The University envisions to breathe new life
into the Student Union Information Center.
By repositioning the Information Center
into a more prominent location within the
Student Union Building and rethinking the
design to enhance both its visual presence
and campus community access.
Rich with the character of pure modern
architecture, the building is both a figurative
and literal beacon at the heart of campus.
The elegant yet simplified forms and lines
of the glass curtain walls, minimalist columns.
coffered ceilings and concrete balustrade
act in concert to create a modern yet inviting
atmosphere.
In order to preserve the strong character of
the building, we have conceptualized a
new information center which draws it’s clues
from the existing elements of the building and
materials.
This scheme proposes to emulate the
the presence of the hearth located at
the south end of the building. The
concrete and brick hearth has
been peeled away from the facade
giving this ‘heavy’ element a feeling
of floating within the space.
Two solid masses on either side of the
raised counter area are designed
to give the presence of heavy, anchored
object which are unified by a raised
counter. The raised counter also borrows
the vertical wood slats currently found
at the Information Center and re-interprets
their configuration.
