2. Introduction
For more than 15 years, Sebastian Palazio has
served in numerous managerial and directorial
positions, predominantly in the finance sector, in both
the US and Nicaragua. An advocate of education,
Sebastian Palazio supports the charitable
organization Empowerment International (EI).
Founded by Kathy Adams in 1998, EI is a nonprofit
group in Nicaragua that provides financial support to
children who cannot afford the necessary uniforms
and supplies for school. EI offers several forms of aid
to both students and families, such as the Home Visit
Program, which teaches parents the benefits of
childhood education.
3. Empowerment International
Adults who are poor in Nicaragua’s rural communities
tend to be illiterate, and may find it difficult to
understand the value in educating children, prompting
them to send their children to work instead of school.
The Home Visit Program assists parents and children
by allocating an EI member to each child in a
community. This member performs routine visits to the
child’s house and ultimately builds a trust relationship
with the child’s guardians. As a result, parents are
given opportunities to participate in parent-teacher
conferences, assist with homework, and promote
positive communication with their children.
