Purpose and Hypotheses
 The purpose of the present study was to determine
if there was a difference in effectiveness between
different therapy types
 The hypotheses of the present study was that mean
gain scores for the drug and cognitive-behavioral
therapy condition would be higher than both just
drug and just cognitive-behavioral therapy
conditions
Independent and Dependent Variables
• Independent variable: Therapy Type
 Cognitive-Behavioral
 Medication
 Combination
• Dependent Variable: Depression rating
Participants
 N = 60
 Aged 18-30
 Type 1 Diabetes and Depressive Disorder
 Participation was voluntary and anonymous and participants were
treated in accordance with the “Ethical Principles of Psychologist
and Code of Conduct” (APA, 2002)
Materials
 Beck’s Depression Inventory
 Paxil
Materials Example
Procedure
• Signed Consent
• Baseline depression measured
• Divided into three groups
 Group 1: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
 Group2: Medication
 Group 3: Combination
• 2 months of Therapy
• Depression level measured
• Debriefed and Released
Results
• There was significant difference of mean gain scores for
therapy type F (2, 57) = 122.18, p<.05
• Significant difference between all group pairings
