Editor's Notes
I graduated in December 2016, and took my NCLEX-RN in January 2017. I was able to pass my NCLEX in 75 questions, and also took a position at a hospital shortly before my NCLEX exam. I was hired as a graduate nurse and had the opportunity to obtain my license within 90 days of my hiring date. Fortunately, the experience has helped me to grow and develop professionally as a nurse. Especially as it pertains to being a new graduate, and a new nurse on a busy medical/surgical unit overnight. Nights is great for developing because you hate to utilize less resources and develop ways to critically think and communicate as well. I enjoy working nights and have adjusted well, though it took me over a month to adjust to the new hours.
As a new graduate, I was in an eight week orientation period. From there I started with 1 patient and on nights I often have anywhere from 7-10 patients. It is more challenging when you have more patients but you must just organize your data and ultimately practice SAFE nursing when you have more patients (a heavier assignment). Taking your time is a great way to ensure safety and always asking for help when it is necessary. Utilizing communication skills and working as a member of a team and also knowing your resources, such as the Resource Nurse. I ultimately want to transition as a professional nurse and want to obtain my PhD. It is a personal goal I set aside for myself because I truly love my educational experience and growing and developing professionally. Starting bachelor’s classes has been a great transition into professional nursing.
Working as a CNA helped me to grow and develop while I was also a nursing student. Being a C/NA was a great way to learn what it’s like to have patient care as well as what it’s like to have more than 1 patient at a time. It is very physically challenging working as an aide and it involved a lot more physical, but it was great to develop patient care skills, and I enjoy thoroughly working with all of my aide’s. I’m a huge team player and I ultimately am looking forward to greatly improving as I develop as a professional nurse.
As a registered nurse, I have been on my own since April 2017. I have since been charge nurse overnight. I have floated to the ICU as well as Behavioral Health – Eating Disorder Unit. I have enjoyed my experiences growing and developing as a professional nurse as well as working as a member of a team. I have been challenged working nights and especially working as charge but I ultimately enjoyed my challenges as they help me develop.
I plan to attend college to further develop and get my masters degree as well as my doctorate in Nursing. I plan to obtain the practitioner track and become an APRN overtime. It takes time and goals to attain these achievements but I look forward to challenges developing professionally. I look forward to education and have a thirst for knowledge.
I will obtain a medical surgical certification once I have been employed for over a year I qualify for that. I will also be continuing education to develop professionally as a wound nurse. I currently am in charge of obtaining an IV site for my patients. We do IV’s on my unit and I enjoy the skill and actually do very well with my IV’s thankfully. This can take time to develop but as many skills also gets easier over time. Currently I have a BLS certification, but I plan to attain ACLS certification as well to provide more critical care for patients. And so I can eventually become a resource nurse, and/or float over to the Intensive Care Unit. We also obtain behavioral health certification to provide patient care for patient’s on the behavioral health units.
