ISO is developing the ISO 14067 standard to provide a consistent methodology for quantifying and communicating the carbon footprint of products. ISO 14067 will have two parts - Part 1 will specify principles and requirements for quantifying carbon footprints based on life cycle assessment, while Part 2 will specify requirements for communicating carbon footprint information and guidelines for its use. The standard aims to harmonize with other carbon footprint standards like PAS 2050 and WRI/WBCSD while balancing practicality and environmental integrity. The next steps include additional working group meetings in 2010 to progress the committee draft before seeking approval as an International Standard in 2012.
