detective Jackie Chan hot on his heels,
you’ll be seeing Macau like it’s rarely been
portrayed before. The most grandiose
aspects of the Las Vegas of the East will
be seen onscreen via its old, film-friendly
heritage buildings and up-to-the-minute
glittering casinos. In fact, Skiptrace, an
international production with American
and Chinese investment, could be the film
that turns Macau into a popular setting
for the international movie industry.

Of course, it’s a long way from being called
“Macauwood” just yet. But there are signs
that the former Portuguese enclave will
become a desirable backdrop for big-budget
motion pictures. Hong Kong filmmakers have
already recognised this. Director Johnnie To
has made Macau the setting for his 2009 film
Vengeance. Stars Chow-Yun Fat, Andy Lau,
Shu Qi, Isabella Leung and most recently
Josie Ho have also made films there. So have
Korean producers, who have used Macau as
a setting for several television productions
and its 2012 box office hit The Thieves. And
more recently, Oscar-winning director Martin
Scorsese was tapped to make a short film
with Robert DeNiro, Brad Pitt and Leonardo
DiCaprio for the coming Studio City resort.
“I love Macau,” says Renny Harlin, the
director helming Skiptrace, while surveying
the grandiose indoor surroundings from his
mezzanine perch at the MGM Grand Macau
Hotel. Somewhat surprisingly, the 55-year-old,
who is responsible for some of Hollywood’s
most spectacular action blockbusters—and
high-profile, big-budget failures—over
the past 25 years, has been calling the city
home for most of the past year. “I think it’s a

當然，現在稱澳門為“澳萊塢”
還為時過早，但種種跡象表明這塊
曾經是葡萄牙殖民地的城市，正成
為大製作影片的必爭之地。
香港電影人則早著先機。2009
年，杜琪峰的《復仇》就在澳門取
景；而周潤發、劉德華、舒淇、梁
洛施、何超儀都曾在澳門拍過電
影；來自韓國的製作團隊也曾在澳
門拍攝2012年韓國票房賣座冠軍《
奪寶聯盟》。最近，連奧斯卡最
佳導演馬汀．斯科塞斯也受邀攜
同羅伯特．德尼羅、布拉德．皮
特和萊昂納多．迪卡普里奧前來
澳門為即將開幕的“新濠影業度
假村”拍攝短片。
《絕地逃亡》在澳門美高梅酒

的55歲導演，拍過多套賣座動作
大片，也曾執導千萬製作但票
房慘淡的電影，在過去的近一

兩年多以前，成龍萌生了這部電影的
最初構思，希望透過這部動作片真實地表
現出中國各方面。他與兩位美國編劇斟洽
後，Harlin受命接下了這個電影項目。對
此他說道：“我和成龍有數面之緣，一次
是因為第一部《尖峰時刻》，那時候我沒
法接拍，後來的另外一部也談不攏，於是
這 第 三 部 可 謂 是 ‘ 三 顧 茅 廬 ’ 了 。 這 是
成龍對中國這個龐大國度的情意，包括澳
門，影片大部分故事也在這裡發生，因為
他一直都熱愛澳門，希望把澳門帶到全世
界面前。”

beautiful place and can offer a good backdrop
for all kinds of films.”
More than two years ago, Jackie Chan
came up with the concept for this action-
adventure with a view towards realistically
showing all the different sides of China. After
fleshing out the concept with two American
scriptwriters, Harlin was brought on board to
make it all happen. “We met a couple times
before—once for the first Rush Hour, which I
wasn’t able to do, and then for another movie
I couldn’t do, so the third time is the charm,”
says Harlin. “This is his personal love letter to
China. That includes Macau and a good part
of the story takes place here, because Jackie’s
always loved Macau and wanted to show that
to the world.”
In the film, Johnny Knoxville (best known
for the Jackass TV series), gets in trouble at a
Macau casino and is forced to flee. On the run,
he meets a young woman (mainland Chinese
actress Fan Bingbing), who is coincidentally
related to a Hong Kong police detective
(played by Chan). As Chan attempts to bring
Knoxville’s character to justice, he realises
that the American has been wrongly accused.
By a twist of fate, they end up working on an
even bigger case. “And during the course of
the story, we travel,” says Harlin. “The story
starts in Macau and Hong Kong, and then we
go to Russia, Mongolia, across China to Guilin
and back to Hong Kong. We see everything
from the desert to the Great Wall and, of
course, the glitter and incredible vistas of
Hong Kong and Macau.”
It’s an epic odyssey, and Harlin claims
he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Three-quarters of the way through an 85-
day shoot, he revels in the idea of Chan’s
participation, an all-Chinese crew—and
China itself. He talks of team spirit, a
great camaraderie among the cast and
the opportunity to show the way the
country really is to the world.
“Even for Chinese, China is such
a big country that there are a lot of
areas that they haven’t been to or seen,” says
Harlin. “It’s really going to open their eyes.
I feel it’s an incredibly fortunate moment
for me to be involved in this film because
the film industry is just exploding in China,
and the box-office results are surpassing US
results. And more and more international
productions are starting to work with the
Chinese and in China.”
What goes unspoken, though, is that it’s
also an opportunity for the Los Angeles-based
filmmaker and Hong Kong’s biggest star
to help restore their reputations to former
heights. Harlin’s most recent films include
the critically panned The Legend of Hercules
and the little seen 5 Days of War, which was
about the Russian-Georgian conflict. It could
even be said that his career has never fully
recovered from 1995’s pirate epic Cutthroat
Island, which held the Guinness Book of
World Records title of The Biggest Flop of
All-Time. “That was such a disappointment,
considering we put so much work into it and
had such high hopes,” Harlin frankly admits
nearly two decades later.
For Chan, Skiptrace marks an opportunity
to rewrite the stereotypes of the roles he
played in films like Rush Hour and Shanghai
Knights. Between the lines, it’s also another
attempt to overcome the mixed feelings
many Hong Kong residents have about recent
political comments he’s made. “On a daily
basis, I’m blown away by the physical skill he
shows,” says Harlin. “He will always come up
with something extra and he realises that it’s
all in the details. We’ve very similar in the
sense that he loves filmmaking so much. He
doesn’t even leave the set.”
As they head towards the finish line, there’s
certainly a sense of importance about the
project. The Finnish-born Harlin, who used
to sport shoulder-length hair and reportedly
enjoyed his share of partying, now displays
a short coif and a determined, optimistic

再穿梭到中國桂林，最後又回到香港。從
戈壁沙漠到雄偉的萬里長城，再到澳門和
香港的燈紅酒綠五光十色，這種種景觀都
讓人感到十分震撼。”
這是一段史詩般的奇幻旅程，Harlin
也認為這是電影的合適風格。影片其中四
分之三的拍攝僅僅用了85天便完成，他深
深感激成龍本人的參與、整個中國製作團
隊，當然還有中國自然條件的鼎力支援。
他不停地談到團隊精神、演員間的戰友之
情，以及當中向全世界展現一個真實中國
的機緣。
Harlin說 ： “ 中 國 太 大 了 ， 有 很 多
地 方 甚 至 連 中 國 人 自 己 也 沒 去 過 ， 很 多
東西也沒見過，電影裡面的場面會讓他們
大開眼界。我對於自己能夠參與這部影片
的拍攝感到很榮幸，中國的電影產業正在
騰飛，其電影總票房收入正超越美國。同
時，越來越多國際大製作也開始選擇與中
國團隊合作，及在中國境內進行拍攝和
製作。”
言下之意，對這位洛杉磯電影人和香
港首屈一指的大明星來說，這也是兩人有所
突破、再創高峰的絕佳機會。
Harlin近幾年的作品包括備受電影評論
界抨擊的《大力神》和票房慘敗、講述俄
羅斯格魯吉亞衝突的《八月戰事》。他於
1995年推出的海盜巨獻《割喉島》，甚至被
《吉尼斯世界記錄大全》稱為“史上最大爛
片”，有人更認為他從此一蹶不振。將近
20年後，Harlin坦誠道：“我們勞心勞力拍
攝，對它的期望也很高，可是結果卻很讓人
失望。”
而對成龍來說，《絕地逃亡》也有機會
讓他擺脫諸如《尖峰時刻》、《皇家威龍》
這類電影裡的陳舊戲路。換句話說，這也是
他擺脫因為其最近發表之政治言論而激起
香港社會不滿的最佳時機，藉此洗脫負面的
形象。
Harlin則評價道：“跟他每天接觸多了，
他於電影裡所秀的功夫讓我感到目瞪口呆。
他總是有些出其不意的點子，並且非常注重
細節。我們都是熱愛電影的人，他甚至不願
意離開片場。”
隨著拍攝即將結束，這個電影項目的重要
意義也越加鮮明。芬蘭出生的Harlin，曾經
留著及肩長髮，傳聞中常常流連夜店。如今

4. DIE HARD 2 (1990)
John McClane, the extraordinary ordinary cop, has to stop
terrorists at an airport. Filled with non-stop action, the
sequel to the original even outdid its predecessor at the
box office.
CLIFFHANGER (1993)
Sylvester Stallone is a mountain climber who has to
conquer his inner demons and stop a mountain heist in a
film that had plenty of breathless sequences, including the
most expensive aerial stunt ever. “It was my greatest high
when we presented it at Cannes and I was there with my
mom, Elizabeth Taylor and Sylvester Stallone,” says Harlin.
“I knew it was never going to get better than this.”
THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (1996)
Geena Davis (pictured above with Samuel Jackson) stars
as a schoolteacher with amnesia. With good reason: she’s
really a CIA assassin. Likeable characters and incredible
action sequences highlight what’s considered to be
Harlin’s best film. “We are working on a script for Long Kiss
Goodnight 2,” he says. “Co-star Samuel L Jackson has
signed on.”
DEEP BLUE SEA (1999)
The sharks are the stars here, as they have been
genetically engineered to become smarter. Predictably,
they unleash terror. It’s Jaws on steroids. And mindless fun
to boot.
12 ROUNDS (2009)
An arms dealer is double-crossed by a member of the
FBI. He launches a game of revenge that goes on for 12
rounds. Fast-paced tension and action ensue.

他說：“即使我從事這行業已經25年了，
我 還 是 會 感 到 既 忐 忑 、 又 緊 張 及 興 奮 ， 因
為我希望能確定我所做的每一步，都是正確
無誤。這的確給了我很大壓力，工作也很辛
苦。但當一切都圓滿地完成時，又實在讓人開
心不已。”
Harlin相信，他拍攝《絕地逃亡》時引進
了美國的電影製作風格，如果票房成績理想，
他甚至會考慮搬到這裡，因為這裡充滿了發
展潛力，這裡就是未來。在與Harlin傾談中，
已可確定憑藉這套電影的製作班底、逼真的場
景，以及當中所突顯的中國特色，已足以讓這
部動作大片征服全世界了。
對澳門來說，這也是個大好消息。隨著其
飛速的發展，電影人或許不用再為了拍一部帶
有賭城風情的電影，而吵著要去拉斯維加斯
取景，取而代之，他們可以選擇前往澳門的美
高梅酒店、威尼斯人酒店，甚或是大三巴牌坊
拍攝。
Harlin對此表示非常贊同：“我喜歡這裡
的景觀，融合了懷舊歷史和新事物，這種種都
讓我著迷—有超現代的、流光溢彩的賭場和酒
店，也有懷舊的老城區。
這裡為各種類型的電影都提供了非常好的
瑰麗拍攝背景，我很期待重臨，再拍一部只關
於澳門的電影。我想這將會是件相當有意思的
事情。”

been doing this for 25 years, I’m anxious and
nervous and excited, because I want to make
sure that I get everything done right,” he says.
“It’s definitely a lot of pressure and hard work.
But when things get done well, it’s such a joy.”
Harlin believes he’s bringing an American-
style filmmaking approach to the making of
Skiptrace and if all goes well, he claims he’ll
even move here because this is where the
future is. And while talking to Harlin, one
gets the clear sense that the crew, the settings
and what today’s China has to offer have
all contributed to what could be a fantastic
adventure to show off to the world.
This could be good news for Macau, too.
As it grows at a breakneck pace, filmmakers
might not clamour to make a Hangover-style
film in Las Vegas. Instead, they might want to
film at the MGM Grand, The Venetian or even
the Ruins of St Paul’s. Harlin certainly agrees.
“I love the visuals here—the mixture of the
old and new: the super-modern, glitzy casinos
and hotels and then the old Macau,” he says.
“I think it can offer a good backdrop for all
kinds of films and I would be very excited to
come back and make another movie where
the whole story takes place in Macau. I think
it would be really fun.”

《絕嶺雄風》(1993)

《特工狂花》(1996)
