A short story by Andrea Maturana, “Afuera y en Ropa Interior” was analyzed, translated, and again
analyzed as a means of uncovering meaning and understanding how to reincorporate meaning that
is lost in translation. Translation strategies such as Levy’s minimax principle and Reiss’ strategy of
treating the author as an artist were utilized. Dissecting the story downto its concepts and
translating the concepts into another language revealed the real message of the author.

Spanish Translation and Applied Spanish Translation
Together these classes provided fundamental understanding of the research, systems, and methods
that go into translation and affordedthe opportunity to practicetranslation using those methods.
Glossaries of terminology were developed and critiqued to practice for real world translation
assignments.
Spanish-English Interpreting and Applied Spanish-English Interpreting
These classes complemented one another to create a well-rounded interpreter with a strong
understanding of various interpreting strategies and how to appropriately use those techniques. As
a result the interpreter is more aware of how communication can be impacted by nuances in the
conversation and how to negotiate culture and language in an interpreted interaction.
Discourse Organization and Interpreting
This class allowed students to research the impacts of various aspects of discourse and learn how to
accurately reflect whatis communicated through pauses, intonation, and other conversational
nuances in specific professional settings.
Language Engineering and Terminology Management
This class affordedstudents the opportunity to learn to use Trados Language Engineering Software.
Projectmanagement was practiced from the proposal to sending the finalized deliverables,
allowing students to understand how translations are completed in the corporate world.
Cultural Ambassador in Argentina
Ten months studying in abroad affordedthe opportunity to learn about cultural traditions and
beliefs and understand that there are regional differences in those traditions and beliefs. Language
skills were also developed to near-native proficiency.
