Filming and Editing Challenges for Student Documentary
1. Question Six
We used two different makes of Cameras for filming while we used a separate
camera for pictures. We used a Panasonic and aSamsung for filming while we
used a Cannon DSLR to take pictures. A weakness of the equipment was that as
we changed between cameras so did the quality of the shots, as one camera was
a widescreen and the other was full screen. Also the quality of one was worse
than the other so we had some shots that had better quality than others. In future
I would make sure that when the camera was taken for the second time it is the
same camera as used previously.
During the filming process we encountered several problems: the first was time
tabling our filming. We either made a filming arrangement and then someone
cancelled it, made an arrangementand weatherinterrupted our plans or people’s
schedulesclashed with the time arranged. Another problem that arose was that
some of the group did not turn up to a filming session as arranged, whichmeant
certain things could not be done and therefor it meant that filming took longer
than arranged. I was unable to edit as quickly as planned which meant much of it
was completed at the last minute. If more time had been available the quality
could have been better.
Also,as we were not able to keep the same camera through filming, we shifted
from different makes to different models versions of the same make of camera,
which meant that our clips we had filmed ranged from wide screen to full screen
and in picture quality from poor to high. Therefore more time had to be spent on
re-filming and it meant I had to spend more time editing so as to edit out the
poor quality filming.
As statedearlierweather was a problem and as we started filming in a sunny/
cloudy sky we needed the same weather to continue filming which was hard to
come by.And when the conditions where right very few of us were available for
filming. Also, during filming high/strong wind caused voices to be drowned out
and audio became distorted. This made editing was hard and tricky to get the
voices loud enough to be heard over the wind. To resolve this we recorded the
actor’s voices in a quiet room anddubbed them over the clips. This again caused
problem as getting the lip synchronization to match was a problem and was not
possible on all clips. This caused problems when editing but I believe it does not
distract the audience from the action of the sequence.
The only pieces of new equipment that we used were the different makes of
camera that we used.
While editing I learned how to use Final Cut Express HD, an editing program the
College uses on its Macs. I already knew the basics of editing through past
experiences, so while using Final Cut I learned the following skills which were
useful for this project: How to add points to an audio track and then to change
the level of volume produced in a particular part of an audio clip; this meant I
was able to remove unwanted voices and background noises so improving the
quality of the sound. I also learned how to trim a clip without placing it on a
timeline and several other ways of trimming a clip down; this meant I could
remove unwanted parts of the clip being used. I also was able to manage and use

the timeline more effectively by the end of the production, making my role
easier, which was helpful as there was little time left towards the end. In
additionthroughout the editing process we used a program called Live Type to
create the titles for the sequence; this I feel makes it more effective than the plain
text used in the first draft. When importing the text into Final cut I learned how
to re-size, change position of the text on screen as the text could not be edited
like normal text.
Also we used another program to create several sound tracks to include in the
sequence. This was done because it meant we would have copyright free
soundtracks which were more suited to what we believed would fit the
sequence. This was different from the original idea of using live music. But again
time restraints meant alternatives had to be used.
I found the role as editor enjoyable, interesting and was able to use the skills I
already had with the new skills I learned. Only problem I had was towards final
deadline when I had little time to finish the sequence, which meant that some
parts were rushed.
