FieldServer Case Study - University of Arizona
Overview
Energy Management is very high on the priority list of any large establishment wishing to decrease overhead
costs. When the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona was faced with this problem, they also realized that
they must first gain access to the energy meters via the campus WAN (Wide Area Network) that was using
BACnet IP. Most of the energy meters were using Modbus protocol. Joe Branaum, Manager of Integrated
Systems Group for the University of Arizona, was interested in the FieldServer not only to integrate the energy
meters into the campus SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The University utilizes BACnet as
their campus-wide building automation communications protocol and needed a method to integrate information
from over 435 buildings to BACnet IP.
“After evaluating several alternatives to meet this integration requirement we then performed a series of on-site
testing of the devices,” said Joe Branaum. “We finally decided on using FieldServer to bring the various,
Modbus, LonWorks and Simplex devices into the Campus SCADA. FieldServer outperformed all other solutions
and proved to be a very tried and tested solution.”

While energy management
controls was the initial primary
focus of this integration project,
the University also had fire alarm
panels, utility systems and other
devices that needed to be
integrated to the BACnet IP
system. The University of
Arizona has over 435 building in
its vastly spread out Campus.
Devices and systems
manufactured by over 35
different vendors utilizing such
protocols as Modbus, LonWorks
and Simplex indicates the extent
on the integration path from
legacy devices into the new Web based SCADA, which is resident on the BACnet IP campus WAN. The web
based SCADA enables Engineering, Maintenance and other facilities access into the system for on-line system
access from any web browser on the Campus network which will increase visibility and turnaround time for the
running & maintenance of the Campus Building Automation system.
Key personnel are provided with web enabled cell phone, which allows them access in to the SCADA system,
thus a technician can receive an alarm on their cell phone and use the same cell phone to trouble shoot the
application. If the technician needs further information from the SCADA system a laptop can be plugs into the
cell phone for full access into the SCADA system.
So far they have brought approximately 38,000 points into the system and there are still more facilities needing
to be integrated. The University has already shown that this integration has met their savings goal of payback in
less than five years. Also they found that they could throttle back their fans and pumps when the building was
not at peak load, extending the equipment life as well as saving energy. All this information allows University
management to now have successful Energy Management to drive down costs and increase building
efficiencies.

“Profiles” make it easy for the operator to map protocols with pre-defined configurations. Once a profile
(Configuration File) has been developed the user simply needs to open the FieldServer Configuration
Parameters page (included in each QuickServer, SlotServer or FS-B35Series gateway) and select the profile
desired from the list of available profiles. The advantage of course is that this feature makes it extremely easy
and fast to set up the gateway for a specific application. There are a number of profiles that have already been
established and are listed below.
Profiles benefits:
• Quickly configures your FieldServer gateway with the necessary configurations, without spending time
writing a profile every time it is needed.
• Each Device Profile can support one or multiple of the same or different controllers connected to the
FieldServer gateway.
• Makes sure that the configuration is correct each time it is used.
Procedure:
1. The user simply goes to the IP address for the specific FieldServer Gateway and it will open the
Configuration Parameters screen through the on-board web browser.
2. Select “Add” and choose from the list of available device profiles, add in the Node ID and save
3. The Configuration file is automatically generated from the profiles selected.
For an on-line demonstration please visit http://64.60.250.211
Available Device Profiles:
The Library of Profiles is continually being expanded to include more equipment with common data sets. Let us
know if you have one to add. To see the current profiles that available, visit:

FieldServer Data Sheet - FS-B3510-05
Overview
The FieldServer protocol gateway makes it easy for integrators to
interface devices utilizing various building or industrial protocols. As
the leading manufacturer of protocol gateways in the building
automation industry, FieldServer has developed the largest driver
library in the industry and the widest range of gateways available,
designed to meet the needs of system integrators.
The FS-B3510-05 provides a wealth of features to enable data
transfer between different devices and networks utilizing serial (RS-
232 or RS-485), Ethernet and LonWorks. The multiport design allows
for serial-to-serial, serial-to-Ethernet and LonWorks interfaces. With a
larger point count than any similar gateway, the FieldServer FS-B35
series provides a single device solution for your networking needs.
The FieldServer is designed to meet a wide range of interface needs
and it is easily configured as a master or a slave.
The FieldServer Toolkit with the updated browser-based interface makes it easy to find specific FieldServers on
the network and provides a user-friendly method to determine status, network settings, node information, map
descriptors and more. The interface also makes it easy to transfer files to update FieldServer in the field.
Configuration is easy, but if needed, configuration services are available from FieldServer Technologies support
team. The proven FieldServer support team is recognized around the world for its knowledge of the many
different protocols involved in building automation.
FieldServer Technologies continuously strives to enhance our gateways and the latest FS-B35 series includes a
major software upgrade, resulting in significant enhancements in performance, including:
 40% higher point count capability - some protocols are major memory hogs, and the result is that they can
slow down performance of any gateway. With the greater memory enhancement, the FS-B35 Series can
easily handle all of the drivers extremely well.
 Memory utilization monitoring - the user is provided with application memory statistics (in both kB and as a
percentage of the available memory) enabling optimal matching of device models and configurations to
specific applications.
 Improved stability and performance under high loads - the new software enhances the operation making it
more forgiving to configuration problems with fewer crashes when capacity limits are reached.
 USB firmware update - this allows the firmware or configuration of the FieldServer to be updated from a
USB flash drive whenever it is inserted, enabling users to easily update firmware in the field. This is a great
time saver if you have multiple FieldServers in the field.

  • 8. www.sierramonitor.com FieldServer Case Study - University of Arizona Overview Energy Management is very high on the priority list of any large establishment wishing to decrease overhead costs. When the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona was faced with this problem, they also realized that they must first gain access to the energy meters via the campus WAN (Wide Area Network) that was using BACnet IP. Most of the energy meters were using Modbus protocol. Joe Branaum, Manager of Integrated Systems Group for the University of Arizona, was interested in the FieldServer not only to integrate the energy meters into the campus SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). The University utilizes BACnet as their campus-wide building automation communications protocol and needed a method to integrate information from over 435 buildings to BACnet IP. “After evaluating several alternatives to meet this integration requirement we then performed a series of on-site testing of the devices,” said Joe Branaum. “We finally decided on using FieldServer to bring the various, Modbus, LonWorks and Simplex devices into the Campus SCADA. FieldServer outperformed all other solutions and proved to be a very tried and tested solution.”

The University of Arizona has over 435 building in its vastly spread out Campus. Devices and systems manufactured by over 35 different vendors utilizing such protocols as Modbus, LonWorks and Simplex indicates the extent on the integration path from legacy devices into the new Web based SCADA, which is resident on the BACnet IP campus WAN. The web based SCADA enables Engineering, Maintenance and other facilities access into the system for on-line system access from any web browser on the Campus network which will increase visibility and turnaround time for the running & maintenance of the Campus Building Automation system. Key personnel are provided with web enabled cell phone, which allows them access in to the SCADA system, thus a technician can receive an alarm on their cell phone and use the same cell phone to trouble shoot the application. If the technician needs further information from the SCADA system a laptop can be plugs into the cell phone for full access into the SCADA system. So far they have brought approximately 38,000 points into the system and there are still more facilities needing to be integrated. The University has already shown that this integration has met their savings goal of payback in less than five years. Also they found that they could throttle back their fans and pumps when the building was not at peak load, extending the equipment life as well as saving energy. All this information allows University management to now have successful Energy Management to drive down costs and increase building efficiencies.
