4. This weekend saw the NDCXL brave the
elements at Derby near Leicestershire, courtesy
of organisers SRAM. This was round 6 & 7 of the
league races.
Although somewhat flat, the course became
progressively tougher as the rain continued
throughout the day, adding to the muddy
conditions experienced by the racers. League
leader Jonathan Harper (Mansfield Road Club)
took an early lead in the Senior Men’s race, one
which he held to the end, despite second place
Lee Shunburne (Fossa) chasing hard throughout
the race. Shunburne’s Fossa team mate Andrew
Naylor took third.
“It was a tough race in the heavy wind and
rain which always seems the case at the Darley
circuit – but one I really enjoyed,” said Harper.
“They were definitely classic cross conditions.
My aim was to get out in front early on and just
hold a strong pace and take my own lines on
the course. “I’m aiming to win the league again
overall and, at present, I am in a strong place to
do so but even at this stage things can change.”

This corner got the better of some! Straight back up racing within seconds!
GO ON THE GIRLS
Olympian Annie Last took the win in the
Women’s race in decisive fashion, putting over
a minute into her rivals after just the first
lap. Kate George (Empella) took second, with
Nutcracker’s Sarah Lomas in third. First Vet
woman was Empella’s Tracey Fletcher.
The Girls U16 race was won by Derby Mercury’s
Alice Warbrick, with Beth Stevens and Heanor
Clarion’s Fran Chatto rounding out the top three.
Derby although being the clear winner did not
give up a single breath and pushed all the way
to the end of course which was met with a
strong celebration from the crowd, she is seen
here on the right coming near to the end of her
final lap.
The Veteran Men’s race was, judging by the
crowd reaction the most exciting race of the
day, it saw Fossa’s Matt Crouch battling it out
with Peak Road Club’s Dan Cook and NFTO Race
Club’s George Richardson.
For the final ten minutes of the race these three
were rubbing tyres and taking dangerous lines
around corner in order to get the win! Crouch’s
consistent pace saw him take the eventual win,
with Cook taking second, 18 seconds ahead of
Richardson.

6. Round 8 of the SRAM
NDCXL was held this
weekend at Markeaton
Park, Derby, courtesy
of organisers Derby
Mercury RC. This was
the League’s second
visit to the park of the
season, but a radically
revised course and a
healthy dose of mud
meant that riders
enjoyed a wholly
different experience to
the earlier race of the
season.
In the Senior Men’s
race Clee Cycles’
Arthur Green led the
field for the first part
of the opening lap,
with Pines Cycles’
Dave Fletcher hot on
his heels. The pair
stayed together until
lap 3, when Fletcher
took the lead that he
would keep to the
finish, a minute and a
half ahead of Green.
The battle for third
place proved to be
the main excitement
of the race, with
Fossa team-mates
Lee Shunburne and
Andrew Naylor locked
together over multiple
laps. Shunburne
eventually took
third place, his best
performance of the
season to date.
Hargrove’s Cycles
Harry Yates was first
Junior.
The Women’s race
saw another victory
from Bolsover’s Maddi
Smith, finishing a
clear 2 minutes ahead
of Mid Shropshire
Wheelers’ Charlotte
Broughton in second
and Empella’s Tracey
Fletcher in third.
In the V40 race,

to take the win a

chamois cream is a must and Chapeau! must

Bottle cages largely come down to a

12. Specialized’s Crux is a simply brilliant cyclo-cross bike that provides really good handling, bags of pace

What the Crux isn’t is a versatile do-everything
cyclo-cross bike. It’s a race-focused bike. With the
gravel/adventure category coming along in the last
two years, Specialized has developed the Diverge,
a bike intended to appeal to that cyclist seeking
the big tyres and capability of a cyclo-crosser, but
wrapped in a more suitable package, with plenty of
rack, mudguard and water bottle mounts.
That leaves the Crux with a clearer purpose of
intention. While mudguard and rack mounts are
shunned, it retains two bottle cage mounts. It’s
ready to race, out of the box, but there’s nothing to
stop you sticking two bottles on and riding it all
day on a variety of roads and paths.
But it’s most likely anyone buying the Crux is going
to be looking at racing it.
Part of the draw of the Specialized is its all-carbon
fork, which sports post mount disc brake tabs –
still a rarity on ‘cross bikes, but likely to become
the norm when all this shakes out. The mounts
are spaced for a 140mm rotor; we didn’t want for
more power but 160mm discs can be used with
an adaptor. The fork weighs 1.17lb/534g (uncut).

14. SHIMANO SLX BRAKES
Control is excellent, and modulation and fine feedback is as good as any other
brake here – at least once you're used to the changing leverage of the Servo
Wave cam. The power assist from the cam makes merely decent dyno
readings feel plenty powerful on the trail. The few extra millimeters of pad
retraction the cam brings also mean cleaner, quieter running in dirty
conditions, and bedding in is rapid.
DEDA ZERO1 STEM
Other than that difference, the Zero1 is virtually the same as its lighter
counterpart in angles and lengths. It also benefits from the same 3D
forging, which creates an aligned grain structure for stiffer, more
reliable material. Not that 6061 alloy really needs any extra help,
but you'll appreciate the promise of extra dependability on fast
descents or rough roads.
AXIS 4.0 DISC WHEELS
The AXIS 4.0 SCS Disc wheelset is performance packed, with the
patented SCS hub system for a proper chainline on short chain-
stay performance road and cyclocross bikes. The tubeless-ready
(with tape and sealant) rim has an internal rim width of 21mm,
providing a better tire profile for enhanced traction. This wheelset
is built with 12mm thru-axle hubs for use on thru-axle bikes.
SHIMANO XT M780
XT SPD's are designed to take the rigors of off-road competition
whilst also being perfect for cross country trail riding. Featuring an
increased surface contact area for incredible pedaling stability. A,
slimmer pedal axle housing sheds mud better than prior designs for
the best possible performance in muddy conditions. Beautifully
constructed with a strong and slender spindle.
SHIMANO FC-3550 SORA
The Shimano FC-3550 Sora 9-Speed Compact Chainset is designed
for easier installation, adjustment and maintenance. The 2-piece
design allows the bottom bracket bearings to be spaced wider apart
(outboard the frame) enabling the use of larger bearings and an
increased axle diameter. The double-ring 9-speed chainset is excellent
value, featuring strategically placed chain pick-up pinsing.

The CNP Hydro Gel is a

nice taste, it is easy on

competitors which is
important. Out only real
concern was the seriously
high price.

the world’s first isotonic
gel effectively delivering an
easily digestible and quick
supply of carbohydrate for
energy during exercise.
SiS GO Gels are designed
to be consumed without
water meaning that you can
ensure rapid delivery.
WIGGLE
£0.50
Wiggle gel are distinctive in
taste but not over powering.
Perhaps more importantly
they are easy to digest,
falling in-between those
options that are too watery
and the other extreme that
are almost chewy. Wiggle
hits the mark from a flavour
point of view and then some.
HIGH 5
£1.00
The texture of these Energy
Gels is light and thin, more
like a juice than a gel, and
noticeably different from
some of the thicker gels
available. This is good
because the High5 gel is
very easy to swallow, but
can be a nuisance when you
open a sachet.
BEST

BUY
There are tonnes of different gels on the market which is making it harder for us cyclists to work out
which ones benefit us the most, as well as I feel more importantly which ones taste the best! There is
nothing worse than reaching the brow of a hill, cracking open an energy gel to then instantly regret it.
TORQ
£1.55
It has a smooth and
palatable consistency. For
those who don’t like gels,
this one might change
their mind – it’s like eating
dessert on the trail. If you’re
still not sure, buy a mixed
pack and try them on your
next ride, you might just be
surprised!
MULE BAR
£1.25
All of the ingredients in
these gels are natural, and
the Soil Association logo on
the packet indicates that
most are organic. So if you
find the compositions of
some other gels give you
stomach ache, then these
Kicks would be well worth
a try.
ZIPVIT
£1.49
The texture of the gel is on
the ‘thick’ side compared to
competitor products. This
means there’s no danger of
liquid spilling when you bite
off the top of the sachet
on the move, but it does
take a few seconds longer
to swallow and slightly less
stomachable.
NECTAR
£1.50
The taste is light and
not sticky, but with a bit
of zing which makes it
pleasant on the taste-buds.
Compared to other gels, the
consistency is very ‘thin’
– more like a drink than a
gel - which is not surprising,
given that about half the
content is water.

18. WHAT’S ON?
Located in Surrey, known for its famous hills and exceptional riding,
both on and off the road. These are very overlooked in the cycling
world. We feel this is because it is located in a small village called
Kingswood which has a very low and fairly elderly population.
Don’t let this sway your opinion though. Our team went down to
check out what it was all about!
On arrival the access point was quite difficult but we had a local
rider with us who showed us the main areas of entry and once they
were pointed out it was fairly obvious were they were going to be.
The scenary is absolutely beautiful in the woodland as well as when
you hit some of the gravel paths directing you through country lanes
between different areas of the woods.
WAS IT WORTH IT?
We as a team agreed that it is defintely worth a day out in this
woodland, it has acres and acres of riding so you could do a solid
day of riding without pinning the same section twice.
This is accompanied by their being a small village high street with
a lovely coffee house with outdoor seating, perfect for any muddy
cycler looking for a sandwich or a cup of coffee.
There was a variety of cycling which we hadn’t experienced before,
each trail was slightly different so you were always kept on your
toes which was exciting!
The only downside that we did come across, but is very similar to all
places to ride which aren’t specifc trail centres was you would come
across the odd tractor whilst jumping between tracks that did cause
us issues but nothing major. So on your next weekend give the trail
centre a miss and get yourself down to Kingswood.
LOCATION

Access is easy via the train as the station is location about a
five minute cycle from the main entrance at the bottom side

It is fairly difficult to find the access points as they are not
obvious, but following the blue points will make it easier.
There are signposts once you are within the woodland which

20. Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Khaled Hosseni and Kim Edwards together share the perception of secrets and the redemptive power of love. Using the element of character both novels is able to
expose the burden of keeping secrets. Secrets affect us by how we share them and how we keep them from others, affecting our character, honesty and relationships. Firstly, trust and communication
are essential in many relationships. Without these two aspects, the relationship would not be one you want to continue. In Khaled Hosseni’s The Kite Runner showed how these aspects were
destroyed in a relationship. Amir, the son of a well-off and recognized man, developed a friendship with one of his servants; Hassan. As the years moved on, Amir is faced with a life altering choice,
he was able to save Hassan but the way he acted effected their lives which led them to pursue two separate lives. “I opened my mouth, almost said something. Almost. The rest of my life might have
turned out differently if I had. But I did not. I just watched paralyzed” (Hosseni73) Amir now matured looking into his past, was saddened with the choices that he made as a young boy that in the
end changed his friendship with Hassan. This was also a major changing point in Kim Edwards, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. David Henry was faced with a life changing decision that would alter
his relationship with his wife forever. “He had done the wrong thing all those years ago; he had made a mistake when he handed this daughter to CaroliGill.” (Edwards198) His decision was based
utterly out of protecting the heart of the woman he loved most in his life, but in doing so he was in reality tarnishing it even more. By keeping this secret stuck between them, their relationship was
slowly falling apart. Therefore, both of these works illustrated how trust and communication is vital in many relationships. When many people hear the word ‘secret’ they may have a grin or a
worried expression on their face. A secret is the hiding of truths or false information. Sometimes in life, we face problems and accomplishments. Secrets are the mysteries of life they make or break
us. There are several reasons for this; it does not matter whether you are keeping or have told it. In The Kite Runner and The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Khaled Hosseni and Kim Edwards

face problems and accomplishments. Secrets are the mysteries of life they make or break us. There are several reasons for this; it does not matter whether you are keeping or have told it. In The Kite
Runner and The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Khaled Hosseni and Kim Edwards together share the perception of secrets and the redemptive power of love. Using the element of character both
novels is able to expose the burden of keeping secrets. Secrets affect us by how we share them and how we keep them from others, affecting our character, honesty and relationships. Firstly, trust and
communication are essential in many relationships. Without these two aspects, the relationship would not be one you want to continue. In Khaled Hosseni’s The Kite Runner showed how these
aspects were destroyed in a relationship. Amir, the son of a well-off and recognized man, developed a friendship with one of his servants; Hassan. As the years moved on, Amir is faced with a life
altering choice, he was able to save Hassan but the way he acted effected their lives which led them to pursue two separate lives. “I opened my mouth, almost said something. Almost. The rest of my
ife might have turned out differently if I had. But I did not. I just watched paralyzed” (Hosseni73) Amir now matured looking into his past, was saddened with the choices that he made as a young
boy that in the end changed his friendship with Hassan. This was also a major changing point in Kim Edwards, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. David Henry was faced with a life changing decision
that would alter his relationship with his wife forever. “He had done the wrong thing all those years ago; he had made a mistake when he handed this daughter to Caroline Gill.”(Edwards198) His
decision was based utterly out of protecting the heart of the woman he loved most in his life, but in doing so he was in reality tarnishing it even more. By keeping this secret stuck between them, their
relationship was slowly falling apart. Therefore, both of these works illustrated how trust and communication is vital in many relationships. When many people hear the word ‘secret’ they may have a

TAKE YOUR PICK!
Riding the trails for a day showed us just the
kind of variety you can take in whilst riding in
the Kingswood woods. When first entering you
are placed onto a wide double breasted track,
flat yet technical at times with
protruding roots and thick muddy sections.
During the Summer of course it would be a
completely different story.
As you continue on you can either cut up one
of the trails to get your leg muscles pumping
and you will find youself at crossroads be-
tween tracks. This is the beauty of Kingswood.
All the trails link into one another so you never
get lost as well as you can plan a route before
you enter the woods. We rode the seven
indivudal tracks back to back, riding up one
trail, the decending the one adjesent to it and
so on. This gives you an awesome pump and
really gets the blood pumping!
If you want to bypass these trails for a more
casual ride, which we also did with one of our
partly injured team members. It provides miles
of beautiful coutryside riding merging from
soft grassland into gravel and so on.
These photos don’t even begin to give justice
to the sheer beauty that is the Kingswood
Woods. On the right hand page shows a
section of our favourite trail of the day, it
clearly hadn’t been ridden in a few days and
was completely covered in leaves the whole
way down which provided us with a drift track!
This had us all slipping and sliding down the
run inevitably causing a few tumbles!
TOO MANY TRAILS?
This was another trail (photo on the right)
which we particularly enjoyed, this was
because we were trying to make the most of
the mud! Some people get in a strop when
they start to see the mud thickening over the
winter but we embrace it!
There is nothing more enjoyable than sliding
your back wheel out round a corner. This trail
here provided us with exactly what we wanted,
it was fairly non stop thick mud, don’t get me
wrong, I wouldn’t want a full day of this, but
when you find the odd trail with this it is good
fun! The only real way to be able to relate to
what I am saying is by going there yourself, it
is an absolute blast and was one of the best
days riding weve had this season.

22. This month we tested the basic
model of the Specialized CRUX. A
perfect bike for anyone not
looking to blow up their wallets!
Make no mistake, this frame is designed and built with
racing in mind.
The frame geometry, short along the top tube — ensures
agile handling and responsive feedback through the front
end. Cyclocross bikes can make excellent all-rounders, and
this is true of the Crux, to a certain extent. With slick
rubber fitted, it easily handles road rides, but unlike
other bikes, there are no mudguard eyelets or pannier rack
mounts.
The Specialized Crux 2015 is made for racing, and didn’t
disappoint was built for racing, and that’s where it
performs best. The ‘FACT’ carbon frame is a one-piece
design that, according to Specialized, optimises weight
and stiffness. And the frame is certainly stiff. Riding
other bikes with only 25psi in the tyres, it can be hard
to feel frame-stiffness, but on the Crux you certainly
can. It’s not a harsh ride, though, which shows the
frame’s aptitude for all-terrain use.
Disc brakes are becoming more common on cross bikes. These
TRP HY/RD calipers are cable-operated but with a hydraulic
chamber built into the caliper for the final action of
moving the pads. The benefits: hydraulic efficiency and
modulation, but with the ease of maintenance associated
with cable-operation.
In practice, the modulation was a tad better than the
ubiquitous Avid BB7 brakes supplied on most disc brake
road bikes, but not by a huge margin. They weren’t
particularly intuitive to adjust pre-race, either; doing
so first required a quick internet search to find a ‘how to’
guide.
The biggest benefit of the brakes is that they are
compatible with all levers, meaning they’re ripe for post-
purchase upgrade. That said, it’s a shame Specialized
didn’t supply Shimano’s own hydraulic braking system to
complete the complement of Shimano 105 components.
RUGID
TYRES
Axis 2.0 wheels are
supplied with this
model and the Sport
E5. They are fairly
non-descript, but
offered a solid ride
during testing. The
overall sprightliness
of the ride was
greatly improved once
we fitted a set of
Stan’s NoTubes Iron
Cross wheels, thanks
mostly to the 300g
weight saving.
The Specialized Crux
Elite 2015 is made
for racing and it
doesn’t disappoint.
The stiff frame give
agile and responsive
handling, and the
price tag makes it a
good choice. We feel
that is the perfect
bike for someone who
has a good level of
bike skills but is
wishing to try out
something new!

USEFUL
27. This is our hidden brand
of the month. We do
this to try and bring to
light a company which
deserves it but we feel
is under appreciated on
the market. This month
we have chosen Caffeine,
a custom wheel building
company hand built in
the UK.
We caught up with the
founder Ollie Boulton
to get some more
information about
the company itself.
One of the thing’s we
appreciated about the
company the most was
that they did not 100%
push their own brand
on you. “If you want
a certain set of hubs,
Chris King is a common
request, we will happily
fit them around our
carbon design”. Great to
see a company which are
not all about the profit!
The company was
founded in 2014 and
is one of the only
custom building wheel
companies in the UK.
“I felt there was a gap
in the market for a
passionate rider who
also had skills in the bike
trade. So I thought why
not?”.
We love that enthusiasm
in the industry and it
makes such a difference
when it comes to custom
built parts as they will
have been made with
care and attention to
detail.
Ollie has had years of
experience working in
the biking industry and
grew up in a world of
biking, riding everything
from BMX to Downhill
and over the last five
years has become more
involved and competed
in the Cyclocross world.
“I had been struggling
to find the right wheels
for my bike as I wanted
to have carbon rims
and some bold colours
involved too but no-one
seemed to be offering
this at a reasonable
price.”. We couldn’t
agree more with Ollie
here with a new set of
ENVE wheels setting
you back a small fortune
and competing with the
prices of some high spec
bikes on the market!
“I took my Cyclocross
bike out to Morzine in
the summer and people
looked at me as if I was
mad, but it worked! Rode
down the easier trails
then hit the road for a
quick journey back to
the apartment.” I am all
for pushing it to the limit
but a CX bike in the Alps,
crazy!
Whilst riding in the Alps
and also on the UK circuit
the wheels have been
pushed to the test and
have been ridden in
competitions in Belgium
and France.
One of our favourite
things about the wheel’s
that have currently been
manufactured as they
are currently on limited
supply was that you
could choose the level
of graphics upon them,
varying from just a single
valve logo, or large
CAFFEINE decals around
the wheels.
To top it off he released
a few tee shirt designs
shown below which we
think are awesome. They
are in limited supply and
have only been featured
in this magazine, not
even online! If you want
one give Ollie an email
on OB@caffeine.co.uk
and he might be able to
hook you up!
Overall we feel this
company will only
expand from here and
we hope to see it blow
up in the near future. But
as Ollie say’s “I will only
ever sell off my own back,
so I know exactly where
and what has happened
to the wheels”.
