the
post of team leader for System

I am the Global Capability Trainer

We worked on the principle difference
between shine and light reflection,
and the philosophy that colour comes
from within.
What makes Illumina Color
stand out among competitors?
Do tell us about the product.
I think it’s the biggest innovation in
colour in the last 20 years. It provides
outstanding protection and luminous
shine. The end of the strands will have
the same reflection as your roots as
though recreating the natural hair.
What has been your biggest
source of inspiration in this
field?
Vidal Sasson has been a major
influencer in my life and still is; I really
admire their quality of bringing the
design element to hair. It’s all about
precision and placement.
Do share a message for the
readers.
It’s important for them to know that
the world of colour is a never ending
story. Every colourist should be open to
accept that there is always more that
exists and there is a need to innovate
constantly. They should try to judge
not only from their own perspective
but also evaluate all the possibilities
from a consumers’ perspective.

mane
perfected!
W
e look forward to monsoons
because, let’s face it, summer is
never a preferred season. And yet,
those cool showers bring their
own hairmares—humid, frizzy, dull and sticky
hair! Not to mention the universal issue—hair
breakage. No wonder we hide our hair in buns
and ponytails and avoid glamorous styles. A lot
of us go overboard with hair products in the
monsoons and end up doing more harm than
good.
Every mane is unique and has its own unique
response to the season. Porous hair retains the
volume but puffs up extravagantly, while wavy
hair gets frizzy, curls lose their definition and
long, silky hair may go limp and dull. What we
need to do, is use the right product for right
monsoon hairmare. Here’s putting an end to your
monsoon tress-stress!

TO GIVE IT A
SLEEK FINISH!
All those monsoon parties
are quite a must and of
course you will rock them
with perfect hair. But be
wary of the after party
hair effects due to product
overload and overstyling—
dryness is one of the major
side-effects. The TIGI
Bed Head After Party,
is formulated with high
performance ingredients,
which could be used on
both wet or dry hair and also before a
blow-dry. This lightweight smoothing
cream that controls frizz and flyaway
hair helps attain a sleek and shiny look
all day, every day.
GO FROM FRIZZY TO
FLAWLESS IN A JIFFY!
This is the season when the silkiest of mane gets
frizzy and the curly ones lose all definition and
control. The dreaded monsoon hairmare is your
puffed-up frizzy hair. A long mane that is frizz
ridden or a a set of tied up shabby curls may put
a crimp on your look be it at work or a party. The
sole key to get such hair manageable is to add
moisture in the appropriate manner so your hair
does not feel the need to absorb the humidity
from the air. The TIGI Bed Head Control Freak
Serum, which is to be used only on wet or towel
dried hair, helps fight the frizz and stomp the
curl by smoothing the cuticles. Since it has heat
protection, you can air-dry or blow-dry your
mane to a smooth, silky and glossy finish.

A PERFECT MANE NEEDS
A CLEAN SCALP!
Slicked down wet hair may look sexy, but the truth is
that constantly getting drenched in the rains increas-
es the level of humidity, which is bad for your mane.
Excessive sebum can clog your roots and follicles,
leading to flakes alog with dull and limp hair. Dan-
druff and itching are the major culprits this season
when it comes to those less-than-perfect manes. Try
the TIGI Bed Head Recharge Shampoo and Condi-
tioner duo which is loaded with anti-oxidants—the
clarifying shampoo removes pollutants, sweat and
build up and the super-charged conditioner adds
nourishment to reveal a dazzling and reflective shine.
This duo will keep the scalp in a good condition but
will also prevent itchiness and flakes.

You walk out of the salon
with a stunning, vibrant
colour and want it to
stay like that until your
next pampering session,
but as a matter of fact,
it is not truly possible
for this wonderful colour
to stay for long due to
the humidity during the
monsoon season. Excess shampooing and hairstyling in
the monsoons can fade the colour off. To avoid this, use
the perfect cleansing and conditioning duo designed
specifically for coloured hair—TIGI Bed Head Colour
Goddess Shampoo; it not only shields from untimely colour
loss but also removes build up to optimise colour vibrancy.
The Colour Goddess Conditioner helps condition your
coloured hair so that your colour is protected and shinnier

Everyone’s talking about...
Wet it!The Spring 2015 runways from Paris to Mumbai had
one trend in common:
The Wet Look!
From full-on slick hair to slicked down pieces along the
hairline, like at Christopher Kane, the wet hair look was
seen at DKNY, Prada, Stella McCartney shows as well
as our very own Indian fashion week this spring.
L’Oréal Professionnel has created Extreme Splash by
Tecni.ART— an elastic-hold, wet look gelée for an ultra-
sleek, yet supple and long-lasting effect in resonation
to the explosion of wet looks on runways and red
carpets. This revolutionary product has a mix of high-
fixing, texturising polymers and glycerin. It can be used
on dry or damp hair to create a variety of wet looks.
Hollywood star Eva Green, who is the new
international spokesperson for L’Oréal Professionnel
sports a high glam, dual-texture wet look with a rock
twist that you can recreate by following the steps
given below!
1) Create a voluminous quiff by backcombing the hair
at the root area on the crown, using a fine-toothed
comb. Fix it with L’oreal Professionnel Infinium.
Secure the sections with pins on both sides.
2) Slick back the sides with L’Oréal Professionnel
Extreme Splash by Tecni.ART. Apply it evenly from
the roots to the ends.
3) Apply L’Oréal Professionnel Crystal Gloss by Tecni.

We would love to know about your education
and experience in hairstyling and hairdressing.
I have earned my Masters degree in hairdressing from
Pivot Point Chicago, and even worked there. I have
worked with some of the best in the industry from all
over the world.
How did the decision to re-launch the
Intercoiffure Mondial (ICD) India chapter come
about and how did you make it happen?
In India, we have both commercial and fashion fantasy
hair designing styles. ICD provides a common platform
for all the experts, making it possible for passion to
meet profession. ICD provides an opportunity to
know about world fashion and hairstyling trends,
including commercial trends. Thus, reaching out to the
International ICD body with conviction was smoother.
Let’s talk about the Bangalore show where
you first presented the ICD. Do you feel your
vision and goals for the show were well
executed?
Yes, definitely. The Bangalore show was very well
executed. As the first of the four chapters of ICD
India, it felt amazing reaching out to hairdressers of
South India. It is important to note that we have
some of the best hairdressers from South India as
ICD India members.
ToParis, withLoveBlossom Kochhar, President of Intercoiffure Mondial India and
Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies, speaks with
SHEFALI SAMDRIA about her latest international milestone.
At the Kolkata show, you delivered a talk on
Aromatherapy. Do share key points from the talk
with us.
The Kolkata event was attended by leading salon
professionals and skin experts of North-East and the Eastern
region. I did a demonstration of our newly launched Blossom
Kochhar Aroma Magic Jewel Facial Kit. A little talk was also
delivered on our Help Me Range of curative oils which are a
blend of essential oils and are a one-stop solution for some
of the major problems one might face in day to day life.
You are really taking the Indian chapter of ICD to
great heights with the General Congress. Can you
share the highlights of the event?
The highlights of the event are essentially that it provides a
world platform to young, talented Indian hairdressers who
can not only learn and enhance their skills by being a part
of this elite club but will also be in a position to share their
knowledge and talent in the world hairdressing industry.
What would you say to the hair and beauty
professionals who are interested in being a part of
the ICD?
It is one of the best organisations to be a part of. They help in
hairstyling and designing trends which include both fashion
and commercial styling; you become a class above the rest
and become a part of the crème de la crème of the industry.
It also provides you with the necessary education.

Who?
Salonie Muralidhara

The reason...
“I’ve had the same
years. It was time to
spruce things up a little.”
Casual Charm
As Salonie was not keen on
going in for a bold hair colour,
Meitei opted to colour her
tresses in settled shades of
brown that complemented her
skin-tone perfectly. Though she
had long, thick hair, they were
slightly limp and so, he added
layers to give her hair the much
needed bounce and volume,
adding a fringe as well. For a
casual day look, he blow-dried
her hair using a diffuser, curling
the ends outwards that framed
her face beautifully. A gentle
spritz of hairspray ensured that
the style stayed in place.
Make-up
Fresh, clean and soft, the day look
is perfect for a brunch outing or
even a day at the office. The
make-up is minimal; with coral lips
and thin, winged tip liner for the
eyes. A swipe of some cream blush
on the apples of the cheeks and
she’s good to go.

Glam Goddess
For an evening look, Meitei chose to transform Salonie
into a glam goddess. Starting off by working some
mousse into her hair, he blast-dried her hair. He added
some sea-salt spray to her hair section by section, curling
each section away from the face as he proceeded. He
pinned her hair to one side, brushing the curls out slightly
and finishing off with hairspray to hold the style in place.
A dash of red lipstick and winged liner were the perfect
additions to complete this look.

QI battle excessively limp tresses
in the monsoon. Is there any
solution for this?
~ Nitanshi
A Try to prevent tangles and wet,
messy hair. Avoid hairstyles that
require your hair to be straightened
or curled since high levels of humidity
in the air will make the hair go limp.
Try not to use hairsprays and gels as
they can stick to the scalp and cause
dandruff. Drying hair properly can
help minimise hair damage.
Remember, do not leave your hair
wet nor tie it while it is still wet.
QHow do I prevent male pattern
baldness? Also, can it be possible
to regain hair after this?
~ Mayur
A Male Pattern Thinning (MPT) or
Androgenetic Alopecia is an
irreversible, progressive disorder.
Over the years, stress has been
considered to be the most important
cause for MPT, along with poor
nutrition, unhealthy lifestyle, etc. It
happens because of the action of the
male hormones on the hair, hence the
anti-male hormones or DHT blockers
are prescribed to control MPT. In the
natural form, these are available in

food supplements as green tea and

blockers will only slow down the
process of thinning and not stop

lost hair is difficult, you may opt for

My receding hairline is worrying me.

A When the oestrogen level falls,
androgen starts attacking the hair
follicles and as the hair follicles are
destroyed, hair starts to thin. Natural
treatments are always best way to
deal with this. Dong Quai Complex,
made from a plant called Dong Quai
and mega femme (both have natural
oestrogen), has shown great results
when hair thinning is due to low
oestrogen levels. High androgen
levels can be treated by Serenoa
Complex (composed of Saw
Palmetto fruit and a stem called
Horsetail). Of course, it is best to
get your condition and its cause
accurately diagnosed through a
tricho-check with your trichologist.
There are some foods which have
great oestrogenic properties and
form a great support system to the
treatments which include the likes
of walnuts, soya, flax seeds and
green tea.

We Recommend: A sleek, high ponytail will

Think international hair couture, think Diva Poulos! HENA DESAI talks to the Sebastian
International Design Artist who shares her experience in this industry with us.
F
rom the red carpets to runways, Diva Poulos
has made her mark on these through the power
of phenomenal hairdressing! She is known for
being a stylist for celebrities both, on and off the
red carpet, making her a Hollywood favourite.
A master of her craft in its true sense, her creativity,
innovative edge and expertise, along with her passion
for this art truly makes her stand out from the crowd. A
Sebastian International Design Artist and Creative Director
of Diva International, we present to you our conversation
with the passionate and fearless Diva Poulos.
You live by the philosophy that hairdressing is an
art; what is that you look at differently when it
comes to hair?
It is an art. You have to look at each person sitting on the
salon chair differently.
When did you realize that you wanted to be a
hairdresser?
Soon after high school, I was interested in this profession. I
attended beauty college, after which I had the opportunity
to train and work at Vidal Sassoon.
Please tell us something about your journey with
Sebastian Professional, how it started and
evolved.
I started my journey with Sebastian Professional, coming
from the house of Wella Professionals, with their founders—
Geri and John. I started on a national level and
then proceeded to international. I have
been associated with the brand for over
20 years now.
45. What is the most challenging aspect
of this profession?
I would say that it is difficult critique on
myself. It is also hard to stay motivated.
How important it is to lay emphasis on
training when it comes to hairstyling?
I feel that training is the most important part
of hairstyling. As trends keep changing every
season or every year, it is very important to
keep up with the newer styles and trends.
According to you, what makes a good
hairstylist?
A good hairstylist is someone who is willing
to learn and is open to feedback and
suggestions.
What are the five things nobody tells
you about the field of hairdressing?
• You have to be open to feedback
• You must be willing to work for long hours
• Don’t expect to make a lot of money in
the beginning
• You have the freedom to wear anything
you want
• You will have opportunities to travel all
around the world
What would you say has been the
highlight of your career?
To sum it up in a line, the opportunity to be
able to travel all over the world and inspire
different countries has been the key highlight
for me.
What is the styling scene like in India?
I think it is very strong. Women in India
spend more time in the salon and
experiment with their hair a lot more than
women in the U.S.
What’s the one piece of advice that
you would share with the newbie as
he/she gears up to enter the world of
hairstyling?
You must have a lot of patience if you wish
to sustain yourself in this field. Don’t burn out
and keep it balanced.
in the spotlight
Which are your favourite
hairstyling products that you
absolutely cannot do without?
Those would be the Sebastian
Professional Texture maker and the
Sebastian Professional Mousse

The Sebastian Professional
Mousse Forte is a strong-hold
mousse with heat-resistant
activators and UV protection, which
will whip sinfully strong, long-lasting

Cutting it right!SHEFALI SAMDRIA presents three haircuts that meet the brief for the season.
So spake the indomitable Coco Chanel, and I agree whole heartedly. A simple haircut goes a long
way in giving a new lease of life and energy to our personality and attitude. How long and how
distinctly we wear our hair speaks volumes about our confidence and lifestyle and vice versa. Over
centuries, hairstyles went from long to short to coiffed to reflect the personal and cultural realities
of the time. Today, women and men are free to wear their hair as an extension of their individuality
and personality, empowering them through their self-expression. With this in mind, I bring you
three haircuts specially developed for Indian women by Scott Healey and Stewart Harland of Saks

CUT: This look has been created by maintaining the length onto

This style is perfect for Indian hair, irrespective of texture and
easy to style.
COLOUR: This style is all about sophisticated colour. An all-
over transparent colour effect starts with shimmering coffee
brunettes on the root area, muted copper and toffee tones to
catch the sun and dance in the light before dancing into soft
caramel. The light honey ends give this look the polished edge.
STYLING: Premier glamour is all about being different through
styling, while maintaining a classy edge. This look can be worn
up or down, straight or curly, this versatile haircut allows to
transform your look as you move from day to day. However, this
look has its maximum impact when hair is left loose and flowing.
Therefore, while a smoothening serum is a must, a blow-dry can
add oodles of glamour to this simple style.

afraid to stand out.
KEYWORDS: Edgy, sharp layers,
bold colour.
MUSE: Jennifer Lawrence
CUT: This look needs pioneering
cutting techniques to mimic the
pixie seen on the red carpets and
runways across the world. Slice
cutting and removing the weight
from the hair allows this style to be
fluid and diverse!
COLOUR: Cleverly placed
foils work in harmony with the
chopped tresses. Only four foils
are employed to lighten the hair
and allow brilliant burgundy
shades to shimmer in this haircut.
However, this cut lends itself
brilliantly to bright saffron colours
and dance with the cooler tones
that accentuate its individual spirit.
STYLING: This look is raw and
needs styling products. You can
wear your hair sleek at work, or
scrunch play with the style to
make this look work. It’s all about
thinking outside the box and being
individualistic. Accessories like
bands and clips add a more softer,
feminine dimension to the look
and balance its edginess!

the hot towel around the head like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat
the hot towel wrap three or four times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the
oil better. Leave the oil on overnight. Next morning, apply lemon juice on the
scalp and wash your hair after leaving it on for 20 minutes.
An issue we all battle with when the humidity is high is limp hair. To combat
this, applying essential oils may help. Add ten drops of rosemary essential oil
to 100 ml water. Shake well and keep in an airtight bottle. Apply this on the hair
after you shampoo and leave it on. Five drops of tea tree oil can be added to a
mug of water and used as a last rinse.
Shampoo the hair more frequently during the monsoons. Use less shampoo
and rinse well with water. You can opt for a tea and lemon rinse for silky and
shiny hair. For this, take used tea leaves and boil them in four to five cups of
water. The amount of water depends on the length of the hair. Strain and cool
the water. Add lemon juice and use as a final rinse after shampoo. To add shine,
you can also whisk an egg, add lemon juice to it and apply this mixture to the
hair, leaving it on for half an hour before you shampoo it all out.

up of a protein matter called keratin so ensure a rich in
protein diet. A balanced, nutritious diet helps hair grow,
since the hair is actually fed by the nutrients in the blood
stream. Include lean meats, fish, egg, dal, beans, fruits,
sprouts, vegetables and whole grains. Consult your
doctor before making changes in the diet. Vitamin C,
Zinc, Omega 3 fatty acids are all necessary for healthy
hair growth. Vitamin C is available in oranges, lemons,
tomato, papaya, grapefruit, cabbage and cauliflower. Zinc
is plentiful in seafish, mushrooms, green leafy vegetables
and wholegrain cereals. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential
fatty acids, available in fish, plant, nut oils and seaweeds.
Cut down on aerated drinks, fried foods and junk that
contains too much salt and sugar. Consume a small bowl
of sprouts daily; sprouts contain amino acids, which are
very beneficial to the hair. Include fresh fruits, raw salads,
leafy green vegetables, whole grains and curd in the daily
diet. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily as well as
freshly extracted juices of fruits and vegetables, adding
enough water to them. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass
of water and have it first thing in the morning. Ask your
doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements. Dull,
lifeless hair can signify a poor diet, so be sure to maintain a
healthy diet this season.
Another problem is that of bad scalp odour during the
humid season. To combat this, wash your hair at least four
times a week. For a fragrant hair rinse, add some lemon
juice and half a cup of rose water to a mug of water. Use this
as a last rinse after shampooing the hair.
A non-oily herbal hair tonic should be applied daily to keep
hair loss in check. Since stress can also aggravate hair loss,
try not to stress as much. Yoga exercises and relaxation
techniques help reduce stress and thus control hair loss.
Clinical treatments are also available to create a germicidal
environment and stimulate the follicles.
As nutritional deficiency is one of the most common
causes of hair loss, the diet is very important. Hair is made

extensionsThey’re the perfect way to add volume,

Clip-in calamities!
QI like to wear clip-ins on a
night out, but my mid-length
hair has been trimmed quite bluntly
recently. When I put my clip-ins
in now there’s a really obvious
difference between my hair and
the extensions. What’s the best
style to wear to make them look
less noticeable?
A The best-looking extensions blend
seamlessly with your natural hair, which
can be hard when it’s freshly-trimmed,
especially if you don’t have layers. The
best way to hide the different lengths
is to curl your hair and create texture.
Try taking small sections of your own
hair mixed with a section of the clip-
in and wrap around a curling wand.
When you’ve finished, either set with
a spritz of hairspray for a polished
look, or some texturiser for a more
casual style. Setting hair into curls with
the extensions will help disguise the
obvious line where your hair stops and
your faux locks begin!

Micro-ring ’mares!
QThe micro-rings in my extensions
slide down my hair shaft really
easily and I have to have them moved
up often. I’ve just been treating them
in the same way as my natural hair –
what can I do to prevent it?
A You definitely need to be more gentle
with your extensions. As these types of
extensions are clamped onto your natural
hair, you not only risk them sliding down,
but also pulling your hair from the root and
breaking. Ensure that when you brush or
comb you detangle from the ends, holding
the lengths of the hair and then working
your way up the hair shaft– this ensures
minimum damage and will help prolong the
life of your extensions.
Pre-taped problems!
QI want to get extensions and I’ve
heard that pre-taped ones are
good, but I don’t like the idea of gluing
my hair – will they damage my hair
beyond repair?
A No, not with the right TLC. The adhesive
used on pre-taped extensions is essentially
a strong double-sided tape to sandwich
the extension between two thin sections
of your natural hair. You should, as with all
types of extensions, give your hair a break
between reapplication to give it the best
chance at avoiding breakage.
Weave woes
QFor the first couple of days after
I’ve had my weave sewn in,
the scalp around the cornrow is
extremely tender and painful. It does
loosen up after a couple of days but is
there anything I can do to prevent the
initial soreness?
A If you have a sensitive scalp and it’s being
pulled tightly, irritation is bound to occur.
Try using a scalp tonic for relief and wash
with a specialist scalp shampoo that is
designed to soothe.
Supercuts
Bond bother
QMy best friend recently had cold fusion extensions put in
and they look fab! But I’m unsure about the process. I don’t
understand how they stay in if they aren’t glued or clamped?
A Cold fusion is a popular process in the hair extensions world. Instead of
hot glue, the extensions are attached with a keratin-based adhesive that is
pliable until it’s hardened and crystallised by vibrations. Many people are
fans of this method as it can be applied closer to the scalp than the hot
fusion offering.

Where does the
hair come from? How is hair for extensions sourced? Read on to find out.
The best quality hair typically comes from Asian or Eastern
European countries where selling it is a good way to make
money. Women who choose to sell their hair often keep it
away from any contact with pollutants to ensure it stays in
premium condition. When the time comes, the hair is then
shaved off completely, and the women begin the growing
process again. This may seem like a an ordeal, but for many
of these women it is the easiest and most effective way of
providing an income.
However, in such countries some hair is donated without
the women receiving financial compensation. In a day, some
regions of India can see up to 4,000 female Hindu pilgrims
visiting certain temples to take part in a religious ceremony
called tonsuring, during which they shave off their hair as a
sacrifice to the god Vishnu. Taking part in the ceremony is a
symbol that these women are willing to give up their pride
and vanity and wish to thank the gods or ask them for health
and happiness in the future. Following the donation, the hair
is tied into a ponytail to remain remi (meaning the cuticle
stays intact).
Once the hair is selected, it is then normally processed
at a factory, where it is cleaned before the natural colour
pigments are removed and replaced with artificial colour to
create the extensions’ desired base shades. Some brands
use what is called the “osmosis treatment” process, which
was originally pioneered for the cashmere industry so
colour could be removed in a gentle way without affecting
the material. Such care is also taken with hair extensions,
meaning that some colours can take up to six weeks to
process. Keratin can also be applied to reinforce the hair and
make it stronger.
Words from the experts…
“
Some hair extensions brands also go as far as using
unethical hair which is sourced from unidentifiable
origins. At Inanch, we exclusively utilise temple hair.
The temples then sell the hair to raise funds for their
upkeep, community projects and charitable schemes.
Indian hair is the finest quality for us to work with –
this is because it has not been chemically treated and
its structure is the most suitable for European women.
Our hair selection process (carried out in India) is quite
time-consuming but essential as each bundle of hair is
hand-picked and checked for its condition, which must be
healthy and strong (using our hair elasticity test). It must
also be virgin hair (not prone to any chemical treatments
such as colouring).” – Inanch Emir
“
Our human hair is sourced exclusively in China and is
gathered from a reliable salon network. These salons
have been collecting and providing hair to Balmain
Hair for over 30 years. In China, the selling of one’s hair is
both a cultural and economic choice. Culturally, Chinese
women will go to the salon to have their hair cut at
significant points in their lives such as marriage, the birth
of a child or completion of education, and this practice has
been going on for centuries. When they choose to make
this cultural statement, it is also recognised that they will
benefit financially from their decision to sell their hair. The
hair is then processed in China to achieve the high quality
product for use in our extensions. The sourcing and control
is entirely in the hands of Balmain Hair, therefore we can
guarantee the source and the quality of our extensions for
up to six months.” – Balmain

91. talk of the town
Tell us something about your modeling
days and your venture into the world
of cinema.
I started dreaming about this journey since
a very young age. As a kid, I always was
inclined towards extra-curricular activities, be
it dancing, singing, sports or acting. It was
my mother who pushed me towards my first
pageant; I went on to win many later. That’s
how I began my journey in modeling and
luckily, I never looked back. Immediately after
my last pageant, the Femina Miss India 2014, I
got a call for the screen test of my first movie
Nee-Na and the rest is history!
Do share a memorable highlight of
your career.
The most recent one occurred when I
watched my movie with the local audiences.
At the end of the movie, I got a standing
ovation. It was such an emotional moment!
What does beauty mean to you?
To me, beauty is something that reflects your
inner self. It is how you feel about yourself
and deal with others. And as is said, your face
is the reflection of your soul. If your soul is
beautiful, so are you.
Being in the limelight, do you feel
pressurised to look perfect at all times?
Well, I wouldn’t say perfect; it’s more about
being presentable. I’m sure every girl in this
field faces that pressure at times. We end up
having hectic schedules with minimal sleep
and sometimes we have to travel a lot. So yes,
that pressure is always there but as long as
we try to keep a stable, a relaxed mindset and
try to maintain good health, it’s all good!
Do share a message for our readers.
Beauty is always within you. The happiness
that is within must always radiate. Maintain a
good lifestyle and take life with a pinch of salt.
