104 up for ‘amazing’ Grace
A MOTHER who fled Singapore
during the Second World War
to protect her family has cel-
ebrated her 104th birthday.
Grace Stowe, a resident of
Acorn Care Home, in Carring-
ton, was born in China on May
23, 1911, and has lived through
two world wars as well as trav-
elling the globe during.
Grace has a large family, with
five children and a host of
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren, and was sent
many cards and well wishes for
her big day.
Hanson Stowe, 75, of Best-
wood Park, is her youngest
son.
He said his mum had seen a
lot in her 104 years, and that he
owed her his life.
He explained: “I was born
right at the start of the Second
World War in Singapore.
“My parents had me and
three other children at the
time. It was a terrible time and
it was a hard life back in those
days.
“We had to flee from the
main city of Singapore into
more rural areas and I’m very
grateful to my mum for pro-
tecting me and my siblings.”
In 1945, after the war, Grace

Mr Stowe said his mum had
always been active, which he
thought helped her maintain
such good health.
He said: “She used to do lots
of walking when she lived near
Bestwood Park.
“It’s a very special occasion
and it’s very special to be in-
volved with in this way.”
Vicky Barret, activity co-or-
dinator at the home, said that
everyone was blown away by
Grace’s good health.
She said: “Everyone’s
amazed at how well she is for
“She would walk up the hill
and around the park for an
hour before coming home –
and this was when she was 96.
“She also used to catch the
bus into the city and do lots of
shopping around the Victoria
Centre.”
Denise Shepherd, hospitality
manager at the care home, said
Grace’s 104th birthday was a
very special occasion.
She said: “I’ve only ever seen
about four or five people live to
be Grace’s age in 30 years.
her age. She’s still very fit and
mobile.”
She added that staff had a
special celebration planned for
Grace. “All the other residents
asked me to get her a card so
that they could all sign it. We’re
also going to be having a party
with some cake.”
‘’I’m very grateful to
my mum for
