1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our media product represents one main social group which are those having a mental
disability. We have used conventions of the representation of this social group within
the psychological horror. In our film we have included the stereotype of someone with
a mental disorder. We have represented this consistently throughout our piece, to
achieve this we have used different drama techniques. For example we have
successfully portrayed this in our opening piece.
Our first scenes are close up of the characters lips and eyes. This was done to create
an edgy, discomforting effect. This is an effect we have borrowed from 'vertigo' to
give the feeling of our genre, we made sure that our character gave the right image,
with the props and facial expressions. For our setting we have chosen to do this in a
dark room as this straight away portrays the genre of our film. In addition as for our
costume we have used a white long gown, as from our research this is what someone
in a mental institution would wear. The use of purple makeup around her eyes
emphasises bruising, also the bruises on her arms and chest. Again shows the
representation of mental disability, as we have chosen to do psychological horror,
mental disability is particularly used in this genre. We have chosen to only use one
character that is isolated to show the social groups and give the audience an
understanding of the genre.
The uninvited is a prime example for representations of mental disability, With Emily
Browning playing a character who has got out of an mental institutions following her
suicide attempt, but even after she is seeing things. She links to our character because
they are both delusional so they are seeing things that are not real.
