What is Suspension?
Suspension is a heterogeneous mixture that contains solid particles
sufficiently large for sedimentation
 The range of solid particles in suspension 0.5 to 5 micron
 Can be used as orally,parentally or externally
 Chemically stable than solution
Reasons for suspension:
 If patient has dificulties of Consuming solid dosage forms
 Drugs that have very low solubility
 Drugs those have unpleasent taste in their soluble forms.
Properties of good
suspension
 Should settle slowly and should be readily re dispersed in gentle shaking
of container.
 Should pourable
 Particles of a good suspension are small and relatively uniform in size.
 Good suspension have well developed thixotrophy
Classification of
suspension Based on general class:
o Oral suspension(Ex. Paracetamol suspension)
o Externally applied suspension(Ex. Calamine lotion)
o Parenteral suspension(Ex.Insulin zinc suspension)
 Based on proportion of solid particles:
 Dilute suspension (Ex. Cortison acetate)
 Concentrated suspension (Ex. Zinc oxide suspension)
 Based on electrokinetic nature of solid particle:
• Flocculated suspension
• Deflocculated suspension
 Based on size of particle:
 Coarse suspension:particle size greater tham 1 micron in diametre
 Colloidal suspension:particle size less than 1 micron
Preparation Method of
Suspension
 Carefully weigh the container.
 Finely powder all the ingredients, they
should be homogenous in size.
 Wash the motor and paste. Mix the
insoluble powder in motor adding the first
ingredient in smallest amount.
Afterwards, diluted it with other
increasing amount of bulk.
 Add enough vehicle to produce a smooth
paste.
 Add small amount of any non-volatile
solid ingredients and mix well.
 If necessary diluted the suspension with appropriate
vehicle until it’s pourable.
 Examine the suspension visually if it contains any
foreign particle then strain with muslin cloth.
 The formulation of the motor must be homogenous
before transfer. There should be low thick particles
around the pastel and top of the motor. The liquid
should be well agitated before transferring in to bottle.
 Add any volatile solids ingredients, previously dissolved
vehicle.
 Wash the motor and pastel with sufficient volume of
vehicle until they are quite clean.
 Finally, transfer the formation in to a bottle and shake
throughly.
MAGANTA PLUS
Oral suspension
Composition of maganta plus:
Maganta plus oral suspension 5ml contains
magaldrate USP 480mg + simethicone
20mg In 200ml bottle.
Magaldrate is a hydroxymagnesium
aluminate complex that is converted rapidly
in gastric acid to Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3,
which are absorbed poorly and thus provide
a sustained antacid effect.
Simethicone lowers surface tension and
facilitates gas dispersion by causing
coalescence of gas bubbles in the GI tract,
thus helping in their dispersion.
Pharmacology
Magaldrate neutralizes gastric acid, thereby increasing pH of
stomach and duodenal bulb. It also increases lower esophageal
sphincter tone and inhibits smooth muscle contraction and gastric
emptying. Simethicone lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles.
Indication
Hyperacidity, gastric and duodenal ulcer, gastritis, heartburn,
dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux. It is also indicated for the
relief of flatulence, abdominal distention and windy colic.
Dosage & Administration
Suspension (Adult): 2-4 teaspoonfuls after 20-60 minutes of meal
and before sleep or on the basis of physician’s prescription.
Use in children: Not recommended in children under 6 years of
age unless, directed by physician.
Contraindications
Magaldrate is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity
to magnesium and aluminium. It is also contraindicated in patients
with impaired renal functions.
Effectiveness of maganta plus
 This medication is used to treat the symptoms of too much
stomach acid such as stomach upset, heartburn, and acid
indigestion.
 It is also used to relieve symptoms of extra gas such as
belching, bloating, and feelings of pressure/discomfort in
the stomach/gut.
 Simethicone helps break up gas bubbles in the gut.
 Aluminum and magnesium antacids work quickly to lower
the acid in the stomach.
 Liquid antacids usually work faster/better than tablets or
capsules. This medication works only on existing acid in
the stomach. It does not prevent acid production. It may be
used alone or with other medications that lower acid
production (including H2 blockers such as
cimetidine/ranitidine and proton pump inhibitors such as
omeprazole).
Side effects
All medicines may cause side effects, but many
people have no, or minor, side effects. It can cause
the following side effects :
 Constipation;
 Diarrhea;
 Intestinal pain.
 Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching;
difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling
of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue);
 black, tarry stools;
 loss of appetite;
 muscle weakness;
 nausea;
 slow reflexes;
 vomiting; vomit that looks like coffee grounds
How should we take Maganta plus?
 We should use this medication exactly as
directed on the last label, or as prescribed by the
doctor . Do not use it in larger amounts than
recommended.
 Maganta plus is usually taken 20 to 60 minutes
after a meal and at bedtime .We should follow
doctors instruction.
 Shake the suspension well just before measure a
dose.
 Do not take this medication for longer than 2
weeks without doctors advice , we should call
doctor if our symptoms do not improve.
 This medication can cause to
have unusal results with certain
medical test such as an x-ray ,CT
scan or MRI using a radioactive
dye.
 Store the maganta plus at room
temperature away from moisture
and heat and do not freeze.
Important safety information
Do not exceed the recommended dose
without checking with doctor.
If your condition persists , contact your
doctor.
 Simethicone may cause stools to turn
black.
Avoid maganta plus during pregnancy and
Breast-feeding
Who should not take maganta plus?
1. Those who have kidney disease.
2. Hypophosphataemia.
3. Weak people.
4. If anyone takes citrate salts.
5. Who have Alzheimer’s dementia.
6. Severe constipation and diarrhea.
7. Stomach ulcer or intestinal bleeding.
8. A blocakage in your stomach and intestine.
9. Colostomy or ileostomy.
10.For pregnant and after birth child women.
Why Maganta Plus is better than
other product?
 Contents of sample of antacids

REVIEWS
Conclusion
 Pharmaceutical suspensions are solid dispersion
of insoluble or sparingly-soluble drugs, in
aqueous or oily vehicles. They are intended for
oral administration, topical application or
Parenteral administration of drugs. Aerosol
suspension of finely divided, or micronized
drugs, is also another class of pharmaceutical
preparations intended for inhalation.
