This position is in Disability Determination Services (DDS), Division of Vocational Rehabilitation
Services, Department of Health and Human Services, located in Raleigh, NC. This agency makes
medical entitlement decisions on Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid
disability claims. Psychologists are not involved in the treatment of disability applicants. Our
Psychologists are involved in a paper and electronic review of claimant disability applications and
medical records and apply their training, experience, expertise and judgment to assist in determining
the sufficiency of evidence and assists in using that evidence to determine the severity of impairments
and residual functional capacity, according to Social Security Administration guidelines. This review is
completed in an electronic environment using a computer. Our Psychologists provide consultation and
training exclusively on mental disorders as defined by social security, to DDS Disability Examiners
who perform claim adjudication services and decision-making functions. All work is performed in an
office setting, associating predominately, but not exclusively, with up to 19 staff members in one of
thirty-one DDS case processing units.

The “Padres efectivos” (parent activation): Skills Latina mothers use to get healthcare for their
children study will examine the comparative effectiveness of an advocacy skills intervention for
Latino families raising children with mental health needs compared to usual care with and without
a Latino family focus. As a bilingual researcher, academic, and licensed clinical psychologist, I
was in charge of helping in adapting and developing the parent activation intervention to the Latino
population as well as translating documents from Spanish to English and verifying Spanish
translations for cultural sensitivity. I facilitated focus groups in Spanish with parents with children
with mental health needs to explore relevant issues that the parent activation intervention should
include to fully benefit this population. I verified accuracy of audio recording transcriptions and

code transcripts for themes related to the research questions using an open-coding approach to
identify common themes as well as divergent perspectives.
