2. When the Streets Talk: Tel Aviv
We are using history to make history. Our history is a magical thing, filled with
many magnified events and some minute details, but it is not the wars,
mistakes and lessons learned that make it so. Rather, it is the fact that when a
person creates something unique and special, it makes a mark, and this mark
may go on to inspire future generations. If the streets could talk, imagine what
stories they would tell, what pictures they would share, and what secrets they
would reveal. But streets can't talk. On the other hand, people can talk, and in
many varied voices. We aim to create the first ever crowd-sourced book
written by the entire city about the city. It will be through the narrative of the
street names including stories from all generations, origins of street names,
interesting historical facts, pictures and/or drawing of the streets and secrets
about them. Our goal is to make history relevant with a web platform that will
collect these stories which will then be edited into a printed book in Hebrew
and English. This web platform can then be used by cities around the world
and The Streets becomes a global project, with Tel Aviv being the first city to
create such a meaningful and interactive book.
