Editor's Notes
Hello, my name is Kezia Williamson, and I am Head of Place at Innovate UK KTN. I am delighted to be here today, and a big thank you to John and the organising team for inviting me and for all the hard work that has gone into today.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Innovate UK system, I’ll start with an introduction. Innovate UK is the UK’s innovation agency. I work in the connecting and convening part. Our role at Innovate UK KTN is to connect for positive change.
Part of UK Research and Innovation, we work with UK government to invest over £7 billion a year in research and innovation by partnering with academia and industry to make the impossible, possible.
Through the UK’s nine leading academic and industrial funding councils, we create knowledge with impact.
My role within this system is to look after what do in places around the UK that benefit those places. This includes developing strategic collaboration activities with key local stakeholders, business clusters, as well as funders and investors
The activity I want to introduce to you today, is some of what we are doing to help places around the UK to reach net zero through innovation
Our goal is to help make UK net zero a reality by working with local authorities to inspire, involve, and invest, enabling the adoption of innovative solutions, and ensuring that no part of the UK gets left behind
Our Net Zero Places Innovation Network is a community of local authorities spanning the UK. In particular we convene officers with roles covering climate, net zero, and sustainability
After all, we’re all facing the same challenges, so we are convening working groups to share knowledge and work together to solve these common, yet complex challenges.
Our focus is our community of local authority officers, who have net zero targets, and need to be able to understand how technology can support and procure innovative solutions.
We work with procurement professionals, who can amend or create procurement frameworks for the innovative solutions that can be used by many local authorities, bringing them in early in the process
We also work with other providers in the ecosystem who have complementary activities, tools, and funding opportunities to enable UK Net Zero. This includes Net Zero Hubs, Catapults and Local Government Association
We then work across our extensive network of nearly a quarter of a million innovators to find those net zero solutions that can best support the public sector to reach those targets.
How are we delivering this activity and most importantly, how can you get involved? I mentioned that we inspire, involve and invest, so let’s explore what that means in practice
Be inspired through our monthly newsletter filled with insights, funding, news, events, case studies and signposting across the ecosystem. All tailored for local authority officers like you. You can sign up on our Net Zero Places page.
You can get involved. Our next webinar is on 26th October and will provide an overview of the UK’s net zero strategy through a public sector lens
You can also get involved in our working groups and sector specific activity. Rural mobility, Hydrogen, and Lowland Peat are just a few examples.
And the all-important money question! Innovate UK is investing £60m over 3 years into the Net Zero Living Programme, which aims to help places and businesses across the UK to accelerate the delivery of the transition to net zero.
For example, £2m has been invested across 31 projects spanning the UK for feasibility studies to understand what approaches to test in their local area with topics including decarbonizing transport, housing retrofit and local energy planning.
Thank you for your attention during this whistle-stop tour of how we can support you to engage in innovation on the journey to net zero. If you want to find out more, you can explore our website
Or, please feel free to connect directly with me or a member of my team. Simon and Kevin are both experienced local authority officers now running the net zero places community and activities. We’d love to hear from you.
