The hero and the saint are “ideal types”
• Both are important and neither should be dismissed in relation to the other.
Heroes
• Heroes are persons of great courage who perform extraordinary and praiseworthy
deeds.
– historical, mythical, spiritual, etc.
• before becoming a hero – they are unknown, ordinary – conflict draws out the
courage of the hero.
• heroes push through the fear; courage isn’t absence of fear, but rather facing it;
they acknowledge their feelings but rise above them.
• heroes fight for others.
