You must be the change you wish to see in the world: Mahatma Gandhi
A Suggested Global Solution to Global problems based on the Bellagio
Initiative
CHANGE THE IDEAS
This is a lateral thinking approach as one has to step back from one’s philanthropic
passions and national identity and take a hard look at the whole of humanity.
We have sent the Curiosity Rover to Mars yet 7 year old children in Africa look after
their younger siblings as their parents die from HIV, women die at child birth and
children die from malnutrition.
Human civilization has underachieved.
The major reasons are:
1. Lack of effective global leadership
To develop global leadership we have to improve political leadership .This is
a back to basics campaign where we have to go back to Plato.
“Ruin comes when the trader, whose heart is lifted by wealth, becomes ruler;
or when the general uses his army to establish a military dictatorship. The
producer is at his best in battle; they are both at their worst in public office;
and in their crude hands politics submerges statesmanship. For
statesmanship is a science and an art; one must have lived for it and been
long prepared. Only a philosopher –king is fit to guide a nation. Until
philosophers are kings, or the kings and princes of this world have the spirit
and power of philosophy, and wisdom and political leadership meet in the
same man, cities will never cease from ill, nor the human race.”
Develop an MA in Political Leadership where philosophy, empathy, ethics,
financial management are taught.
CHANGE THE AGENDA
Argue for a new world philosophy
Developing the argument for a new symbiotic philosophy where the benefit of
the business to shareholders is thought to be less important than the benefit
to the human-earth ecosystem.( Pollination of flowers by bees example)
2. Lack of global coordination and strategy to tackle global problems of inequity
in all aspects of human life
All NGO’s work in a globally disorganized way in terms of global
strategy and frequently replicate work and there are more of them in one
area of the world and less or complete absence in others.
3. Artificial manmade national boundaries
We have to bridge these artificial boundaries through technology
4. Corruption, poor governance and short term electoral goal driven government
policy in developing and developed countries
Awareness of this and the ability to work around this are key initially.
5. The inability to optimally use Earth Inc. and the Global Mind for global social
good
Our Achilles heel!
6. Failure of democratic capitalism to bridge the gap between the rich and poor
and instead widen it.
Argue for a new form of global form of capitalism
Development of a new symbiotic capitalism where the social entrepreneurship
based business model benefits the whole of humanity and the earth.
THE SOLUTION TO ALL THE GLOBAL PROBLEMS ARE INVESTMENT IN
GLOBAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATION
There can be exponential benefit if all the NGO and social
entrepreneurship work across the world is centrally coordinated on a
global scale and strategically targeted.
Develop social entrepreneurship based action research models in the
communities across the world with international development experts
Leading International Development Organisations should not only position
their expertise between policy makers and think tanks but also between social
entrepreneurs and communities. So they undertake action research projects
with social entrepreneurs in the community.
Set up a Global Coordinating Center with HR & IT capability for strategic
coordination of all NGO social work and social entrepreneurship across the
world across multiple domains of health, water, food, sanitation, education,
employment etc by developing functional interoperability of social good data
to target greatest underserved areas of need with appropriate resources and
interventions.
Develop the Global Coordinating Centre for Social Good
CHANGE HOW WE WORK
There are several innovative approaches to increase interoperability with specific
data sets. However, data in the developing world is not knowledge because it is often
fabricated and corrupted. Data becomes knowledge through human deductive
reasoning and now through computational science, which requires super computers.
With a world population of 7 billion, arbitrarily defining a village as 700 people,
we could equip 10 million multipurpose workers in each and every village in
the world with a smart phone and digitally link them directly with the Global
Coordinating Centre.
The global data would become accurate, relevant, live and cut across artificial
national boundaries. Computational science would analyse these vast amounts of
data much quicker than the human mind.
The situation room at the Global Coordinating Center could be virtual using a
global software based platform like say 10 million android phones connected
to facebook and would collate and hold all such data sets across the multiple
domains of health, water, food, environment, sanitation, education and
employment etc, analyse them live to generate knowledge and coordinate
targeted interventions through extensive partnerships , collaborations and
interdisciplinary working .
This Global Centre would not lobby or influence any government policy but would log
all government activity for strategic decision making.
CHANGE THE MEASUREMENTS
This Global Center would then enable nonprofits/social enterprises to track their
performance and manage their programs. One could look up a nonprofit or social
enterprise to find information combining feedback from those who have received the
service, outcome data and funder perspectives to inform decisions about investing
time and money.
Just as NICE informs best practice to the NHS in UK, this Global Center could share
best practice among practitioners in the field.
Any donor could find sources of funding by issue area or geography to help make
informed decisions about scaling programs and one could analyse non profit
organizations and social enterprises by both financial and programmatic
performance. These services could ensure financial sustainability of the Center.
CHANGE WHO IS INVOLVED
Finally, over 20 years with full structural interoperability of all social good datasets
over time, this Global Coordinating Center would become Earth Inc. for social good.
This would change human civilization forever.
