Dear Reader,
Spring is the season of the fresh, the new
and the growing. This is the month when we
incorporate florals in our wardrobe to reflect
our alignment with the season, why shouldn’t
your hair join in then? I believe that it is never
too late to make a fresh start, especially when
it comes to your mane. Another facet of
spring is that it coincides with the wedding
season, a key driver for the salon and spa
industry.
The hairdressing industry is evolving at a
rapid pace which is evinced by the styles we witnessed at the Indian
Hairdressing Awards; the same have been showcased in our event watch
feature. It is the sheer talent and service offered by the hairdressing community
that is changing the way Indian brides look on their D-Day. From trousseau to
tresses, a ‘spring bride’ today is all about glowing skin and hair. To understand
this evolution we present a conversation with Pooja Singh, the Manager of
Education and Development at Matrix about their new Wedding collection
that changes the way a bride and her party approaches hairstyles for the
occasion. As you engage in a flurry of wedding festivities, whether as a guest or
bride you need to ensure your skin is smooth and pristine at all times. Dr.
Varun Katyal’s article on skin sensitivity will aid you tremendously.
Spring/Summer 2015 is all about being yourself and our Spring Look Book
and Beauty Bible features will be your best allies in doing just that. After all,
life is too short for compromises, be it your hair, beauty or career. We present
Nalini Naegamvala of Nalini and Yasmin as she shares her philanthropic
collaboration with the Shiksha initiative with us. Kingfisher Calendar girl
Keisha Lall, famous for her no-fuss style and work ethic and Ishika Taneja,
Guinness record holder are inspirations to all young girls. And for the men, we
present our Spring Fashion Fawn feature to help them nail this season in style.
For our loyal fans we have taken HAIR to digital platforms, so make sure

Planning the perfect vacation this holiday
season? Don’t let varying weather
conditions leave your hair in a fix! With
TIGI’s vacation hairstyling guide, you can
let your hair down wherever you go.

T
aming and styling one’s locks is a task, especially
when you’re travelling. Packing is thus pivotal,
not just for your clothes but for hair as well. Trust
TIGI to create the perfect guide that helps you in
selecting a bag full of essential haircare products for travel,
as suggested by professional TIGI educators. So whether
it’s a beach, street or someplace exotic, use this guide to
create the most stylish vacation packing list and flaunt
luscious hair for any destination.
Sun-kissed sand at ones feet and a cocktail in
hand calls for a perfect wavy hair do. For gorgeous
beachy waves, use a BED HEAD -TOTALLY BAKED
as a prepping lotion for a long lasting hold, volume
and texture. Finish it off with a touch of BED HEAD
SUGAR SHOCK. The BED HEAD DUMB BLONDE
SMOOTHENING STUFF will help protect your hair
from humidity and UV rays on the beach. The BED
HEAD DUMB BLONDE SMOOTHENING STUFF
has to be applied on damp, wet or dry hair in small
quantities to help keep the sand out. To give your
hair the required boost of energy, use the BED HEAD
RECHARGE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER. This
will not only recharge your hair but also keep the
beach humidity at bay.
If you are travelling to
a camping destination
in the midst of a lush
forest surrounded by
the beauty of nature, it
would be really difficult to
follow an appropriate hair
maintenance regime. In this
case, the BED HEAD DIRTY
SECRET DRY SHAMPOO
will help you keep the hair clean and oil free. To
maintain the shine, BED HEAD AFTER PARTY would
work wonders as it helps in keeping the
frizz away.

quick fix
With the wind and sand
blowing into your hair, it
can be difficult to keep
the tresses calm! When
you don’t have the luxury
of a hair wash, the BED
HEAD ROCKAHOLIC
DIRTY SECRETS DRY
SHAMPOO is a good
option for the roots. Moreover, for the ends, you could
consider using the BED HEAD AFTER PARTY. For other
occasions, the BED HEAD RECHARGE SHAMPOO AND
CONDITIONER could be used to cleanse and deep
condition the hair. Men can try the B FOR MEN CLEAN
UP SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER for a fresh feeling,
clean scalp.
Vacationing in a snow-clad region sounds
exciting. However, hair care becomes a
serious issue. Cold and dry weather often
lead to frizzy hair. To combat this, use the
BED HEAD CONTROL FREAK SERUM
which fights frizz well. The BED HEAD
MANIPULATOR will help texturizing
your hair while keeping it soft. Since you
would not want to wash your hair every
day, using the BED HEAD ROCKAHOLIC
DIRTY SECRETS DRY SHAMPOO to
help keep the scalp clean. Moreover,
the BED HEAD SUGAR DUST will help
add volume and absorb excess oil from
the scalp, thus keeping the hair feeling
moisturised and nourished.
Backpacking in hills can be fun, but when you’re exposed to
the outdoors for most of the time, you’re left with little time to
worry about your hair. BED HEAD EGO BOOST will help you
condition and nourish your hair in such extreme conditions.
You could also try the BED HEAD SPOIL ME HAIR SPRAY.
This spray will not only keep your hair fresh, but also help
keep the moisture intact.

ndian women are blessed with
naturally dark locks, of which others
are envious world over. No matter
how hard you try to take care,
pollution, exposure to the sun and
humidity take a toll on them, stripping
them off their natural sheen. Even if
you have opted to undergo a dark
colouration service, the colour is prone
to fading. To help you combat tired-
looking, dull hair, Matrix has launched
the Opti.black range, specially designed
to protect your dark coloured hair while
giving it intense shine.
Enriched with antioxidant vitamin E, the
Opti.black Dazzling Shine Professional
hair care range vitalises your hair, infusing
it with an enviable shine. The homecare
range comprises of the Professional
Shine Enhance Shampoo, Conditioner
and Serum; the special formula
conditions and smoothens your mane.
They also offer in-salon treatments- the
Supreme Shine and Protect Blackspa
and the Mirror Shine Blackspa, which you
can avail at any Matrix Professional Salon.
The former is specially recommended
for hair that has undergone a colouration
service with any dark shade, protecting
your coloured mane against fading for
upto 24 washes; the latter is for those
of you looking for high intensity mirror
shine through the lengths of your natural,
dark hair.

25. L
ike many others, I was battling
lacklustre and tired tresses too
and so, I decided to try the
Matrix Opti.black range.
At the Matrix Education studio, I was
greeted by Matrix expert Mr. Faiyaz
Shaikh, who recommended the
Supreme Shine and Protect Blackspa
and I gratefully agreed. He began by
shampooing my hair with the Opti.
black Professional Shine Enhance
Shampoo. To my damp hair, he then
applied the Shine Enhance Booster
Dose and let it rest on my hair for five
minutes. Following this, he worked
the Professional Shine Enhance
Masque through my hair, from root
to tip. Faiyaz gently massaged my
head to improve circulation and to
maximise the benefits of the Masque.
The added pampering of a neck and
shoulder massage left me blissfully
relaxed. Since the treatment was
hot list
directed towards increasing shine, he
also massaged the lengths of my hair
thoroughly.
My hair was then rinsed to cleanse
it of the Booster Dose and Masque.
As the end of the service drew close,
I grew excited to see the final result.
Even before my hair was completely
dry, I could see a stark difference in
the appearance and feel of my hair.
My hair looked glossier, felt softer
and appeared healthier. Finally, as
my blow-dried and styled strands,
polished with the Professional Shine
Enhance Serum, fell over my shoulders,
I was pleased to the big difference
that the Supreme Shine and Protect
Blackspa had made; the compliments
that I received for my locks went on
to prove that my hair looked shinier,
softer and lustrous!
I was advised to include the
homecare range to my hair care
routine to help maintain the shine in
my naturally coloured dark hair. So,
without further ado, march on to a
Matrix salon near you and enjoy the
benefits of Opti.black so that you
can flaunt your glossy mane and
truly shine!

Colour me brideThe Indian woman is unafraid to shine
as a modern bride. SHEFALI SAMDRIA
speaks with Pooja Singh, Senior Manager,
Education and Development, Matrix
India, about their ode to the
modern Indian bride.
Q: Please share a bit about yourself and
your journey with L’Oréal India.
A: I have been with the L’oreal group for the
past 11 years. I started off as a technical trainer in
2004 and then went on to become a Regional
Manager in L’oreal Professionel. I moved to MATRIX
2 years ago as Senior Manager, Education and
Development.
Q: Tell us about your involvement in the
development of hair colour.
A: Hair colour is a very important category in the
professional space. My team is actively involved in
testing and giving feedback on all the new shade
developments that happen across the MATRIX
hair colour brands.
Q: How did the Bridal collection,
recently launched by Matrix, come
about?
A: For any young woman, her wedding
day is the most important day in her
life. This is the day she needs to look
and feel her absolute best! Today,
it’s not just the brides who look
for something special for their
D-Day, but also their families
and friends.Weddings in

the biggest business
drivers for salons

colour talk
during the wedding season.
Keeping these in mind, MATRIX
has designed a collection of looks
to depict the modern Indian Bride.
These looks involve colouring and
styling techniques that are both
contemporary and stylish!
Q: How is the Bridal collection
special in this saturated market?
A: Bridal hairstyling was previously
restricted to gorgeous hairstyles but
for the first time, we have introduced
colour with it! Gold, bronze,
chocolates and caramels are colours
that complement and harmonise
with our warm, Indian skin tones and
blend beautifully with the wedding
wardrobes and jewellery which tend
to be festive. The styling techniques
for each of these looks have been
created to bring alive the colors
in the hair and also give a modern
interpretation to a hitherto traditional
domain of doing up hair.
Q: How did this series of colours
come about?
A: The main criteria that drove the
choice of colors for each of these
looks were – shades that would
flatter the Indian skin tone & can be
worn not just on special occassions
but can also serve as everyday
wear. To achieve these looks, we
have worked with the SoColor 12
series – a series of shades that have
been specifically caliberated and pre
adjusted such that they can eliminate
the warm undertones and give
vibrant long lasting light brown colors.
Along with the 12 series, we have also
used gold shades like 6.35, as seen on
our brand ambassador Drashti Dhami
and Socolor shade 7.5 which is seen in
the Mocha Sidesweep look sported by
model Maria.
Q: What is the inspiration behind
this Bridal Collection ?
A: MATRIX has always sought to
bring to its clients looks, products
and services that are cutting edge
and modern. The bridal collection is
also an initiative in the same vein. The
main inspiration for this collection is
the young Indian bride of today who
is unafraid to to move away from the
‘done to death styles’ of the past and
is open to modern renditions of age
old styles.
Q: Please also share the creative
thought behind the Mahogany
Twist and Mocha Side Sweep
looks.
A: This collection also has something
for the pre-wedding functions.
Sangeet and Henna ceremonies are
quite a staple to the weddings today.
For the Henna ceremony which is
a fun, casual affair, we created the
Mahogany Twist look which is inspired
by the messy braid. We brought this
messy braid to life with an Ombré
technique that has light and dark
shades at the ends such that they
intertwine in the braid. As for the
Mocha Side Sweep, we have taken
the messy bun that is a perfect fit for
the Sangeet ceremony which needs a
balance between a formal and casual
approach. We have used a multi-
dimensional highlight in the model’s
hair using the 12 series for highlight and
7.5 series as the global colour through
the lengths of her hair. The messy bun
is positioned at the crown so that the
colour is visible all around.
Q: Please share a little about the
Caramel Chignon that Dashti
Dhami is flaunting.
A: The colour of the Caramel Chignon
is an interplay of light and dark shades
of caramel which pairs brilliantly
with ALL skin tones across the warm
spectrum. The technique used also
allows the level of colouration to
be adjusted as per skin tones for
personalisation and it’s done in a way
that the light and dark shades blend.
The inspiration behind the Caramel
Chignon was the traditional bun that
we have evolved into a side chignon,
which is structured and elegant, giving
more volume to the hair. This is a style
that is certainly very different from
what is normally seen while retaining
the traditional touch.
Q: When is the ideal time to
get this colour done before the
wedding and how can the bride
avail these hairstyles?
A: A week before the wedding is ideal
so that the bride can also indulge in a
Biolage Colorcaretherapie Spa service
to highlight her colour. These styles can
be availed at any of the MATRIX salons
across the country. Our hair stylists are
trained through our education studios,
in both the colour techniques as well
as the styling techniques.
Q: A lot of women, brides
particularly, avoid colouring their
hair; least of all before a wedding
due to the possibility of hair
damage. Your thoughts?
A: Always trust that the experts are
trained to enhance your hair’s beauty
and use techniques and technologies
that are designed to protect the hair
while coloring. A professional product
like MATRIX SoColor is designed to
protect the integrity of the hair fiber
with its 360 degree KeraProtect
technology during the coloration
process. Indulging in the Biolage
ColorCaretherapie Intense Condition
BioSpa would help the colour look
vibrant and last longer.

t was a night where talent and verve triumphed in spades.
Glorious colours, razor sharp styles and oodles of drama
were in store for me at the grand finale of the Indian
Hairdressing Awards. This is the new avatar of the Colour
Trophy, which is now bigger and better than ever! Held at
Grand Hyatt, Goa the awards are a L’Oréal Professionnel effort
to encourage and recognize Indian hairdressing talent through
a variety of awards. And as of 2015 they have also added the
‘Business awards’ to this property so as to recognize
and nurture salons who demonstrate excellence
in the business of hairdressing. Hosted by Shivani
Dandekar, the event saw 39 hairdressers showcase
their looks on their models for an audience of over
500 people. We present the professionals whose
creativity and business excellence won the hearts of
the judges and audience alike!

30. If you have the power to make a change, don’t let it go to waste. HENA DESAI
converses with Nalini Naegamvala, of the Nalini and Yasmin Salon fame, to
find out how she is doing just that.
Empowering
Through Beauty
March 201532
S
he has built herself a big name,
a brilliant career and today, she
empowers those who need and
deserve it. Over a cup of coffee
at her Bandra salon, Nalini shares that an
initiative like this was always a part of her
retirement plan. “Yasmin and I first started
the salon in 1978 and the two of us got busy
with the work pretty fast,’ she says. As work
poured in, they realised they could expand
their clientele by delegating smaller tasks
like blow-drying, styling, etc. to the girls who
shampooed the client’s hair at their salon.
Nalini remembers, “These girls were very
bright and enthusiastic to learn. Our training
gave them an opportunity to grow and also
helped us- we could take on more clients.”
These ‘shampoo girls’ were trained to become
assistants- and thus began the Assistant
Course. With experience, the girls moved on to
undertake hair colouring, perming and other
salon services. “There was nothing known as
assistants in India at that time. This is how the
career came into being,” says Nalini.
In her own small way, she has been helping
talented women from less privileged
backgrounds since nearly forty years. Their
stories are incredible; their individual journeys
took them from ‘shampoo girls’ to assistants
until eventually they were proficient enough
to open hairdressing salons of their own. “Any
human being, when given the chance and
adequate encouragement, can build their
life beautifully,” says Nalini. The training was
informal earlier; now, formal training through
their courses is a must if they wish to become
hairdressers and beauticians. The courses are
often expensive, making them a mere dream
for those with talent but no means. While she
has tried to help such people on her own, she

was beyond her means. She enrolled for Nalini’s

now an employee at the Nalini’s salon.

admits that it hasn’t always been
feasible. Fortunately, since 2014, the
Mumbai Chapter of the FICCI FLO
division has stepped up to support
her. “They are helping me create
the skill at a much cheaper rate
with the underprivileged course for
the assistants in hair, beauty or spa
training,” Nalini gushes. The course
fee for the underprivileged students
ranges from Rs. 7,500-10,000,
depending on their background.
However, if the students are unable
to find the funds for this too, FICCI
FLO steps in to help reduce the fees
further to a mere Rs. 2,500.
Following suit, Proctor & Gamble
(P&G) have come forward to support
her through their Shiksha initiative.
At the Academy, courses have
been designed to teach seven basic
haircuts that any Indian hairdresser
should learn, the course being priced
at Rs. 75,000. With the support
of P&G, this course has now been
made available at half the price (Rs.
37,500), with a further reduction to
Rs. 18,750 for the first eight students
who enrol. P&G enables Nalini to offer
these courses to the truly talented at
one-third the actual fee. For Nalini,
training is no longer about her own
academy; it’s a social cause. Since
receiving FICCI’s initial support, they
have trained 52 girls, giving them the
means to a better life. Nalini says, “Life
cannot be only about us; when you
see the life of another person with
absolutely no opening to get ahead,
you must try to help.” She is full of
stories about the girls she has trained;
having seen them leave behind their
past and bloom into confident young
girls with bright careers.
Nalini opines that India is full of
young people looking to hone their
skills, who she is eager to empower.
India, she says, is full of ‘barbers’,
and they can proceed to become
‘hairstylists’ with the help of such
courses. Barbers have come up to
her hoping to learn ladies hairdressing.
She quotes Vidal Sassoon who once
said, “Barbers become the best
hairdressers.” Once these barbers
have mastered the art of styling short
men’s hair, cutting women’s hair isn’t
a challenge for them; they just need
direction. They have the know-how
and the skill and Nalini is waiting to tap
into that section of the country with such
programs. Where they lack the finances,
Nalini, FICCI and Shiksha aid them.
For Nalini, the aim of this activity is job
creation for lower income groups; with
her experience and expertise, who better
to guide the newcomers? She urges her
contemporaries to help her in this cause
too. We at HAIR believe that many can
benefit from the support offered by FICCI
FLO, P&G and Nalini to build a better life
for themselves. We urge you to share this
article with those who are deserving but
lack the privilege; you may end up doing
more good than you imagine for them.

lightness at the lower ends and darker

which was bang on the brief as Nadia

60 minutes, including application.
Following the post-colour shampoo

QMy hair was healthy growing up
but post puberty, it has really lost

QI am a 25 year old man and I
noticed some grey strands. I don’t
have a family history of premature
greying and I am really worried. Is there
a medical treatment for this other than
colouring the grey?
~ Swapna
A Yes, check with your trichologist
for the percentage of graying, cause of
the complaint to avoid further graying.
L- tyrosine as a supplement is used as a
preventive therapy. Consult your doctor
for its usage. B complex also can be
given to improve its absorption.

and I am facing acute dandruff
at the scalp level so it is damaging
my hair from roots. I am also
suffering from premature greying
due to heredity. Please suggest
some natural remedies for the same.
~ Priyanka
A You need regular oiling and
shampooing thrice in a week for proper
conditioning of the scalp which will
reduce the dandruff. Have an iron rich
diet such as dates and figs with milk
and jaggery. Drink water stored in a
copper vessel. Apply Henna as a natural
pack to relieve dandruff.
QI am a 25 year old woman and I
have a family history of thyroid
and suffer from hair thinning and hair
loss. I have been undergoing therapy
for the thyroid but it has no effect on
my hair issues. Please help!
~ Kesha
A Even while your thyroid treatment
is going on, your hair requires special
care as mineral loss is easy for thyroid
patients. Dry and rough hair, thinning
of hair happens as a result of thyroid
hormone fluctuation. You can do
tricho scalp therapy for controlling
the hair fall and Anagrow plant stem
cell therapy for hair thinning.

EDITOR’S REVIEW
I have suffered from hair thinning
for a while now and was eager to
consult with a Nioxin professional
to understand how the range could
help me. I visited the Exquise salon,
Worli for a discussion with the Nioxin
expert, Harsh. I was given a scalp
analysis and it was here that I realised
the difference between hair thinning
and hair fall! Harsh explained the
science behind the Nioxin system;
how the accumulation of debris,
sebum deposits, dandruff and
pollutants make the scalp congested
and affect the diameter and density
of hair. Merely a cleaner and healthier
scalp can mean half the battle won!
I was persuaded to try the Nioxin
Scalp Renew Dermabrasion service
to fully test this theory and follow it
up with the Nioxin home care range.
A scalp facial is something I wouldn’t
ever have imagined. Harsh soothed
all my fears and his professional
touch was enough to convince me.
This service, available only through
authorized salons in India, is to
be performed by trained a Nioxin
professional only. The Scalp Renew
product is applied at the roots to
gently exfoliate the buildup at the
roots so as to revitalise them for
thicker hair. My hair is genetically thin
with mild hair loss and I have been
colouring it on and off. The Nioxin
range is formulated so as to give a
personalised post-Dermabrasion
home care to every individual. There
are three sub-types that take into
account hair texture, treatment
history and scalp condition. The
Dermabrasion or Derma Renew
treatment targets the scalp and roots
while the Density Repair and Density
Protect therapies tackle hair damage
and breakage respectively. Harsh
recommended the Dermabrasion
given that my thinning was a result
of a poor scalp environment rather
than shaft damage. The Scalp Renew
product was applied to the roots
of my entire hairline in sections and
spread throughout using a gentle
massage post which there was a 10-15
minute resting time. I was then treated
to the three-step Nioxin care routine.
CONCLUSION
At the end of this procedure, Harsh asked me to notice my scalp and
roots. My hair had a visible lift at the roots and even in its wet state
it looked and felt thicker and substantial than it usually does; I would
say a definite 40% increase in its thickness was evident to me. I was
provided the Nioxin system six kit for home care. Over the period of 2
weeks, my hair is visibly thicker, stronger and unexpectedly–smoother
and silkier! I had moderate hair fall while washing and I find that has
reduced by 50%. While Nioxin claims that 70% of its users experience
improvement in hair thickness over a month of usage, I can attest to
a 50% improvement for sure over the previous two weeks. All in all, I
honestly feel this is one product I will go back to for a thicker mane.
The Nioxin Cleanser helps to remove
follicle-clogging sebum, fatty acids
and environmental residues from the
scalp skin and hair to provide thicker-
looking hair. This was followed by the
Nioxin Scalp Revitaliser; a lightweight
conditioner which was applied to my
scalp and lengths evenly and sunk in
instantly leaving a refreshed feeling. The
third and final step was the Nioxin Scalp
Treatment, a leave-in spray foam that
instantly penetrated my hair and scalp
when applied. It contains antioxidants
and botanicals that help to provide a
refreshed scalp environment.

trick me
Here are some simple tricks that you need to know in
order to get your way to perfection. Read on, you can
thank us later.
HAIR HACKS FOR HAIRSTYLING
• Detangle your hair from the end to the roots, not root
to the ends, especially when applying conditioner
• Banish frizz from your hair by combing it along with a
bristle brush
• If you don’t have a curling iron, create instant wavy
curls by wrapping up your hair in your socks
• Before you start your fishtail braid, tie it in a ponytail to
keep it as tight as you can. Once you’re done braiding,
cut the hair tie to get that flawless braid
• To generate volume, stack your curls together on the
top of your head and coat the bottom with some
hairspray
• To get the perfect side-swept look, fix a portion of your
hair with a bobby pin
• For an instant party look, try the latest hair chalks
• For long lasting curls, running a flat iron through braids
will work wonders
• For fine curls, washing your hair with a hairnet on will
help to keep your curls intact
• While drying your curls, try using a diffuser instead of
a normal dryer as the diffuser will help to minimize the
frizz while evenly disturbing heat
• To prevent your curls from getting entangled, sleep on
a satin pillow as it will help keep them in place
• Use a toothbrush to tame fly away strands

THANK GOD FOR HAIR PINS!
Looking gorgeous without the help of
these bobby pins to style our hair would
have been so difficult. It’s time you knew
some untold and unheard facts about
bobby pins too!
HAIR HACKS ABOUT BOBBY PINS
• Spin pins will help keep a bun in
place better than bobby pins
• Make sticky bobby pins for super soft
hair. All you need are some bobby
pins, hairspray or dry shampoo and
napkin. Place the bobby pins in the
towel and spray some shampoo on
it. Hold the corners of the towel and
shake well such that the shampoo
gets equally distributed on each
bobby pin. Now, use the same bobby
pin for it to stay fixed on your soft
hair
• Store your bobby pins in an old Tic-
Tac container so that they are easily
accessible when needed
• Instead of hunting for a booby pin in
the colour you want, use nail varnish
to paint and customise them
Now that you know how to style
your hair, it’s time for hair brush
hacks! Here’s what you need to
know about your brushes.
• Large round brushes are a boon
for frizz-prone hair if you want
to make straighter
• Small round brushes are apt for
adding curls and volume while
paddle brushes are good for
smoothing
• Use a boar bristle brush to style
your hair instead of any anti-
frizz or shine treatment as it will
help spread the scalp oils down
the lengths of your hair
• Put a dryer sheet on your hair
brush to get rid of static
• Keep your brushes clean by
soaking them in warm water
and shampoo
Last but not the least, to style it right and use those brushes and
pins, what you need is healthy hair. With the summer starting now,
treat your hair to the following hacks to keep them gorgeous!
HAIR HACKS FOR HEALTHY HAIR
• Apply a hair product to your hair before you start working out
• A leave-in conditioner can prevent your hair from the sodium
in your perspiration that dehydrates your hair
• Vitamin B plays a crucial role in hair growth. Consume
meat and seafood to get long and healthy hair. As for the
vegetarians, you can opt for cheese or low fat dairy milk
• Apply a hydrating mask to your hair regularly, it will help to
protect against split ends
• Apply a coconut hair oil mask to your hair if you have very
dry hair- it makes your hair luscious and strong without
making it greasy
WRAPPING IT UP!
What may look professional might just be smart styling. Use
these hair hacks to a good effect and wow ‘em all with an
enviable mane!

Distinguish the hair myths from
the mantras
Hair ‘rules’ change over time, with some long-held mottos
being completely fabricated. Discuss your habits with
your hairdresser and refer to reliable sources (such as
magazine) to ensure that you are not being guided by
false information. Karine Jackson comments on one of the
biggest industry myths: “Don’t pay any attention to the old
100 strokes method from root to tip when brushing your
hair – it’s the worst way! Grab a detangling brush and start
brushing slowly and gently from the ends up to the roots for
minimum damage.”
Deal with split ends
A head full of split ends will ruin any cut, colour or style.
Constant picking at split ends and leaving too long between
trims are healthy hair enemies. “Leave your splits alone,” the
Aitch and Aitch Creative Team tells us: “One really bad habit
is to pick at split ends. The most sensible remedy and good
habit to form is to visit your stylist to get rid of the ends.
Make it a habit every six to eight weeks to just refresh that
cut and be stunning always!”
Breaking bad
Here are the real vices you need to ditch for great, healthy hair
according to the industry’s top hair experts.
FeatureSarahCohenImageEssentialLooks,SchwarzkopfProfessionalGlobalAmbassadorsTylerJohnstonandLesleyJennison
Don’t use heat without protecting your
locks first
“My main bugbear with styling hair is that girls do not use
heat protection products and wonder why their hair is
in such bad condition,” Ollie Blackaby, Headmasters Art
Ambassador states. “Conditioners are great at rehydrating
but are not a long-term solution. All major hair brands
have some form of a heat protector in a cream or spray. I
recommend a spray that isn’t too wet, as you can spray a
light mist every time you need to re-use your irons, and the
best part is that they actually work!”
Don’t neglect your bangs
“You need to keep an eye on the thickness of your fringe;
bangs can become too heavy as you either cut them
yourself, don’t visit your regular stylist or don’t keep an
eye on how thick they can get,” says Jonathan Soons,
Headmasters Creative Ambassador advises. “I’ve seen some
cases where the fringes are so thick that they have lost a lot
of the side of the hairstyle. The best way to maintain your
fringe is to take regular visits to your salon for fringe trims.
Make sure you are as regular as your stylist says you need
to be. After 10 weeks, it is important to condition well as
layering shapes become harder to recreate.”
Get out of your colour rut
Siobhan Jones, Headmasters Colour Ambassador
recommends creating a colour plan with your colourist
to ensure that your tresses don’t suffer due to too much
build-up. “A bad habit for colour is having the exact same
technique and placement every service because colour
can build up very easily. If the same colour is applied
continuously on the same strand of hair every single time
it will not only unnecessarily damage and dry out the hair,
but will start to look unnatural and give you a regrowth
that will become more obvious very quickly. Opt to make a
hair colour plan with your colourist and map out the steps
to ensure your colour looks natural and low maintenance
without the damage.”
Keep your hands off!
Like hands all over a made-up face, constant touching can
ruin the most relaxed of hairstyles, as Ken Picton describes:
“Idle hands lead to many people twisting their locks
and running their fingers up and down the twist – it’s so
damaging to the hair and will aid split ends. If do you find
yourself with restless fingers, invest in a stress ball – your hair
will thank you for it!”
Don’t skimp on the essentials
Conditioner, heat protector and the right brushes are all tools
you NEED to have in your hair kit. “If you haven’t already,
invest in a product right away. We also suggest trying a deep
conditioning treatment to take care of dry tresses and keep
them well hydrated.

Capture the
spring/summer ’15 trends
Use these simple steps to create two of spring’s hottest looks!
how to… do the statement volume look
STEP 1: Apply a lift spray at the roots,
using the blow-dryer without the
nozzle, start to dry with your fingers,
lifting the hair and directing the
airflow into the root area.
STEP 2: With the nozzle back on, use
a ceramic vented brush and direct
the airflow from the roots to ends.
Roll the hair around the brush back
towards the head, heating the hair
as you roll. Use the cold shot button
to set before unwrapping the hair,
back-brushing lightly at the root
and wrapping into a barrel curl and
pinning up.
STEP 3: Take vertical sections,
directing the heat away from the
face. Repeat the previous step
to complete the sides and back of
the head, wrapping and pinning
each section.
STEP 4: Taking horizontal sections
back to the crown, elevate each
section vertically and direct the
nozzle into the root area for
extra lift.
STEP 5: Unpin
each section and
gently tease the
hair at the root
before spritzing
with hairspray.
Shake the style
out with your
hands then use
your fingers to
dress it out
to your
desired finish.

how to… do the ultimate sleek look
STEP 2: Take diagonal subsections starting at
the nape and apply a heat protect spray to each,
distributing evenly from roots to ends.
STEP 3: Hold each subsection at 90 degrees from
the head and place a natural bristle brush at the
roots before pulling straight with your thumb on
the hair to add tension.
STEP 4: Place your straightening iron at the root
behind the brush while maintaining the 90 degree
angle. Gently close the styler and smooth from the
roots to ends, following the brush with the styler.
STEP 5: To add extra shape and lift
from the crown, bevel the roots at the
top using the bottom plate, rotating
back and forth to achieve extra root lift.
STEP 6: To finish, use an oval dressing brush and brush from
root to tip for amazing shine.
STEP 1: Blow-dry the hair until completely dry.
Then split it into two panels from front to nape.
Sharpen your parting with a tail comb.

There’s something
Does your hair behave differently when you spend a night at
a hotel or go swimming abroad? You’re not alone! It’s all down
to the H2
O.
WHAT CAUSES HARD WATER?
Hard water is water that has a high mineral content (as
compared with soft water). Hard water is formed when
water has been filtered through deposits of calcium and
magnesium-containing minerals such as limestone, chalk
and dolomite. This also gives it a slightly unpleasant taste for
drinking.
HOW CAN IT AFFECT MY HAIR?
With hard water, soap solutions can form a scum instead of
a lather, which can greatly affect how your shampoo foams
up. This can mean lank locks for those with oily hair and
scalp. It can also be very drying and zap moisture and colour
molecules from your mane, meaning you need to colour and
moisturise more often.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
• Invest in a high quality clarifying shampoo, which will
contain a higher amount of foaming agent than a regular
shampoo. If you find that shampoos for oily hair strip your
locks too much, wash first with a little clarifying shampoo
and then lather up for a second time with your usual
moisturising cleanser.
• Make a lemon rinse with one tablespoon of lemon juice to
three cups of water. Mix and apply this rinse to
your hair after shampooing to add shine.
• Use a leave-in conditioner after shampooing
to combat excess dryness.
WHAT CAUSES SOFT WATER?
Soft water has had hard water elements such as calcium
and magnesium removed. The resulting soft water is more
compatible with soap, making it easier to produce a lather
with foaming products. Soft water is also typically higher in
sodium. It can feel nice to bathe in, but can make your hair
and skin feel like they have an excess film left on them
after washing.
HOW CAN IT AFFECT MY HAIR?
When you use soft water to wash your hair, it may feel like
the lather has not been completely rinsed out afterwards.
Your mane can also feel oily, unclean and lack volume,
causing it to fall flat to your head.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
• Spend an extra couple of minutes rinsing
your hair thoroughly after shampooing.
• Always use an intensive conditioner to
replenish lost moisture.
• Use dry shampoo to give extra oomph to
a flat style.

FeatureEmilyLouiseOvery
Expert Tip:
“Hard water will make dry or coarse hair feel more
brittle and stiff, so conditioning and treatment products
are a necessity prior to any styling. Using hard water
will weigh fine hair down, but using the right styling
products will support the hold of your style.”
Simon Cox, Managing Director, Clipso Salon, St. Albans
Expert Tip:
“Washing your tresses with soft water will produce
flyways and can make hair hard to manage, so if you
have fine, longer hair it will take on a static feel. To
combat this, I’d recommend adding some texturising
products like a salt spray or hairspray to weigh it down.
Using more styling products will assist in the hold of
your style.”

WHAT IS IN SEA WATER?
It’s no secret that sea water contains salt, but do you know
how much? On average, seawater in the world’s oceans has
a salinity of about 3.5% (around 35g per litre of water). The
dissolved salts in sea water are mainly sodium-based.
HOW CAN IT AFFECT MY HAIR?
Sea water dries out the hair because the salt in it absorbs
its moisture. As a result, hair becomes plumper, more coarse
and has a surfer girl-type texture. It also damages the hair
shaft, creating a rough feel and creating prolonged dryness.
Furthermore, sea salt left on the hair for too long will eat
away at the hair, which can severely damage your locks.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
• If you regularly swim in the sea recreationally, use an
intensive conditioning mask every time you wash your hair.
• Use heat protectant spray if you are planning
to blow-dry or straighten your hair after
swimming in the sea.
• If you can, wear a swimming hat.
• Soak your hair in hair oil after washing
and allow to air dry to get that natural
softness back.
WHAT IS IN CHLORINATED WATER?
Chlorinated water in swimming pools is treated with chlorine
or hypochlorite to kill certain bacteria and other microbes,
and combat the spread of algae. It can also prevent the
spread of waterborne diseases.
HOW CAN IT AFFECT MY HAIR?
Chlorine is very damaging for the hair, as it is a chemical
which is attracted to itself. This means that once it is present
in the hair, it attracts more chlorine, becoming easily built-up
over time. It is essentially a bleach and dissolves the internal
structure of the hair, which, in severe cases, results in very
porous hair which can eventually become transparent and
look extremely artificial.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?
• Soak your hair in oil or a moisturising mask
before swimming.
• Use a moisturising shampoo and intensive conditioner.
• Go to the salon for frequent check-ups
and intensive moisturising treatments on
your tresses.
• If you don’t want to wear a swimming cap,
tie your hair into a top knot or braid for
damage limitation.
in the water!
Sea water Chlorinated water
Expert Tip:
“If you’re in the sea a lot, I would recommend using
a deeply moisturising shampoo and conditioner and
undergo regular repairing and conditioning treatments.
You should also avoid putting heat on your hair, as any
heat applied to hair with traces of salt in it will shrivel
your locks, leaving hair singed and damaged.”
Stephanie Hayes, Session Stylist and Salon Manager,
Matthew Curtis Hair Design
Expert Tip:
“If swimming in chlorinated water, it is advisable to wet
the hair thoroughly with clean water before entering
the pool and also to apply a mask onto wet hair. This
is because the antioxidants contained in the mask will
repel the chlorine and the saturated hair will help to
prevent any more absorption of the chlorinated water.
After the swim, rinse your hair thoroughly and wash
with a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any chlorine that
may be present.”
