Abstract: There are many Open Source tools which help in creating and updating single Kubernetes clusters. Corporations usually require many clusters, depending on their size they may require hundreds or even thousands of clusters. However, the more clusters you need the harder it becomes to operate, monitor, manage, and keep all of them alive and up-to-date.
That is exactly what open source project “Gardener” focuses on. It is not just another provisioning tool, but it is rather designed to manage Kubernetes clusters as a service. It provides Kubernetes-conformant clusters on various cloud providers and the ability to maintain hundreds or thousands of them at scale. At SAP, we face this heterogeneous multi-cloud & on-premise challenge not only in our own platform, but also encounter the same demand at all our larger and smaller customers implementing Kubernetes & Cloud Native.
Inspired by the possibilities of Kubernetes and the ability to self-host, the foundation of Gardener is Kubernetes itself. While self-hosting, as in, to run Kubernetes components inside Kubernetes is a popular topic in the community, we apply a special pattern catering to the needs of operating a huge number of clusters with minimal total cost of ownership.
In this session Dirk will provide a comprehensive overview of Gardener, the underlying concepts, and talk about interesting implementation details. In addition there will be a hands-on sessions where attendants will be given free access to a Gardener instance and given the opportunity to dynamically create Kubernetes cluster and test them.

Since announcing Openshift version 4, deploying a single OpenShift cluster has become pretty simple. However, simple does not mean scalable, especially when you need to deploy tens, hundreds or even thousands of clusters. For example, a cellular company deploying OpenShift on Edge at the base of each of their cell towers. It would be very difficult to try and manage this using the default deployment tool.
Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP), along with GitOps methodologies, can be leveraged to automate OpenShift deployment in parallel to multiple sites, without human intervention.
ZTP is a component of Open Cluster Management (OCM), an operator that enables a single OCP cluster to manage a fleet of clusters. This functionality uses declarative APIs to enable the configuration of a vast number of OpenShift clusters. ZTP integrates multiple open-source projects: OCM, Hive, Assisted Installer and Metal³.
In this session, you will learn about ZTP architecture and its components. We will discuss the installation flow and how the components interact with each other. Gardener project allows companies to run fully-managed Kubernetes clusters at scale on any infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP, Alicloud, Packet Cloud, vSphere, bare metal) - both cloud and on-prem. It offers consistent and coherent experience with full brand of supported kubernetes versions.
Kubernetes: one cluster or many
When we think about establishing a Kubernetes capability for our organization, our instinct, or perhaps just habit, might lead us to stand up a single cluster that will then be a shared resource across numerous tenants. Kubernetes offers namespaces that are intended to carve up the capacity across different users or groups of users. And while this may work well in some scenarios, it does impose certain constraints and limitations on its use. For example, it is well understood that the multitenancy in Kubernetes is soft, meaning it does not guard against deliberately malicious attacks from one tenant to another.
If instead, we align tenant boundaries to Kubernetes clusters, effectively creating many single tenant clusters we can not only avoid certain limitations but we gain some significant advantages. Add a control plane for managing these sets of clusters and we have a powerful solution built on decades of maturity in machine virtualization.
In this session we will present both models, multi-tenant clusters and multi-clusters and study the tradeoffs of each.

Scaling up development of a modular code base
Microservices are quickly becoming one of the preferred deployment models in the software industry. Much has been said about the runtime impact of microservices, but less about how they impact the development process.

Kubernetes Multi-cluster without Federation - Kubecon EU 2018
Federation is typically thought of as the only way to do multi-cluster operations, but that's not the case. I explore more secure and scalable methods for connecting clusters together. This is key to hybrid scenarios where you want two or more clusters set up in a consistent way, and then deploy an application in all regions or on all clouds.
I will dive deep into sharing RBAC roles and resource limits, plus setting up the same namespaces with important default config like Pod Security Policies.
Anatomy of Open edX at DjangoCon 2018 (San Diego)
What does it take to build a web application that can serve millions of concurrent users? This talk will dissect Open edX, the open source online learning platform that powers edX.org and hundreds of other sites around the world.
Open edX is written in Django but relies on a slew of other software to work at scale. We’ll break down the components of the entire software architecture, and explain how each component is used. This will give attendees some insights into how they might architect their web application if they’re building software to serve a large audience.
We’ll discuss how Open edX utilizes both MySQL and MongoDB as data stores and why it uses MySQL for student data and MongoDB for course data. We’ll describe the queing architecture of Celery and RabbitMQ to process background jobs, and Hadoop for processing terabytes of learner analytics data.
DevOps enthusiasts will not be disappointed as we’ll go into the use of Ansible and Terraform for deploying the entire suite of software in a consistent and repeatable way up to popular cloud providers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.

This will give attendees some insights into how they might architect their web application if they’re building software to serve a large audience.
We’ll discuss how Open edX utilizes both MySQL and MongoDB as data stores and why it uses MySQL for student data and MongoDB for course data. We’ll describe the queing architecture of Celery and RabbitMQ to process background jobs, and Hadoop for processing terabytes of learner analytics data.
DevOps enthusiasts will not be disappointed as we’ll go into the use of Ansible and Terraform for deploying the entire suite of software in a consistent and repeatable way up to popular cloud providers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.
What will attendees learn? The attendees will get a close look at a modern Django-based web application to see how it’s architected, and come away with a better understanding of design decisions when building a web application that needs to serve 35M users from every country in the world. Attendees will also be equipped with the knowledge to run Open edX on their laptop or in the cloud, if they want to explore the software further.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
